Panthers Must Now Pick Up the Pieces of a Bittersweet Season

We are now 24 hours removed from the Panthers sudden season-ending and soul-crushing loss to the Arizona Cardinals. Now that the emotion (and hangover) is subsiding I am faced with the cold reality that the Panthers season is over. The Panthers start their offseason with a lot of questions, first and foremost what to do, if anything, about the QB position. Rest assured Panther fans you can be confident this blog will cover the Panther offseason diligently and objectively, if that is possible. So if you haven't done it already sign up for an account now.

Before addressing the big issues I want to tip my hat to the Arizona Cardinals and their fans over at Revenge of the Birds. They played a good game, took advantage of the Panthers mistakes and are now hosting the NFC Championship game. Congratulations and I hope you enjoy the ride (and what was supposed to be our happy-ever after!).

The Panthers have some big decisions to make in this off-season, among them the following:

more after the jump...

Star-divide

  • Should the Panthers consider a switch at QB? Of course Fox was supportive of QB Jake Delhomme after the game, that's just Fox. I'm sure he means it but hopefully someone will ask the question as to whether Delhomme has seen his best days
  • Which players should they resign? They have quite a list of big names to address:

o       Julius Peppers: After putting up a career high number of sacks he's going to be expensive. He might be the Panther most enticing trade bait for draft picks too. What to do, what to do?

o       Jordan Gross: His first Pro Bowl selection will drive his price up. Given how hard it is to find competent LT's it would hurt to let him walk.

o       Ken Lucas: The fan lightening rod may be the first to go. I bet he doesn't wait long before he starts considering other offers.

  • What happened to the defense? The defense that started the season shutting down some of the best RB's in the league withered in the end of the season. Both the run defense and the pass defense failed to make the big plays that were fairly common for the first half of the season. A big part of the reason was an anemic pass rush that put too much pressure on a secondary grown accustomed to playing soft zones. I don't think there is a single phase of the defense, wehter it be the line, the linebackers or the secondary, that can't be improved with personnel changes.
  • Should they consider any coaching changes? The Panthers late season swoon on defense has to be a concern. Whether it was a focused running attack or a highflying passing attack, the Panthers at times appeared helpless to stop opposing offenses.

o       HC John Fox: Fox should be secure after bringing home a division crown, 12 wins and a #2 conference seed. He may be inclined to shrug this one off as an anomaly but he has to balance that with a very tough schedule in 2009. If he only tweaks this roster the Panthers could struggle next year.

o       OC Jeff Davidson: Until the loss to the Cardinals the offense had been a juggernaut. That loss aside, the Panther offense played well and was effective. I would not have a problem taking the same offense into next season

o       DC Mike Tyrgovac: A strong start by the defense turned into a late season swoon that may have Tyrgovac in the hot seat. This defense lost its confidence as it seemed the opposing offenses were in their huddle. If Fox is looking for a fall guy the defense would be an easy target.

o       Special Teams Danny Crossman: Crossman's unit recovered from a horrible start to finally get a unit that could make plays. Will it be enough to keep his job?

  • What free agents should they pursue? Though all those listed below could be franchised it is always fun to dream.

o       QB Matt Cassell: Will the Patriots let him walk? Cassell is sure to command a high price but the Panthers rarely pursue the big names in the offseason. I have to admit I find the thought intriguing

o       WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh: The Panthers still appear to need another WR who can make a big play with his hands.

o       DT Albert Haynesworth: The Panther defensive line would get a sudden burst from the elite All Pro.

o       CB Nnamdi Asomugha: Did the Panthers face a better CB in the season? Not hardly.

  • What will their draft priorities be? The Panthers won't get their first pick until late in the 2nd round, making the chances of getting a playmaker appear limited.
    • Defense: The Panthers need a playmaker on defense, whether it comes from the line or in the secondary will not matter. The line obviously lacks depth and secondary has lost its edge. Though the linebacking corps looks strong and deep it may be time to part with some veterans.
    • Offense: Though the Panthers offense looked great at times they could still use another WR and some depth on the line. Much will depend on the progress of G MacKenzy Bernadeau and the injury to Keydrick Vincent.
    • Special Teams: Will the Panthers get a punt returner? KR Mark Jones improved dramatically and should return next season but he took too many fair catches in the punt game.

Your Cat Scratch Reader writers will be covering all these topics in depth during the off-season. Your input is not only welcome but it is requested. Were just fans that enjoy talking about our favorite pastime and NFL team the Carolina Panthers. The main stream media sources may slack off on their Panther coverage over the next few months but we at CSR will still be here hammering away. I look forward to hearing from each of you.

I really, really

hope we don’t go after Cassel. I know we don’t tend to chase big name FAs… and while I would like that to change, I hope he’s not the one they have in mind.

Haynesworth would be nice, but highly unlikely we can fit him if we resign Peppers/Gross (which I think should be the top priority). That said, I personally believe we need another DT.

Houshmandzadeh would be nice… but I don’t see us getting another top WR… especially if we’re going to remain a running team. We need guys that’ll catch the ball, but won’t cost a ton. I like names like Shaun McDonald (Lions) or Brian Robiskie (through the draft)… not huge names, but they’ll play and catch the ball.

Aso will be franchise tagged, unless the Raiders are very, very stupid. And if he isn’t, most of the league will be after him and he’ll be out of our price range. A solid CB opposite Gamble would be nice though… I guess the team has to decide whether or not Marshall is that guy.

Marshall makes some bone-headed plays sometimes

Like that unsportsman-like penalty he got. He can get burned at times too.

The Panthers front office/management will have some tough decisions this offseason

And I think the #1 priority is to resign both free agents to be, Julius Peppers and Jordan Gross. If Peppers isn’t resigned (the unimagineable), then I think management should look at free agency to get atleast one big name defensive player (Asomugha or Haynesworth comes to mind).

well...

they dramatically fixed their offense last year and it turned out well…obviously with the exception of this past weekend. I think this offseason the focus should be on the defense and getting a ravens or steelers-like defense. i know its highly unlikely to be accomplished in one offseason, especially if we lose peppers, but it would be nice to start working on it. getting rid of lucas and finding another CB and finding some good backup lineman is a start. oh and getting rid of tyrgovac.

i would also look into a new QB. Maybe give Moore a chance next year. But at the very least draft someone, or through free agency (Matt Cassel??), get someone who could be a viable backup if he doesn’t shine. I would love to have a QB in Carolina that could compliment the running game with the efficiency in the passing game with the likes of Manning or Brady. Unlikely, but hey I can dream.

Also, a WR would be nice. I’d keep Moose, he’s the best blocking WR I’ve seen and did good. Keep him another year. We’ll have Robinson and Carter back so we can see how those guys do, maybe they’ll be great. If not I’d say free agency is our best bet at a new WR, the draft is too much of a hit or miss. I’d say drop Hackett, maybe trade him and Lucas and someone else as a package for someone, go for Houshmandzadeh, or try and get a 1st round draft pick back.

my two cents

I think we should go for what we definitley know we need now. Get a good DT like we use to have in jenkings. Haynesworth would be the best but may be too expensive for us and probably will be resigned by tennessee. next get a QB that we can sit for maybe one season behind delhomme. unless moore proves himself a starter now. otherwise we should draft someone like a chase daniels in draft and give him a year or two to develop. the other choice we have is to give moore one year or (gulp) give delhomme another year to try n redeem himself, n then draft a qb like Tebow next year.

top needs: DT, QB, CB, a defensive coordinator

DT, QB, LB, WR, and TE

We’ve got to get some more players, but we need to do something with the guys we have. We need another really big DT to stuff the run. We need a QB to develop because I don’t believe any QB can come in and outperform Jake next year except guys who already have big contracts. You gotta think that Foxy wasn’t totally surprised by this. He brought in David Carr, Matt Moore and Josh McCOwn over the last two years for a reason. None of those guys are as clutch as Jake (please try and forget the last game as you read that.)

As for LB, TE and WR, what’s really going on? We signed Landon Johnson, drafted Dan Connor and Gary Barnidge in the 3rd rd, brought in Moose and Hackett, and have Carter, Robinson, and Jarrett on the bench. Some of those guys have to go. Connor was injured for the season, and I think he can be a star in this league, but how can he get on the field with Beason playing so well. Would it be too hard for him to move to the outside? I think Hackett, Robinson and Jarrett have to go. That leaves us Moose, Smitty and Carter. Maybe we keep Jarrett, too.

Barnidge is the smoothest and fastest TE on the roster. I read that somewhere but I never saw him make a play.

And what’s up with Brett Basanez?

We have a lot of personnel issues, but I think we have a strong nucleus in place to be competitive for years to come.

No one will beat out Jake

Similar to the Packer-Favre scenario. The Panthers will just have to make a clean break as no one could come in and know the playbook like him. Jake needs to do some soul searching in the off-season. Is he willing to do what it takes to get better?

No one considers Josh McCown but he has had some good games int he NFL. He could have a Steve Burlein type of impact on the Panthers possibly, if the Panthers part ways with Delhomme and Moore or whoever is left is not ready.

Fox football doesn't need a great QB

If we can run the ball, and play better defense then we do not need a great QB. All we really needed Sat night was for a QB to NOT make mistakes. Jake can be great at times, but he will always eventually play like a bone head.

With the Fox formula and an improved D, we can win with an average QB who DOESN’T make too many mistakes.

He was released

Signed to Tampa or Jags practice squad. During the preseason when moore was injured we then resigned him to our practice squad. I think he’s still there.

Danny Crossman needs to get the Ax

Special teams is a fairly easy thing to teach. Lots of coaches out there to teach that. Those three blocked punts in the beginning of the year were beyond frusterating. Helped cost us the game against the Vikings.

Ken Lucas will get the boot this year. You can count on that. DJ is gone. Landon Johnson never lived up to his hype so he’s gone. If we can’t resign Peppers, Gross is expected to walk unless we sign him to a contract because we will give Peppers a franchise tag.

TJ Housh should get a look. He’s been a great wideout for many years now, and he’ll be a great addition to our passing game if we don’t overpay too much. Our biggest need is a defensive tackle. Anyone on the defensive line coming into FA should get a look, especially in the DT position. I’d love to see a mass DL signing similar to the mass OL signing we had last year to fix the O-Line.

Irreguardless of what anyone says, I like Matt Cassel. I think he could find a home here if we can get him. He’s never going to have the arm to throw an accurate ball downfield, but he can convert on 3rd down. That’s all I really want in a QB.

Changes

I think the two biggest changes that have to be made are to the defense and to the receiving core. The defense was without a doubt below average this year. We ended the year at 20th in the league and I know stats are for losers but this stat can not be denied. I think we resigned the wrong guy in keeping Gamble, if we are going to force him to play a soft zone all the time then we are wasting his talents. Same thing with Richard Marshall who did seem like he regressed this year. I have never seen so much confusion in the secondary than I saw this year. I think the biggest change is going to have to be a defensive coordinator. Regardless of whether he deserves it or not, Trgo has to go. The defense is much more talented than they are showing.

I think another receiver is a great choice as well. To activate only three receivers for a game is just very odd to me. As much as I like Dwayne Jarrett and Moose, we need a guy that can actually take pressure off Smith. Most of all, I think Jeff Davidson needs to design plays to get the ball to Smith, there is no excuse for Smith not running reverses and other plays designed to get him the ball. Those are the two biggest things I think need fixing.

One other thing that irriates me is that when we go to a 4/5 wide receiver set, there is either one/two tight ends out there. I would feel much better if we actually had 4 competent wide receivers on the roster.

The running game takes the pressure off Smith

I agree with you about our D, but our receivers are fine. If Jake had thrown the ball away instead of forcing it, we still would have had a chance. They would not have kept getting the ball on a short field and we could have kept running the ball.

I can’t afford to waste a pick or trade on a receiver when we have to find people who can cover on D, and find a pass rush.

I do agree

but I think I just get tired of 2 TE in a 5 WR set. I think we should spend draft picks on a cornerback, a DT, and apparently we are going to need a DE. I was beyond disappointed in the defense in the second half of the year. I felt like it was worse than it really showed too. Too many miscommunications in the secondary (and I don’t think it was all attributed to having a rookie safety) and I just felt like teams could run the ball against us.

It makes me upset to hear Larry Fitzgerald quoted as saying we ran the same scheme the first game as the second game and John Fox in essence saying the same thing, then saying they do not shadow receivers with a safety/LB. I feel like it is shortsighted because as it showed Sat. night and even against the TB on Monday night, that is a real area of weakness for us. I feel like the defense has underachieved a lot and I am not sure if it is Fox’s fault or Trgo’s fault. I just remember a John Fox defense being more aggressive than the one that showed up the last part of this year.

by bengoodfella on Jan 12, 2009 5:41 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Two biggest priorites

in my opinion are new Defense coordinator and new DT. I think signing a Haynesworth type of player allows the rest of the D to step up. If the front 4 can get pressure then that leaves 7 that can drop back into pass coverage. Our LB core is solid. Yes there is questions about the secondary specifically Lucas, but he has played better. There was just something going on there. Also, our D-coord can’t be afraid to play man or tight coverage.

As far as QB, I am actually okay with another Delhomme season if that means we can fix the D. But I see that as our next need and I don’t want to see two more Delhomme seasons. If Fox is back in two years, my guess is that McCown would get the nod. I wouldn’t mind having Cassel but he’s going to be too expensive.

Of course this is all assuming we resign Gross and Peppers, which is no guarantee.

Signing Haynesworth would excite the fanbase again.

Haynesworth

I am afraid when he gets a big contract his production is going to drop and he will start stepping on people’s heads again. He could be another Kris Jenkins and also I don’t really need to get excited about any signings, I need the signings to be smart and effectively fill a need the team has.
