Ron Meeks hired as Panthers' Defensive Coordinator
The Panthers finally decided on a defensive coordinator and it is Ron Meeks.

That's the good news.
The bad news is that when he resigned from the Colts I was reading the comments at profootballtalk.com (http://www.profootballtalk.com/2009/01/20/meeks-resigns-from-the-colts/) and many of the complaints sounded a lot like the Panthers fan complaints about Mike Trgovac. I personally think this is a good hire for the Panthers, if not a predictable one, simply because John Fox seems to favor experience coordinators. Meeks ran Dungy's Tampa 2 defense in Indy, and Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis ran up some good numbers in his defense. Of course, this will be Fox's defense, so I am interested to see how they mesh together. It makes me nervous to see the Indy fans that posted about Meeks, just because it seems like those that made comments seemed happy to see him go.
What does everyone think about this hire? Good move or do you think it doesn't really matter with John Fox as the head coach, the defense is still going to look very similar to what was seen under Trgo?

From a Colts fan perspective of Meeks
The guy wasn’t terrible, but he did seem to be very vanilla in his schemes. Perhaps thats because its a cover 2 and the whole premise of it is to just line up and execute, but his play calling was just a lot of stunts and twists along the defensive line and soft zones. Im guessing his schemes are going to change because of the personal in Carolina,
I have no problem with vanilla
as long as it works. The Panthers have been using soft zones for what seems like centuries now. I did not feel good to hear that about him. I will give him a chance but I at least hope he gets more out of the personnel than Trgo seemed to. Of course, how much of that was John Fox’s design remains to be seen I guess.

Agreed with the above.
This guy is lightyears ahead of Trago. We have a highly talented defense. He should be able to bring it out.

The more I hear
about this hiring, the more excited I get. I just hope this can be a step up from Trgo and not more of the same. That is all that I am worried about. Other than that, we have better personnel than Indy did and even though the D did have trouble stopping the run (that seems to be the major complaint), I think we should be a better team with him as D coordinator. I hope.

Dude, Meeks sucked
The Colts D was that won the super bowl was good, because of Tony Dungy, Alan Williams (DB coach), and, John Tearnlink (DL coach). Nobody on the team cared when Ron Meeks was fired. Hell Mike Murphy (LB coach) did more for the Colts D then this clown.
So not to be mean or anything, but you may want to cat scratch the Panters out of the playoffs next season. Because of Ron Meeks.
Go Colts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You sound like a jilted lover, really
We shall see who has the better D next year!

Well no offense to you or your team at all,
But it kind of makes sense that Ron Meeks turns out to be a bad DC in Carolina, because it seems that the Panthers never can go to the playoffs two years strait.
But hey, if he’s good more power to him and his new team. But if Meeks turns out to be a bad DC, don’t say I didn’t warn you.
Go Colts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No offense to you
but it doesn’t make sense to say Meeks will be a bad defensive coordinator because the Panthers can’t go to the playoffs two years straight. There are other mitigating circumstances that cause a team to not make the playoffs, and it doesn’t always mean that Meeks is a bad DC. Not to mention Meeks has nothing to do with the Panthers struggles in making the playoffs two years in a row since he was in Indy. This comment may make sense if Meeks had been on the staff when the Panthers did not make back to back playoffs.
I don’t think Meeks is going to make much of a difference though.

To bad Meeks
couldn’t help Payton be more than an annual one and done wonder in the playoffs most of the time.
Thanks for the post Ben
I appreciate the contribution

I love contributing when there is something to add. I love a good discussion as well.

Cannot Be Worse
Hey Trugo was awful with his Cover 2 and the soft zone coverage, for what I have seen of the Colts their pass defense always one the best every year and it is done with building through the draft and taking changes on guys that some say are undersized or not good enough at the time. Go Meeks build your staff and get us back to the dominant defense unit we had a few years ago.
