Cardinals vs. Panthers Playoff Game Day Open Thread

Arizona Cardinals @ Carolina Panthers

I couldn't help but start this thread a little early as game day has finally arrived yet we still have to wait ALL DAY. For me tonights game is about making a statement that the Panthers are truly one of the best four teams in the NFL. If they win tonight then the rest is all gravy. See, I lost my youthful idealism at least a decade ago. I don't require Super Bowl trips every year, I don't need to blow out every team and have a roster full of PB players (though 2 All-Pros is nice!). A division championship and at least one playoff victory will do just fine. A home crowd in a frenzy, a team fired up and making plays, now that is what NFL football it is all about. I fully expect the Panthers to play well tonight and make us proud. If they then take the next step then we can all be grateful and enjoy the ride!

Game Predictions:

  • Both RB DeAngelo Williams and WR Steve Smith will score - Just getting the easy ones out of the way
  • DE Julius Peppers will get a sack - Okay, still not going out on a limb.
  • So where will the turnovers come from? I think SS Chris Harris will finally get another forced fumble and CB Chris Gamble will get a pick.
  • I think the Panthers need a good game from rookie FS Charles Godfrey. Good meaning no mistakes that lead to Cardinals scores and maybe a couple key pass break ups. He does well coming up to support the run but hopefully the Panthers will tell him not to focus on that. We need to make sure any WR going deep is double covered.
  • RT Jeff Otah gets his first action against DT Darnell Dockett. I want to see Otah plow him 7 yards downfield like he did DT Tommie Harris. The Cardinals will focus on stopping the run and that's why the Panthers need to run the ball early, to destroy their will and determination. Getting an early lead by running the ball will fire up the home crowd.

It it also time for another roll call - playoff edition. Let us hear from you Panther fans, come out of the cyber-shadows and let your presence be known! Where are you from? Where are watching the game from?

If the Panthers win the toss I bet they do not defer to the second half

They will take the ball.

I cannot wait

Guys like Smith, Peppers, Delhomme, and Beason should and likely will have big games including some key plays like a sack here (from Pep) and a long run (from Smith).

Oh and lets not forget about the biggest Panther of all (literally), Maake Kemoeatu. His presense should help both Johnson and Peppers get to Warner more easily.

I'm here (at least right now)

sitting in my room, where I’ll be watching the game.

I don’t know many other Panthers fans in Utah (in fact, I can’t think of one), so I’ll be alone.

Loving it in Redskin nation

Watching the game with friends in D.C. as the lone Panthers fan..but I actually think I like it that way. Especially the way we play this year!!!! GO PANTHERS!!!!!

Inactives

The Panthers deactivated WR D.J. Hackett, DT Darwin Walker, DTJ’Vonne Parker, LB Adam Seward, S Quinton Teal, WR Kenny Moore, C Mackenzy Bernardeau and third QB Matt Moore.

about an 1 hour away

the anticipation is brutal

by JStew28 on Jan 10, 2009 7:21 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

This game on the other hand...

if the Panthers make it to the SB, they’re going to have a very hard time running the ball.

by UtesFan89 on Jan 10, 2009 7:22 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Why do you say that?

If Baltimore reaches the SB, weren’t they team that got steam rolled by the Giants running attack? And while the Steelers defense is stout, they’re offense often times put their defense in tough positions so I’m not quite getting your logic.

by ChipperTeixeira89 on Jan 10, 2009 7:30 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The Ravens & Steelers D's

have both been really strong as of late.

Of course, I missed the first half of today’s game… maybe Chris Johnson was running better then LenDale. And I’d agree about the Steelers O, but that won’t really make it easier to run on their LBs.

Now if it’s the Chargers…

by UtesFan89 on Jan 10, 2009 7:46 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Inactives

Cardinals declared TE Ben Patrick, CB Eric Green, LB Victor Hobson, T Elliot Vallejo, T Brandon Keith, DT Alan Branch, and QB Brian St. Pierre inactive against the Panthers.

Anyone else take secret joy

In watching Kerry Collins lose in the playoffs, wonder how is heart is now?!?!?!??!!?

As a LIFETIME panthers fan I can’t stand that guy!!!
I’m not saying I wish he woulda died when he was drinking and driving that night in charlotte, but I wouldn’t have been sad had he blown out a shoulder or knee and ended his career…
do other panther fans feel the same way or do they feel sorry for him because he was “sick”

yeah

don’t think that was on Lucas

Fitz pulled a steve Smith and went up and got the ball…

How come when jake does that ppl say he’s just heaving it up and praying?

by ClaytonFire on Jan 10, 2009 8:37 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He is

as is Warner.

Luckily for both QBs, they have WRs that’ll go get the ball.

don’t let Ari offense get confident and in a rhythm…

Rain coming down.

We really need Delhomme to play mistake free ball

by UtesFan89 on Jan 10, 2009 8:48 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Does rain

help the running game or passing game more?

I read somewhere recently that it helps receivers more b/c they know where they are going and can cut and CB’s cuts can’t keep up… bad for lucas and company…

what do you guys think?

by ClaytonFire on Jan 10, 2009 8:49 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Running game, I think

because it’s harder for the QBs to hold onto the ball in the rain.

Horrible game-planning, as you said

defensively & offensively.
They D’d up well on Smith, we can’t say the same about our D on Fitz.
They stopped our run on 1 drive (the one we started at like the 10), and we haven’t gone back since.

Missed the FG

finally something goes the Panthers way.

Sadly, it happened a couple of hours too late.

OUCH! Thank god for halftime!

So...

this is over barring a miraculous comeback that would be one for the ages.

Do we root for someone now? Or just look ahead to the draft?

What the hell?

This is Revshawn stopping in for a moment. What a bunch of bull crap!

1. Why the hell is the offensive coordinator calling this bull crap? Passing plays on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd down? Have we forgotten what the hell got us to the playoffs in the first place? Bull shit!

2. Jake Delhomme! What the hell? Quit throwing the ball ten or twenty yards on every play into double coverage! Throw the screens! Throw it to someone close to you! Don’t throw it at a friggen defender!

3. DOUBLETEAM FRIGGEN LARRY! What the hell are they doing? He’s their entire offense! Every single play they’re throwing it to friggen Larry Fittz. It’s annoying as hell! Who came up with the bright idea to play zone coverage during this game? That’s all fine and good. But for gods sake, make sure he has two guys on him! Don’t let him get behind the defence!

4. Call more blitzes! Don’t overload the line, but get some pressure on Warner. He’s having a nap back there it’s taking so long.

This game is horrible….absolutely horrible. Mostly it’s the coaching staff that’s pissing me off, but for gods sake, we’re giving the game to them. 3 Bloody turnovers. Three! That’s the story of this game.

My thoughts...

1- Agreed. We went away from the run way too early.
2- Agreed. What else to say? Maybe a couple screens to Smith?
3- Agreed. This is the most frustrating (I think… they’re all bad). You know they’re going to throw it to him.
4- Agreed. We need to get pressure… just 1 sack (by Johnson) so far.
Turnovers… Agreed.

Jake.

Some of you might want to go and change your vote on my Ultimate Facebook Group fanpost poll.

Jaxon, Jake is your MVP? Come on man.

Some lighter news. We are down by 20. And we came back from down 17 last game, and we beat them by four. Do the math. Its possible.

Jamie, this has never happened before.

This is the first game this season that they’ve given the ball to Jake time and time again. The running game worked on the first possession. They gave the ball to Williams and he went for a 40 yard gain, then Stewart finished it off with a 10 yard gain.

Jake is good for 2nd and short and 3rd and short. Don’t give it to him like it’s a friggen West Coast offense! Bull!

That was different. The running game was stopped for whatever reason.

Jake was forced to throw on 3rd and long. This game they’re just throwing the ball on every single play. Did we even run the ball in the second half?

2nd quarter*

did we even have the ball in the 2nd quarter?

That said

it might be too late to go back to the run.
Down 20, and the Cards get the ball first.
The D really needs to step up here… the lack of TOs caused is going to kill us as well.

Agreed

We’ll definately need to pass more, but I would still call the run a bit even if just to start the 2nd Quarter.

We have to keep a balanced offense. We score here, get the ball back and score again, it’s a game.

To give Jake the ball again would be the worst thing we could do. He’d just chuck a prayer down the field.

I’d rather give Jake the ball in the 4th Quarter. That’s where he earns this money.

We still have to run the ball and keep a balanced offense though.

Even if we run just to start the 2nd Quarter, the worst thing we can do is give the ball to Jake and let him start throwing prayers.

Need to stop them first

and semi-good field position would be nice too

That would be nice yes.

I have to wonder

maybe someone should try to strip the ball every now and then…

41 yds rushing on the 1st drive. 9 the rest of the 1st half

Why in the world did the Panthers decide to throw the ball? The Cardinals cannot stop the run, the Panthers are one the best running teams so run the ball and let the clock tick. Terrible game plan. Delhomme is not good in big games.
