Confirmed: Panthers DC Mike Trgovac Will Not Resign with the Panthers
For whatever reason Panthers Defensive Coordinator Mike Trgovac will not sign the 2 year extension the Panthers offered.
We offered Trgo a contract and told him we wanted him back, but he informed us last night he wanted to pursue other options," said Hurney.
This is good news for a lot of Panthers fans. I want to think this is a good move but it really depends on who we get to replace him AND... a big AND whether Julius Peppers stays. We can only speculate his reasons as this point but I would have to imagine it has something to do with the lack of confidence in his schemes emanating from the fan base and more importantly his key players, namely Peppers.
So John Fox now has to search for a new DC which he better get on quickly as he is behind the eight-ball on this. A lot of the young guys looking to move up have been tapped. You can expect an in-depth post forthcoming on potential candidates so stay tuned.

Herm Edwards
I’ve heard his name thrown out quite a bit as a replacement for Trgovac. He has a history with Foxy. Just rumors for now because he’s still with KC.
I am not sure
how I feel about that to be honest. I think he could make a good defensive coordinator but the defense there in KC during his tenure as coach has been pretty bad.

Jim Haslett?

I'll throw out some names
Listen up Hurney and Fox! I (We) do not want a wash-out ex-HC. Herm and Haslett are terrible, I want some new blood, some guys who are hungry, have a good pedigree, and deserve a shot. McDermott is a great example. Here are some other candidates:
Keith Butler: Steeler LB coach, 2003-present.
Mike Waufle – Giants DL coach, 2004-present.
Clarence Brooks – Ravens DL coach, 2005-present.
Greg Mattison – Ravens LB coach 2008
John Pagano – Chargers OLB Coach 2005-present

Any other 4-3 DCs you've got in mind
beyond Waufle?
We’ve certainly got much of the personnel on-hand to go 3-4, but I just don’t see the will to do that coming from the top (HC/GM).
I could be wrong.
I'm biased...
I want to make the switch to 3-4 (whether we keep Peppers or not). I’m also biased towards getting a DL or LB coach because I feel they will be more tuned into bringing a stronger rush. Finally, I’d rather have someone with recent NFL experience than straight from college.
Here are some other candidates (much weaker than my last list, and not just 4-3 guys, sorry):
Karl Dunbar – Vikings DL coach (not interested in Vikings DC job, assuming he doesn’t want any DC job)
Ted Monachino – Jaguars DL Coach 2008
Mark Duffner – Jaguars LB coach 2006-present
Matt Sheldon – Bills LB Coach 2006-present
Kacy Rodgers – Dolphins DL coach 2008 (this guy seems like a stud in the making)
I just get the feeling after letting our coaching staff get gutted, we’re looking to make a big change in philosophy. I wonder if Sam Mills role will expand now that he is one of the only defensive coaching personnel we’ve retained…

your lists
When I look at your list, I look at guys whose “students” have developed well, excelled and play intense football such as the Steelers and Ravens LB coaches. We have the personnel to play any defense we want, let’s be honest. It’s about effort and desire. Then when you realize a couple guys are maximizing their skills, but they don’t exactly fit, we find replacements, but don’t tell me our 13 defensive millionaires (starters plus Marshall and Connor) couldn’t handle it. But when you have a DC that doesn’t teach, develop talent, or provide any fuel for motivation, then there’s a problem. The Ravens aren’t in the Superbowl, we know that, but when you measure effort, can anyone remember a game where the Ravens lost because they looked like they weren’t in the mood to play? How about the Panthers? How about the ARI game, and the Vikings loss, the loss to the Bucs, and the defense against ATL? I want effort, and the guys on these lists have developed talent and coached not only technique, but attitude. I bet Peppers would never have felt this way if we had a fired-up, intense, creative DC instead of the invisible man.
Free at last!
I like Pagano, but most anyone listed, I think would be an improvement. Too much talent to have the blown assignments, and lack of scheming.
