Panthers vs. Chargers Game Day Open Thread
Carolina Panthers at San Diego Chargers, Sep 7, 2008 4:15 PM EDT
For those of you in the CSR community looking for a little comraderie during the game or if your just sitting at home by yourself watching the game feel free to use this open thread to discuss the Panthers opening match-up with AFC powerhouse San Diego Chargers.
Here's a nice preview video from NFL.com.
Are you ready for some football?
Of course you are. Let me hear from you!
BTW, I copied over a decent Q&A from Scout.com on this game that you can read under the fold.
Our Scout.com experts, Brad Thomas of PantherInsider.com and Michael Lombardo of SDBoltReport.com, analyze Sunday's game between the Panthers and Chargers at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego. Part two finishes the series with six questions from Michael to Brad. Michael Lombardo: What will the Panthers do to replace Steve Smith’s presence in the passing game? Which players will be asked to step up? ML: How will the Panthers divvy up carries between 2006 first-round pick DeAngelo Williams and 2008 first-rounder Jonathan Stewart? How much will Carolina lean on its re-shaped rushing attack? BT: As usual, head coach John Fox hasn't divulged that information. In the third preseasong game against the Washington Redskins, Stewart and Williams alternated series. It's possible the Panthers use that approach again, with Stewart getting the short-yardage carries. The running game has been a focus of the Panthers' retooling in the offseason. The team traded to acquire an extra first round pick in this past draft in order to select OT Jeff Otah. they cut OG Mike Wahle and C Justin Hartwig in the offseason and brought in bigger players to replace them, as the Panthers shifted from a lighter, quicker line to a bigger, more powerful line. The team hopes that Jonathan Stewart can serve in a similar role that Stephen Davis filled in 2003, when the Panthers made it all the way to the Super Bowl. BT: The Panthers couldn't face a better test in week one than the Chargers -- a team that has a great defense and a great running game. Delhomme didn't have a stellar preseason, but showed he has velocity on his passes and can take a hit. I expect him to be rusty and attempt a few throws that he *thinks* he can make that may be picked-off because of it. If the Panthers can establish their running game, this will be less of a factor, but if they can't, Delhomme's rustiness and the absence of Smith may snowball. BT: Last season certainly was an aberration. Allegedly, Peppers was undergoing treatment for an illness that required an aggressive treatment of medicines that sapped his energy and stamina. The team, nor Peppers, will comment on the situation. This preseason, Peppers has looked very good and appears to be back to his All-Pro form. He's switched from left defensive end to the right, which he feels is his natural position. Add that this is a contract year for Peppers, and he should post double-digit sacks again in 2008. ML: How will the Panthers cover Antonio Gates? Will they use a linebacker or a defensive back? Or will they roll zone coverage his way? Do you believe they will wait and see how he moves on his injured toe before double-teaming him? BT: Tight ends have historically given the John Fox-led Carolina Panthers fits defensively. I think they'll likely employ a zone coverage with a safety over top to try to limit his effectiveness. ML: The Panthers recently signed kick returner Mark Jones, who spent his training camp in San Diego. Will he handle both kick and punt returns during the season opener? Do you think the Panthers coaches are in his ear asking about the Chargers’ game plan for Sept. 7? BT: Jones will serve as the punt and kick returner on Sunday. The media in Charlotte asked Jones if he had been asked to divulge any secrets, and he said no, that he was focusing on learning the Panthers' system. I think they probably have picked his brain about formations and tendencies -- why wouldn't they? It's a long plane ride to San Diego from Charlotte.

The 2nd drive definitely looks better than the first.

Going for it...
Even though that was incomplete to Hoov, I have to say I’m happy they went for it there. Can you say Peppers safety? It seems like we’re trying to win, not trying not to lose.

4th and Goal
Although I would have liked to see them let J Stew try to punch it in.

I agree
liked the call to go for it, but would’ve liked to see how our power run offensive would have done. Although, we can always 2nd guess the play after the fact. If we made it it would have been the best call.

Agreed.
I was hoping they run it when I saw “4th & goal at the 1” on gameday (stupid FOX put DAL/CLE on TV in Utah).
The Utah Jazz. The Jazz... duh.
The best NBA team in Utah... no doubts about it!
Playing For Pride. Pirates, Utes, Panthers, and more...
Because, in the end, only one team can "win it all".

Otah injured?
Don’t have the game on TV, just saw it pop up on gamecenter

I don't have it on TV either...
Hopefully nothing too serious. Anybody know anything?

I missed it too
My son had to go potty so I missed it, but they just took him to the locker room.
by LittleKing on Sep 7, 2008 4:56 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
i dont either but here's what panthers.com says
Jeff Otah is down on the ground after Williams’ 7-yard run … He walks off the field with no assistance and under his own power.
by JStew28 on Sep 7, 2008 4:56 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Anyone see it though?
Thinking worst case scenario, he could have dislocated his shoulder and still obviously left on his own power. Hopefully it’s a minor injury, but it could also just mean he didn’t hurt his legs…
by mariners124m on Sep 7, 2008 5:04 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Hopefully they're just being cautious with him...
But come on, Bridges! Illegal formation bringing back the 14 yard completion to Hacket.. lame.

Jeff Otah
Sounds like a knee sprain. Announcers mentioned how much pain Otah appeared to be in while the crew positioned a knee brace on him. yikes

I think the team might finally
have a TE!
The Utah Jazz. The Jazz... duh.
The best NBA team in Utah... no doubts about it!
Playing For Pride. Pirates, Utes, Panthers, and more...
Because, in the end, only one team can "win it all".

Im an old man now
I think I just aged about 10 years watching that game. The cardiac ward at the hospital is probably over crowded tonight.

SI preview ratings
I can’t help thinking of the Sports Illustrated preview issue. I usually take these kind of things with a grain of salt, but I remember how irritated I was to see that the Carolina tight ends were rated a “D” I can’t swear I might not have missed a team, but I didn’t see a lower rating for tight ends on any other team in the league. Knowing that they had Jeff King, who is a very good receiver, and Dante Rosario, who anyone with eyes can see has the potential to be one of the best in the league, I thought it was absolutely ridiculous. Here’s hoping Rosario and King prove them wrong every week this season.

People know who Rosario is now
He’s a going to be a weapon week in and week out that will help keep defenses from focusing on Smitty too much. Just a huge contribution.
