A Very Scientific View at Julius Peppers Trade Situation
In the most scientific why I could think of, I visited 10 SB Nation sites and submitted a FanPost asking "What would you trade for Julius Peppers?" And since we all know team owners and coaches do everything their fans want I figured this would be very accurate.Okay, so maybe not, but I at least figured it would be fun.
The teams I polled were the 49ers, Broncos, Bucs, Chargers, Jets, Ravens, Steelers, Texans, Packers, Browns, and Patriots. They all had the same options expect the last three teams, which I'll explain in a minute.
Here was my basic question, although it varied a little from team to team depending on their situation:
By now everyone knows that Julius Peppers clearly wants to find another team for next season. Those of us at Cat Scratch Reader would like to get a feel for what other teams fans would trade for Peppers, if at all. He says he is interested in a 3-4 defense but many of us believe that is mostly a smoke screen and he just wants to find another place to play. But I don't really want to get into why he wants to leave. So, answer me this question, provided we franchise him, what would you be willing to trade for Peppers?(I'd prefer you select something besides "other", but if you feel so inclined please leave a comment as to what you would give.)
Here where the basic options I gave them.
- Entitled two 1st round draft picks
- 1st and 2nd round
- 1st, 3rd, and 4th round
- Nothing higher than 2nd round
- Nothing higher than 3rd round
- Nothing, don't need him
- Nothing, cost to much
- Other (Please Specify)
The Packers had one additional option:
- Aaron Rogers + maybe a late round pick.
The Browns had two additional options:
- Derek Anderson, 1st, and 3rd or higher
- Derek Anderson, 2nd, and 3rd or higher
And the Patriots had three more options:
- Matt Cassell straight up
- Matt Cassell + late round draft pick
- Matt Cassell & one of the Panthers late round picks

The first thing I notice is that most fans don't believe Peppers is worth any type of 1st round draft pick. Whether they view Peppers as undeserving or just value their picks to much I don't know. Yet nearly 40% would give at least a second round plus more.
Regarding the three teams with the extra questions, I'm not surprised at all that Aaron Rodgers wouldn't be on the trading block. However, while I wouldn't mind seeing Derek Anderson joining the team in theory, I would rather have a 1st round pick as our defensive line needs that much help. I also find it interesting, while a small sample size, that the Patriot fans value Matt Cassell on par or even higher than Peppers. Not sure I would agree, but its interesting.
There where several common themes from all the teams however. Many express doubts that Peppers would be a good fit in a 3-4 defense, some express concern with his age, and as I mentioned above most would rather keep their draft picks.
Of course with the news that Trgo was hired in GB and they will be switching to a 3-4, speculation has begun that they may trade to bring Peppers along. On the other hand if Trgo was the issue for Peppers, would he now stay? That I doubt. I believe he's seen his last days in a Panthers uniform.
This is definately interesting to speculate on. Chances are if we trade him away it will not be to any of these teams.

Very good post!
I think the reason that no 1st rounders have been offered is because most fans do value their draft picks. I’ve found that most fans from their team overvalue the value of their own players while undermining the value of players from other teams. One of the reasons we’re not in charge I guess.
Julius Peppers should bring a 1st rounder on a team somewhere. I still believe that. Jared Allen will be used as a value measure for DE’s, and someone out there will pick him up.

Please, please
No Cassel.
And if we could get Derek Anderson & at least a first, I’d jump on it in half a second.
I would too
And as surprisingly as it seems, I think most Brown’s fans would too.

A big "No Deal!" to that. I don't think it would happen.
The fans might like it, but after Anderson’s hot steak he’s been a mediocre QB at best. Either Brady Quinn or Derek Anderson has to step up and be the leader of that team before either one is traded away. The Browns wouldn’t risk it.
And trading a 1st along with one of them? Believe me, I’d take it if it was offered. I’d take it in a second. I just don’t think that the Browns will offer it. The value of the player along with a 1st round pick seems too high for Julius Peppers to reach it, even as godly as he may be.
As for myself, I want to see Anderson or Quinn to succeed so we can sneak away with the other. I believe they both can start in the NFL, but neither one of them is rising so that the value of the other falls.

Anderson was on fire 2 years ago
and then last year… the OL imploded. Braylon Edwards forgot how to catch the ball. The running game disappeared. Kellen Winslow was constantly hurt. None of that will help the QB.
I don’t think the team will keep Brady Quinn on the bench much longer… hell, with a new regime coming in, they might even want a different QB.
That said, after last year (and considering every year up until his breakout), Anderson’s value is probably fairly low. I think he could work it out here, with a stronger OL, a very strong running game, and some reliable WRs (Smith & Moose… hopefully more to come).
Well, you're right about that.
The offensive line did implode. He didn’t get much help. To be honest though, I don’t think that in 2007 the situation was much better. His receivers were better, but the offensive line was still not up to the task of guarding Anderson, which is a shame because they began to year with so many starters that Anderson was supposed to be able to take a nap in the pocket.
I’d still like to see one of the QB’s take over the team. A backup always has lower value, and I’d love to spirit away one of these QB’s with a 2nd or 3rd round draft pick.
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
i disagree
After last season, I’m not sure I want Anderson. I don’t want to trade Peppers for a back-up QB. Jake stunk it up in the playoff game, but Anderson got benched for Brady Quinn. He was stinking it up before then, and then when he got hurt the last time ( a season ending injury that he may still be rehabbing), the fans cheered the injury (we know some fans out there have no class, but that’s not the point.) The only QB I’d take is Cassel, as he is the only back-up QB out there worthy of Peppers. No team is going to give up their starter for Peppers, and I think we’re better off with a 1st and 3rd, than another QB to back-up Jake. There are only a few QBs who I believe will definitely be better than Jake, and the only ones who are available are Matt Hasselbeck and Cassel.
I say we quit talking trade with Peppers. He’s not in charge. He’s not the alpha-dog, Fox is, and he needs to prove it. Franchise Peppers and call it a day. If we franchise him, then there is a minimum teams have to offer to get him, and if they don’t, then we keep him. Then if Peppers wants to get offered as much money next offseason as he could get right now as a free agent, then he needs to get 15 more sacks next season, 5 more forced fumbles and a couple blocked kicks. If he wants to be the highest paid defensive player in the league, he should try showing up during the playoffs.
Nah, I don't think it would happen
Julius Peppers could pull a defensive version of a Randy Moss in Oakland while saying he’s unhappy. If he played his cards right, his value in 10 would only be slightly lower than 09. If we could talk Julius Peppers into staying, I say by all means we should keep him. But if we can trade him, do it. But if we franchise and keep him like you say, we risk losing talented players by keeping a player that only plays 20-30%
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
Cassel
is one of the back-ups that I wouldn’t touch with a 10-foot pole. Yes, he can put up huge numbers on a team with Randy Moss, Wes Welker and a wide-open passing game (especially with no real running game threatening his touches). Anyone could.
As for Anderson, as I mentioned above… he wasn’t exactly playing with a solid core or something.
And Peppers… as it is, he takes like every other play off. If you frustrate him by franchising and not doing else… will he even show up as much as he does right now? I think you have to franchise him & trade him… and hope that the scouts come through with the draft picks. And if we can get Derek Anderson along with the picks, even better. If it’s Cassel though, I’d turn and run. No thanks. I’d rather take a shot with Josh Freeman in the 2nd round.
No team is going to give up their starter for Peppers? I don’t think the Lions & teams like that (maybe the Chiefs too) would think very long before agreeing… not that I want them, but just saying.
revshawn
By franchising Peppers, we keep on the team for next year, and if another team wants him, they have to offer something in the neighborhood of what the Chiefs got for Jared Allen last year, which, I think, was a 1st and 2 3rd rd picks, or something like that. If we got only draft picks and no players for Peppers, then we’d also have enough money to sign a big FA like Asumogha or Suggs. I think that either way you look at it, teams will be offering a lot. Two teams I expect to make an offer are the Redskins, once they cut Jason Taylor, and the Chiefs, who haven’t made up for losing Allen. Either way, I fully expect that Peppers will be in another uniform next season, and if we have to play against him, I’ll enjoy watching D-Will shake him out of his cleats.
Are any big time receivers going to be FAs? I don’t think anyone can come in and have the success as a #2 like Moose because Moose is a teacher and great blocker, and also had a decent season receiving. YOunger, faster guys might not be able to do everything that is asked of them in our offense, but if there are some elite players, we should get one.
The biggest one by far would be.
TJ Houshmenzada, or however you spell his name. He’s going to be a free agent and he probably won’t resign with the Bengals.
Probably out of reach for the Panthers though, even though it would give Jake the best 2 WR in the NFL.
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
TJ Houshmandzadeh
I believe Is a free agent this offseason, but I don’t think the Panthers will target him anyway. If the Panthers add any big name, it should start with either defensive tackle Haynesworth or cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha.
by ChipperTeixeira89 on Jan 25, 2009 3:00 AM EST up reply actions
I think they'll try to make a run at Haynesworth if anyone.
Asomugha will command too much of a contract, and we’ll have two quality corners to start the season. They’ve just been suffering from the Tragovich plague. I expect for them to bounce back, especially Gamble.
Haynesworth will command a double team, and he can help plug up the run in the middle. If we get Haynesworth and trade Peppers for a 1st round draft pick, I think our D-Line will be in good shape to absorb the blow that Peppers absense leaves us.
"Once again the trowsers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
FAs
Good point, Revshawn, we saw a few years ago that we don’t pay too much for receivers when we let Moose go to Chicago. Haynesworth is the guy I think we need most for his run defense. Better run defense gets us off the field on 3rd down. It also helps if we don’t have six DBs on the field to cover 3 WRs like we did against the Giants. Glad Trgo is gone.
Maybe we could trade Peppers for one of those two players, but I would rather trade Pep for a couple draft picks and still pick up one of those guys. Of course if we franchise Peppers, and he stays, and then gets to play next to Haynesworth, then it’s on for real in Carolina.
Why are you guys so hung up on getting a QB?
I know, I am not the biggest Jake fan either. But I think you guys are letting that issue cloud your brains when it come to this JP trade. How about we focus on rebuilding the D-Line with this opportunity. I know that Cleveland has D. Anderson, but they also have some talent on the other side of the football. I think they should work out a trade for Shaun Rogers and their first rounder (5th Overall). That would allow us to get a player and a pick. And this draft in stacked with talent at the DE position. You guys have to remember that we have several needs-DE, DT, CB, TE, WR, QB……and let’s not forget that Herm Edwards is going to look to do some interesting things with our Defensive schemes and coaching staff. Just a thought to get us back on track.
-Brett
I don't see QB as a major need (yet)
but we need to get someone young seen and let him, if nothing else, develop behind Delhomme.
Cleveland won’t give us Rogers & their #5… but I agree that defense is a major need. If the team did get a first rounder, I’d target someone like DT Peria Jerry (Ole Miss).
Herm Edwards?
Ugh.
Herm Edwards has already said he’s not interested in being DC… just a secondary coach or something at most.
QB Options
where just that options. This isn’t to say there are many different routes the team could go with a trade. I realize that we have bigger needs, mainly the D-line, but the QB position can’t be ignored to much longer.
I will say, I know Aaron Rodgers would not be making a move. He’s solidly in place at GB, but I figured it would be fun to see what interest there would be from the fans. I’m actually very surprised that 5 people voted for that option (from the current results). I would also be very surprised if we even attempted to trade for Matt Cassell. Besides the fact that it would be an out of character move for Fox I also don’t think it makes since to the team. But if I didn’t ask the question to Patriot fans I wouldn’t have known that they value Cassell over Peppers.
Finally, Derek Anderson would be the most realistic of all of the options. Now with two former Browns coaches, including there QB coach, it make it all that much more intriguing. Will it happen, like the other two I would doubt it. In the end, however, this is all done in the name of fun and pure speculation. After all if you can’t have fun why even speculate.
brett
Did I miss something? WHy did you mention Herm Edwards? Is there a rumor or more that he is taking over as our defensive coordinator? I like that he takes chances and is a motivator, but there’s no guarantee he’ll be a good defensive coordinator…just look at the last time his team got shutout (CAR 34 KC 0).
Either way, we all mention QBs because we need one, but it seems most everyone agrees we don’t need one to start next season, but a QB to develop for the season or two after that. I’m not overly confident Anderson could even beat out Moore for the #2 position. If Fox benches Jake, it would have to be because the new starter is unquestionably better than Jake at every phase of running the offense. Not many QBs are that good.
There’s no way we get Rogers and the 5th pick, but I would love for someone to prove me wrong. I don’t think we have a need for a CB, TE or WR, but some new talent would be nice. Very few CBs could come in and beat out our starters at those positions. Not only that, but I’m expecting Barnidge to have a breakout season next year. I say not many players can beat out our starters because of Fox’s loyalty and because you have to be much, much better than the incumbent to win the starting job. Marshall is a better tackler and bump-n-run player than Lucas, and he’s faster, but he doesn’t start.
call me crazy
So while we’re talking about random free agents, I gotta be honest, I would love for us to bring in LT. It seems that the Chargers fail to realize they had some hurt OL and they lost the best blocking back in football, Lorenzo Neal. LT’s production also dropped off when Schottenheimer left. He is still as good as he was three years ago. Now what we would do with Smash and Dash, I don’t know. I tell you this, though, in my mind, D-Will is the best back in football.
Hate on me if you want, go for it, cuz we ain’t gettin him anyway.
Well, there goes the 3-4...
I think this story is very revealing, but no one seems to agree with me why.
Trgovac is going to coach the DL of a new 3-4 defense! That means he either couldn’t get the Panthers to make the switch to a 3-4 or he was done with calling the shots and wanted less responsibility (not likely to me).
I am fully convinced we’ll bring in a 4-3 guy now. I am sad.
by the bomb dot com on Jan 25, 2009 6:25 PM EST reply actions
I'd love the 3-4
but again, it would take a major overhaul of the D.
Our LBs are too small, and our DE’s are probably too small for the 3-4 too (well, except Peppers… he’s probably too big to be a LB though).
And it would prevent Beason from doing what he does well, which would be stupid because he’s one of our better defenders.
Well it is apparent you misssed the big picture!
Yes it is possible to get Shaun Rogers and Cleveland’s 1ST ROUND PICK! Rogers is not some spring chicken and why not throw Kemo into the mix, he has been sooooo productive. What you amateurs fail to realize is Trgovac went to GB. GB is another team that is interested in aquiring some talent on their D-Line. So how about we get Aaron Kampman and their 1st round pick (9th Overall). Orakpo, Brown, Maybin and Jackson will all be out there. Also, there might be more to to Trgovac’s departure than we know. The bottom line is our D-line needs to be more of a threat. Don’t be surprised, while you guys are waiting for Tom Brady to become a Panther, that the front office looks as this as a golden opportunity to develop our defensive front force.
Yeah, I'm sure Peppers wouldn't mind going to GB
and working with Trgovac yet again, since that’s who he is trying to get away from. I guess I’m just an amateur.
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
Why would they trade a top-10 pick AND Kampman
for Peppers? Aren’t Peppers & Kampman in the same position (aka… better in the 4-3 than the 3-4)? I mean, there’s a reason you haven’t heard of many 290 lb. LBs in the the 3-4… it won’t work too well. And he won’t play 3-4 DE, because that’ll limit his numbers even more.
And nobody is waiting for Brady to become a Panther. We need to get a top-15 pick (maybe top-20), add Peria Jerry, and stick with the 4-3. The move to the 3-4 will take time and at least a minor overhaul (plus a lot of LB’s beefing up)… and Fox probably doesn’t have the time to wait for that.
John Parker Wilson Looked good in the Senior Bowl
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
Eh
looked horrible against Utah though… the pressure got to him and he wasn’t able to play well. And he hasn’t exactly impressed at Alabama.
I’d consider Freeman in the 3rd round if he slips, or maybe (homer pick) Brian Johnson late.
Best idea, IMO, is to stick with Delhomme… the options this year are really depressing.
Oh, and if either offer was on the table
the Panthers would jump on it in a second. Meaning that either the Panthers are totally desperate, or the deal totally favors one team. And the GMs probably aren’t stupid enough to offer one-sided deals that favor us.
A major overhaul of our Defense?
UtesFan89,
You have to be smoking crack! This would be the best time to utilize the 3-4 scheme. We are stacked at all linebacker positions. If you are worried about Beason, Davis, Diggs, Johnson, Seward, Conner and troup being light in the a$$, well I encourage you to put a helmet on and take a shot at any of them. Do some research before you add your imput! The next thing you are going to post is that drafting Tim Biakabutuka was the greatest move in Panther History! If your interested, the man himself can size you up for a Panthers 1# Fan Bracelet in Matthews, NC. I have to state that this is not a paid advertisement for T. Biakabutuka’s place of business. But let this be a sentiment of appreciation for all you did for the Panthers organization and it’s fans, T.B! And as for Jaxon, why don’t you share with us your JP trade speculations! Dom Capers runs a 3-4 scheme, or maybe you forgot who Capers is because you became a Panthers fan when you transplanted to NC from Conn or Penn, or Maine or N.H or NY (Upstate) or Ohio, etc. I think I have made my point you amateur!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sure...
I couldn’t take one of them out.
But the huge OL of other teams will… especially without the DL to block for them and give them the opportunity to attack inside. Seward is the only LB we have over 240… the 3-4 pretty much requires them to be at least 240 (if not more).
And a switch renders our DEs (Johnson, Taylor, etc.) useless… they’re too small to be 3-4 DEs (taking on a blocker and neutralizing them for the rushing LBs) and not mobile enough (well, maybe Taylor is) to be a LB.
You obviously know nothing of me Wells, I'm no transplant
but please tell us what makes you such a Pro. You’ve stated nothing that hasn’t already been discussed on this board so maybe you need to do a little research yourself and stay up on the conversation.

Dude, what grade were you in in 1995?
My guess is 6th.
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
Revshawn, you do not have the background our the skills to battle with me!!!!
UtesFan89,
Your are correct our linebackers would have to gain some size. But I think we can all agree that our trainers/dietitians have the ability to get somebody Huge!(ie. OUR WHOLE O-LINE FROM 2008) AS for Brayton, CUT HIM! He stinks, we would be a whole lot better off with the services of Tommie Harris. That would be a solid outside DT/DE in a 3-4 system. As for Revshawn, I am sorry! I have seen Upstate NY in July and it is beautiful, I just figured you would be a Bills fan! Sorry to offend you! You also forget, the Panthers did not offer JP a contract making him the 5th highest paid defensive player in the NFL. They gave him a contract making him the highest paid defensive player in the NFL. So yes, GB can maatch it and that makes Kampman expendable. It would too much for them to afford, plus why keep another DE in that system? I said it first, PLAYER plus 1st round pick! You all can kiss the ring when it is all said and done!
-Brett
If they all bulk up though
will they be as good as they are now? Someone’s gonna have to bulk up big time to play alongside Beason to make it all work. Because Beason is on the smaller end, if there’s no one blocking the OL for him, he’s going to struggle.
I think back to Jonathan Vilma in NY… struggled in the 3-4 (he’s like Beason in some ways), got frustrated, demanded a trade and got traded to NO, where he had a solid year back in the 4-3.
Kampman has as much experience playing 3-4 LB as Peppers (none)… why would they trade one for the other, while giving up a first rounder with it?
I keep hearing this same argument...
But I see Beason listed at 237 lbs everywhere… and 90% of the ILB in a 3-4 I’ve looked up are in the 235-245 range. You’re right that the OLB would be a little light. Diggs and Davis both at 240, while most guys average 255-2650lbs, with a notable exception:
ROLB James Harrison 242 lbs
I think weights and heights need to be taken with a grain of salt, that’s all. We are blessed to have had a player like Sam Mills in our organization, who is a great example of undersized, underweight guys who had the determination to be very successful.
Anyway, I have come to grips with the idea that we’ll be keeping the 4-3, so this whole post was probably unnecessary, so here is a picture of Mills, from 1997:

by the bomb dot com on Jan 26, 2009 11:20 AM EST up reply actions
Yeah, 10% chance we change defenses
We just need a couple more 4-3 DT’s that can play the run and rush the passer
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
Oh and thanks for the pic of Mills
He is a prime example that measureables don’t measure the heart and even an undersized guy can play MLB in a 3-4.
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
And Steve Smith
Many considered him undersized for WR. and while he is smaller he can play with any of the big boys.
Yes, small guys can do it.
But at some point, heart isn’t enough… when you’ve got a guy that dwarfs you blocking you.
Believe me, I’d love to see the 3-4 implemented (and work). I just don’t see it as a viable option the way the team is built. I think the D would be much better off (no transition time or the likes) if they added a couple of DTs (as Jaxon mentioned) and maybe some DEs.

Just keep up the good work, because some of us can’t get any better info about the Panthers than what is provided on this blog.
Thanks Charlson
Not sure I gave you enough props for being so correct about the Panthers season (getting the 12 wins or more correct). Too bad the SB part didn’t work though.
Thanking for chiming in as you do. I’m anxiously awaiting what ol’ Foxy will do with the defense.
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
Actually six years. 2002-2008
I couldn’t be happier though. Marty Hurney does it again!
