Cardinals vs. Panthers Playoff Game Day Open Thread

Arizona Cardinals at Carolina Panthers, Jan 10, 2009 8:00 PM EST

I couldn't help but start this thread a little early as game day has finally arrived yet we still have to wait ALL DAY. For me tonights game is about making a statement that the Panthers are truly one of the best four teams in the NFL. If they win tonight then the rest is all gravy. See, I lost my youthful idealism at least a decade ago. I don't require Super Bowl trips every year, I don't need to blow out every team and have a roster full of PB players (though 2 All-Pros is nice!). A division championship and at least one playoff victory will do just fine. A home crowd in a frenzy, a team fired up and making plays, now that is what NFL football it is all about. I fully expect the Panthers to play well tonight and make us proud. If they then take the next step then we can all be grateful and enjoy the ride!

Game Predictions:

  • Both RB DeAngelo Williams and WR Steve Smith will score - Just getting the easy ones out of the way
  • DE Julius Peppers will get a sack - Okay, still not going out on a limb.
  • So where will the turnovers come from? I think SS Chris Harris will finally get another forced fumble and CB Chris Gamble will get a pick.
  • I think the Panthers need a good game from rookie FS Charles Godfrey. Good meaning no mistakes that lead to Cardinals scores and maybe a couple key pass break ups. He does well coming up to support the run but hopefully the Panthers will tell him not to focus on that. We need to make sure any WR going deep is double covered.
  • RT Jeff Otah gets his first action against DT Darnell Dockett. I want to see Otah plow him 7 yards downfield like he did DT Tommie Harris. The Cardinals will focus on stopping the run and that's why the Panthers need to run the ball early, to destroy their will and determination. Getting an early lead by running the ball will fire up the home crowd.

It it also time for another roll call - playoff edition. Let us hear from you Panther fans, come out of the cyber-shadows and let your presence be known! Where are you from? Where are watching the game from?

If the Panthers win the toss I bet they do not defer to the second half

They will take the ball.

I cannot wait

Guys like Smith, Peppers, Delhomme, and Beason should and likely will have big games including some key plays like a sack here (from Pep) and a long run (from Smith).

Oh and lets not forget about the biggest Panther of all (literally), Maake Kemoeatu. His presense should help both Johnson and Peppers get to Warner more easily.

I'm here (at least right now)

sitting in my room, where I’ll be watching the game.

I don’t know many other Panthers fans in Utah (in fact, I can’t think of one), so I’ll be alone.

Loving it in Redskin nation

Watching the game with friends in D.C. as the lone Panthers fan..but I actually think I like it that way. Especially the way we play this year!!!! GO PANTHERS!!!!!

Inactives

The Panthers deactivated WR D.J. Hackett, DT Darwin Walker, DTJ’Vonne Parker, LB Adam Seward, S Quinton Teal, WR Kenny Moore, C Mackenzy Bernardeau and third QB Matt Moore.

This game on the other hand...

if the Panthers make it to the SB, they’re going to have a very hard time running the ball.

by UtesFan89 on Jan 10, 2009 7:22 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Why do you say that?

If Baltimore reaches the SB, weren’t they team that got steam rolled by the Giants running attack? And while the Steelers defense is stout, they’re offense often times put their defense in tough positions so I’m not quite getting your logic.

by ChipperTeixeira89 on Jan 10, 2009 7:30 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

The Ravens & Steelers D's

have both been really strong as of late.

Of course, I missed the first half of today’s game… maybe Chris Johnson was running better then LenDale. And I’d agree about the Steelers O, but that won’t really make it easier to run on their LBs.

Now if it’s the Chargers…

by UtesFan89 on Jan 10, 2009 7:46 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Inactives

Cardinals declared TE Ben Patrick, CB Eric Green, LB Victor Hobson, T Elliot Vallejo, T Brandon Keith, DT Alan Branch, and QB Brian St. Pierre inactive against the Panthers.

In watching Kerry Collins lose in the playoffs, wonder how is heart is now?!?!?!??!!?

As a LIFETIME panthers fan I can’t stand that guy!!!
I’m not saying I wish he woulda died when he was drinking and driving that night in charlotte, but I wouldn’t have been sad had he blown out a shoulder or knee and ended his career…
do other panther fans feel the same way or do they feel sorry for him because he was “sick”

He is

as is Warner.

Luckily for both QBs, they have WRs that’ll go get the ball.

Rain coming down.

We really need Delhomme to play mistake free ball

by UtesFan89 on Jan 10, 2009 8:48 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Does rain

help the running game or passing game more?

I read somewhere recently that it helps receivers more b/c they know where they are going and can cut and CB’s cuts can’t keep up… bad for lucas and company…

what do you guys think?

by ClaytonFire on Jan 10, 2009 8:49 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Running game, I think

because it’s harder for the QBs to hold onto the ball in the rain.

as turnovers have killed us. I love Jake but he’s let us down tonight. 3TD deficit? Too much to overcome against a fired up Cardinal team

Horrible game-planning, as you said

defensively & offensively.
They D’d up well on Smith, we can’t say the same about our D on Fitz.
They stopped our run on 1 drive (the one we started at like the 10), and we haven’t gone back since.

What the hell?

This is Revshawn stopping in for a moment. What a bunch of bull crap!

1. Why the hell is the offensive coordinator calling this bull crap? Passing plays on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd down? Have we forgotten what the hell got us to the playoffs in the first place? Bull shit!

2. Jake Delhomme! What the hell? Quit throwing the ball ten or twenty yards on every play into double coverage! Throw the screens! Throw it to someone close to you! Don’t throw it at a friggen defender!

3. DOUBLETEAM FRIGGEN LARRY! What the hell are they doing? He’s their entire offense! Every single play they’re throwing it to friggen Larry Fittz. It’s annoying as hell! Who came up with the bright idea to play zone coverage during this game? That’s all fine and good. But for gods sake, make sure he has two guys on him! Don’t let him get behind the defence!

4. Call more blitzes! Don’t overload the line, but get some pressure on Warner. He’s having a nap back there it’s taking so long.

This game is horrible….absolutely horrible. Mostly it’s the coaching staff that’s pissing me off, but for gods sake, we’re giving the game to them. 3 Bloody turnovers. Three! That’s the story of this game.

My thoughts...

1- Agreed. We went away from the run way too early.
2- Agreed. What else to say? Maybe a couple screens to Smith?
3- Agreed. This is the most frustrating (I think… they’re all bad). You know they’re going to throw it to him.
4- Agreed. We need to get pressure… just 1 sack (by Johnson) so far.
Turnovers… Agreed.

Jake.

Some of you might want to go and change your vote on my Ultimate Facebook Group fanpost poll.

Jaxon, Jake is your MVP? Come on man.

Some lighter news. We are down by 20. And we came back from down 17 last game, and we beat them by four. Do the math. Its possible.

by jamieclayton on Jan 10, 2009 9:56 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Jamie, this has never happened before.

This is the first game this season that they’ve given the ball to Jake time and time again. The running game worked on the first possession. They gave the ball to Williams and he went for a 40 yard gain, then Stewart finished it off with a 10 yard gain.

Jake is good for 2nd and short and 3rd and short. Don’t give it to him like it’s a friggen West Coast offense! Bull!

by Revshawn on Jan 10, 2009 9:59 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

That was different. The running game was stopped for whatever reason.

Jake was forced to throw on 3rd and long. This game they’re just throwing the ball on every single play. Did we even run the ball in the second half?

did we even have the ball in the 2nd quarter?

by UtesFan89 on Jan 10, 2009 10:03 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

That said

it might be too late to go back to the run.
Down 20, and the Cards get the ball first.
The D really needs to step up here… the lack of TOs caused is going to kill us as well.

by UtesFan89 on Jan 10, 2009 10:01 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed

We’ll definately need to pass more, but I would still call the run a bit even if just to start the 2nd Quarter.

We have to keep a balanced offense. We score here, get the ball back and score again, it’s a game.

To give Jake the ball again would be the worst thing we could do. He’d just chuck a prayer down the field.

I’d rather give Jake the ball in the 4th Quarter. That’s where he earns this money.

We still have to run the ball and keep a balanced offense though.

Even if we run just to start the 2nd Quarter, the worst thing we can do is give the ball to Jake and let him start throwing prayers.

41 yds rushing on the 1st drive. 9 the rest of the 1st half

Why in the world did the Panthers decide to throw the ball? The Cardinals cannot stop the run, the Panthers are one the best running teams so run the ball and let the clock tick. Terrible game plan. Delhomme is not good in big games.

Personally, I think we need

a DT (someone behind Kemo/Lewis would be huge, if nothing else)
a CB (Lucas needs to go)
a DE (if Peppers leaves, which is doubtful)
a OT (if Gross leaves, which seems more likely)
a QB (?… maybe wait till next year and hope for McCoy or Sanchez?)
a WR (please, no one from USC)
a OG (maybe, is Vincent the guy here?)

TV is off guys. This game is over.

We had a good season. Tied our best for 12-4. Look forward for a good off-season coverage. That’s the part of the business I like the most.

I don’t blame John Fox at all. You can’t blame him for this. This is just Jake being Jake. He rebounded this team from 7-9 to the favored team to win the NFC. I say you keep Marty Hurney, keep John Fox, look for a replacement with the offensive coordinator. Maybe….if someone is out there that’s better, take him.

This is probably going to speed up our search for a new QB though. With Jake melting down like this, it’s just sad. Five turnovers and they’re all his fault. Jake lost this game for us. Jake, with all his 4th Quarter heroics has blown the Panthers playoff appearance.

By the way, I turned the TV back on.

IF the Eagles get past the Gnats,

playing AZ is easier than playing Carolina. We should thank the Cards, I guess.

Or Delhomme

he’s been as much (if not more) help to you.

Sorry

but this has just turned funny now.

by UtesFan89 on Jan 10, 2009 10:59 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

it doesn't hurt as much as it seems

just because most are team wasn’t bad our playcalling and delhomme were teh culprits here

plz

to run the ball everytime from here on out, no Delhomme, stewart and d-will in the backfield!

WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT PASS!!!!!!!1

Personally

I live in SLC. So no idea.

But I’m certain they were a ton more excited than they are now.

Defense has been playing great.

Only 3 points in the 2nd half.

Yeah but

Defense is playing great because Arizona is sitting back and not pusing it because they don’t have to. How many sacks does the defense have?

Sorry for us

I feel sorry for us as we are the ones who have a right to expect the team to care and they sure don’t seem to care tonight

by catch52 on Jan 10, 2009 11:05 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

They cared...

The coaches were almost as stupid in the first half as Jake Delhomme today.

Two guys I blame today. Jake Delhomme, and both coordinators in the 1st half.

Good luck, Charger fan...

You got some tough teams ahead of you.

by JJinPA on Jan 10, 2009 11:06 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

WOW, this is like watching a trainwreck in slow motion. You know, the Fox guys all picked Carolina too. That must have been the bad luck charm.

by JJinPA on Jan 10, 2009 11:10 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Well, I guess we could put Matt Moore in

Give him some playoff experience.

That would've been nice

early in the 4th quarter.

Now it just seems like a waste of his time and ours.

Can anyone say Bill Cowher?

We need a change – this is same old same old

by catch52 on Jan 10, 2009 11:11 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Yep.

I don’t think Cowher is gonna coach next year though.

by UtesFan89 on Jan 10, 2009 11:12 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

This division is not what everyone thought

Despite the love fest on tv think this proves that this division is a lot weaker than what people thought

by catch52 on Jan 10, 2009 11:15 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Nah.

Just proves that our coaches can’t gameplan worth a sh!t.

Oh, and that the Cards are really excited to be in the playoffs.

by UtesFan89 on Jan 10, 2009 11:15 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Cowher re-signed with CBS. He won’t be coaching next year.

by JJinPA on Jan 10, 2009 11:15 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

that is the problem

the season was fake – if the Owner doesn’t realize that we will be sitting here next year looking at another bust – this team IS representative of last years 7 and 9 seasons

by catch52 on Jan 10, 2009 11:17 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

For all the good in the season

if you don’t win in the playoffs, the season means absolutely nothing.

How about Jacket

I am in NJ and I wore my Panther NFL Jacket yesterday to annoy the Giant fans – now I need to hide my head in shame

i’m big on the whole “loyalty” thing, but seriously… at some point, the decision makers have to see that it’s not working…

thanks to Fox & Delhomme for getting us to the SB, but we can’t keep them around for next 20 years in hopes of a repeat performance. At some point, you have to move on

Am also a Buffalo Bills fan and trust me I know bad coaching and bad quarterbacking and this is classic bad

by catch52 on Jan 10, 2009 11:25 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

My point exactly

Get this. D-Williams 12 carries for 62 yards.

Why give him only 12 carries. This is insanity.

I think he should

it’s over.
Thanks for a great run, but it obviously isn’t working. You, and your QB, and your DC & ST coach & maybe even OC…

by UtesFan89 on Jan 10, 2009 11:27 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

But it is working.

He brought back our running game didn’t he? He brought the Panthers to the playoffs.

It isn’t his fault for Jake throwing a game. He literally blew this game. It’s his fault, and the coordinators fault for calling such stupid plays.

That was the new OC

and he went away from it after the first drive tonight.

And getting to playoffs means nothing when you’re the #2 seed and totally stink up the joint at home, going away from what worked, and letting the predictable offense (occasional run, lots of passes to Fitz) totally dismantle you.

THANKS ALL -

Nite all and thanks for helping make this livable – until next year and hopefully the Panthers will look a whole lot different – ENJOY THE REST OF THE PLAYOFFS and thanks again

Alright guys. Bye then.

It is a sad day, but hey you can’t win them all. I’ll see you all next year. Don’t be strangers. Come back to the blog often!

I tip my hat off to guys like Beason, Smith, and Chris Harris

EVERYONE else that was wearing a Panther jersey though, just WOW. Only those three kept playing (who cares about the score) for the whole 60 minutes.

by ChipperTeixeira89 on Jan 10, 2009 11:53 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

And before everyone throws Delhomme under the bus

Was it just me or did the o-line struggle more than a couple times to pass block? I’m not saying Jake should get a pass on all the turnovers (6 in all, I know), but everyone player on a team is responsible for doing his job. Jake did do his poorly, but so did the offensive line and others on the team as well.

by ChipperTeixeira89 on Jan 10, 2009 11:58 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, the OL was bad

but most of the ints were on him.

Bad passes (the screen into triple coverage), bad decisions or just not seeing the D (the first one and more)…
More time for Delhomme would’ve been nice… I don’t know how he would’ve used it though.

by UtesFan89 on Jan 11, 2009 12:11 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Nah I saw a few that was Jake's fault

I don’t blame the fumble, but the other INT’s were all on him.
