Panthers vs. Chargers Game Day Open Thread
Carolina Panthers at San Diego Chargers, Sep 7, 2008 4:15 PM EDT
For those of you in the CSR community looking for a little comraderie during the game or if your just sitting at home by yourself watching the game feel free to use this open thread to discuss the Panthers opening match-up with AFC powerhouse San Diego Chargers.
Here's a nice preview video from NFL.com.
Are you ready for some football?
Of course you are. Let me hear from you!
BTW, I copied over a decent Q&A from Scout.com on this game that you can read under the fold.
Our Scout.com experts, Brad Thomas of PantherInsider.com and Michael Lombardo of SDBoltReport.com, analyze Sunday's game between the Panthers and Chargers at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego. Part two finishes the series with six questions from Michael to Brad. Michael Lombardo: What will the Panthers do to replace Steve Smith’s presence in the passing game? Which players will be asked to step up? ML: How will the Panthers divvy up carries between 2006 first-round pick DeAngelo Williams and 2008 first-rounder Jonathan Stewart? How much will Carolina lean on its re-shaped rushing attack? BT: As usual, head coach John Fox hasn't divulged that information. In the third preseasong game against the Washington Redskins, Stewart and Williams alternated series. It's possible the Panthers use that approach again, with Stewart getting the short-yardage carries. The running game has been a focus of the Panthers' retooling in the offseason. The team traded to acquire an extra first round pick in this past draft in order to select OT Jeff Otah. they cut OG Mike Wahle and C Justin Hartwig in the offseason and brought in bigger players to replace them, as the Panthers shifted from a lighter, quicker line to a bigger, more powerful line. The team hopes that Jonathan Stewart can serve in a similar role that Stephen Davis filled in 2003, when the Panthers made it all the way to the Super Bowl. BT: The Panthers couldn't face a better test in week one than the Chargers -- a team that has a great defense and a great running game. Delhomme didn't have a stellar preseason, but showed he has velocity on his passes and can take a hit. I expect him to be rusty and attempt a few throws that he *thinks* he can make that may be picked-off because of it. If the Panthers can establish their running game, this will be less of a factor, but if they can't, Delhomme's rustiness and the absence of Smith may snowball. BT: Last season certainly was an aberration. Allegedly, Peppers was undergoing treatment for an illness that required an aggressive treatment of medicines that sapped his energy and stamina. The team, nor Peppers, will comment on the situation. This preseason, Peppers has looked very good and appears to be back to his All-Pro form. He's switched from left defensive end to the right, which he feels is his natural position. Add that this is a contract year for Peppers, and he should post double-digit sacks again in 2008. ML: How will the Panthers cover Antonio Gates? Will they use a linebacker or a defensive back? Or will they roll zone coverage his way? Do you believe they will wait and see how he moves on his injured toe before double-teaming him? BT: Tight ends have historically given the John Fox-led Carolina Panthers fits defensively. I think they'll likely employ a zone coverage with a safety over top to try to limit his effectiveness. ML: The Panthers recently signed kick returner Mark Jones, who spent his training camp in San Diego. Will he handle both kick and punt returns during the season opener? Do you think the Panthers coaches are in his ear asking about the Chargers’ game plan for Sept. 7? BT: Jones will serve as the punt and kick returner on Sunday. The media in Charlotte asked Jones if he had been asked to divulge any secrets, and he said no, that he was focusing on learning the Panthers' system. I think they probably have picked his brain about formations and tendencies -- why wouldn't they? It's a long plane ride to San Diego from Charlotte.

Going for it...
Even though that was incomplete to Hoov, I have to say I’m happy they went for it there. Can you say Peppers safety? It seems like we’re trying to win, not trying not to lose.
4th and Goal
Although I would have liked to see them let J Stew try to punch it in.
I agree
liked the call to go for it, but would’ve liked to see how our power run offensive would have done. Although, we can always 2nd guess the play after the fact. If we made it it would have been the best call.
Agreed.
I was hoping they run it when I saw “4th & goal at the 1” on gameday (stupid FOX put DAL/CLE on TV in Utah).
The Utah Jazz. The Jazz... duh.
The best NBA team in Utah... no doubts about it!
Playing For Pride. Pirates, Utes, Panthers, and more...
Because, in the end, only one team can "win it all".
Otah injured?
Don’t have the game on TV, just saw it pop up on gamecenter
who’s watching, what happened?
by mariners124m on Sep 7, 2008 4:50 PM EDT reply actions
I don't have it on TV either...
Hopefully nothing too serious. Anybody know anything?
i dont either but here's what panthers.com says
Jeff Otah is down on the ground after Williams’ 7-yard run … He walks off the field with no assistance and under his own power.
Anyone see it though?
Thinking worst case scenario, he could have dislocated his shoulder and still obviously left on his own power. Hopefully it’s a minor injury, but it could also just mean he didn’t hurt his legs…
by mariners124m on Sep 7, 2008 5:04 PM EDT up reply actions
Hopefully they're just being cautious with him...
But come on, Bridges! Illegal formation bringing back the 14 yard completion to Hacket.. lame.
Jeff Otah
Sounds like a knee sprain. Announcers mentioned how much pain Otah appeared to be in while the crew positioned a knee brace on him. yikes
Otah
Apparently he’s being listed as questionable to return.
Chargers TD
Who was covering Chambers on that TD?
Just saw the replay
He was left wide open downfield, easy play

KR
Nice return by Stewart there, we’re definitely doing much better with the return game on both ends.
Gotta love...
how we’re running the ball all over them… now if we could just punch it in the end zone, shoulda ran on 4th and 1…
Definitely
Williams is showing up LT so far.
If we can run like this all season
We’ll be unstoppable once we get smith back… If teams stuff the box… hello deep passes
by mariners124m on Sep 7, 2008 5:17 PM EDT up reply actions
How about Jarrett?
That rookie season seems like a long time ago…
Cmon red zone offense
please score this time..
by mariners124m on Sep 7, 2008 5:18 PM EDT reply actions
This is the best the offense has been in ages...
Even without Smith, they are really REALLY moving the rock! I smell something… could it be the playoffs?
Yeah nice to see the offense clicking
Esp the running game… it was frustrating to see us trying to rely on it so much when it was so ineffective
by mariners124m on Sep 7, 2008 5:19 PM EDT up reply actions
Penalties, penalties, penalties...
This is unfortunate.
Ughhhh
At least we’ve been driving deep all game
over 200 yards already… not bad
by mariners124m on Sep 7, 2008 5:22 PM EDT up reply actions
Ouch
Our offense looks amazing but these penalties are getting annoying….we need Otah back out there to get our stride back
We do but
the last thing we want is him to get rushed back, and then hurt himself again and we lose him for extended time
by mariners124m on Sep 7, 2008 5:24 PM EDT up reply actions
Maybe...
They’ll get over these jitters. All these stupid mistakes in the red zone… seems like they just need to settle down and focus.
Definitely.
With the red zone offense the way it’s looking, special teams are going to keep us in this one until somebody figures out how to get a TD.
That's the ticket!
The D is really looking good, that TD aside.
And opening those holes!
Williams again for 11! What a game for D-Will!
NFC South
Anyone watch Turner and Norwood today for Atlanta? There’s a duo to worry about….however the Lions D does suck…
I watch some
I saw part of the came. They definitely had a strong showing, but I do wonder how much was the lions D. However, some confidence can go a long way. Something to keep an eye on.
If we're containing LT like we are...
Then I’m not that worried about Turner. Knock on wood.
Rosario
Did you see him hurdle over the tackler…
Looks like a good fantasy TE if still available in your league… at least until steve smith gets back.
Definitely...
Spectacular day for him so far.
Sputtered again in the Red Zone...
Fox needs to do something about this.
Throw peppers back in at TE
Hey it almost worked once!

Sack
Delhomme gets sacked and we get blocked in the endzone…sigh….at least we made the Chargers switch to a 4-3
That's what Lloyd's here for...
And he’s doing a good job of it.
Carolina on top at the half!
I’m excited to hear the talking heads start going on about how unexpected it is, and how surprisingly explosive the Carolina O appears to be.
Now if we could only stop those penalties
This game could easily be 24-7 if we could squeeze out the last 10 yards
by mariners124m on Sep 7, 2008 5:42 PM EDT reply actions
There's always next half.
That Chargers D is going to get tired if we keep on like this.
5.9 ypc.. over 100 rushing yards
At the half… I’m lovin this
by mariners124m on Sep 7, 2008 5:45 PM EDT reply actions
lets not get cocky
but things are coming along swimmingly…besides Godfrey giving up that touchdown….I still have faith in him though…
It's not cocky
Even if we lose, this won’t have been an “easy” win by any stretch
by mariners124m on Sep 7, 2008 5:51 PM EDT up reply actions
Can't be too hard on Godfrey.
It’s his first real game, and against the Chargers no less. It’d be nice to see the kid go out and be perfect, but I must say, for a rookie 3rd rounder, I’m looking forward to his career with the Panthers.
And that's three and out...
Let’s see that rushing attack!
I didn't see
him touch the ball, but if he did that was STUPID!!!
Fire Crossman
Lloyd is gonna hide our coverage so we can’t see how horrible a coach he is, that’s the only chance he has of keeping his job
Anybody with the game on TV...
What’s the blitzing looking like? How often?
blitzing
We sacked PR w/ a weakside blitz (lb and DB)… have still been dropping peppers into coverage (he’s been invisible again…)
I don’t know how many times we have blitzed though…
we have been faking it a lot, running guys forwards and back
See Carolina
That is how you convert 4th downs
by mariners124m on Sep 7, 2008 6:07 PM EDT reply actions
That was Wharton
He went back in, then went back out.
How have we been doing on our pass rush
Only one sack, but have we hurried/knocked down Rivers much?
by mariners124m on Sep 7, 2008 6:10 PM EDT reply actions
Hurried/knocked
Not sure on the numbers but our LBs always seem to get a hand on him…..Brayton was a good choice for Peppers old position
Our D is doing very well
Pushed it only to a field goal….this isn’t bad, but its time for a TD. Both D will get tired in the 4th under that sun.
Yuck
Did he return kickoffs in college though? or is this his first real kickoff experience
by mariners124m on Sep 7, 2008 6:15 PM EDT up reply actions
TD time
Seriously. Time to get serious. Great job by the D so far, now the offense needs to step it up.
Personally
I’ll take a TD anytime… not just now
by mariners124m on Sep 7, 2008 6:15 PM EDT up reply actions
Seriously.
I thought this was a John Fox team. They’re trying to spread the D, I guess. Keep them chasing receivers and then send Stewart to bowl over them.
About time someone else fucked up
As for the running/throwing balance
I’m not going to argue the ratio seeing as we’ve been keeping them off balance enough to be able to run right through the spread D
by mariners124m on Sep 7, 2008 6:18 PM EDT up reply actions
Nice play though
What do you guys think? Is it a TD? I couldn’t see
play reversed
whose paying these zebras…must be LT for another rushing record that he doesnt deserve
TOUCHDOWN!
Bet the Bears are missing Chris Harris right about now!
SD Holding Penalty
That’s the kind of penalty I like to see!
4th Quarter...
Here we go… let’s hope this isn’t another Panthers team that’s allergic to the 4th quarter.
I must say
The D has been very impressive overall. There’s another stop!
Let's just hope
that they can take advantage of it.
Kasey is money
Whoever has him on their fantasy team is having a great day right now
by mariners124m on Sep 7, 2008 6:41 PM EDT reply actions
That'd be me!
15 points from Kasay so far for me. I’m as happy with him as Fox is, I reckon.
Alright... 10 minutes to go!
So close, and yet so far!
Giving up 25 yard completions
ain’t what we need.
By something
We meant more than another half tackle… how about a sack or something?
by mariners124m on Sep 7, 2008 6:48 PM EDT up reply actions
Touchdown SD :(
Time to bleed that clock! Thank God for Chris Harris.
How about the offense scores a TD now
Plz guys

And Cason is a product of my college
I’ve had classes with this guy….guess we are no longer friends lol
Lets hold them to a FG here come on
Biggest play of the game right here
by mariners124m on Sep 7, 2008 7:02 PM EDT reply actions
How about an INT in the end zone taken back for a TD?
That’d be nice.
Lets be realistic
And just settle for the fact Jake has gonna have to show his old 4th quarter magic
by mariners124m on Sep 7, 2008 7:03 PM EDT up reply actions
What a catch by Rosario!
Jake really threaded the needle… amazing.
who gets game ball
delhomme final drive. rosario huge game. harris’s fumble. gambles fumble recovery for touchdown
I think the team might finally
have a TE!
The Utah Jazz. The Jazz... duh.
The best NBA team in Utah... no doubts about it!
Playing For Pride. Pirates, Utes, Panthers, and more...
Because, in the end, only one team can "win it all".
Im an old man now
I think I just aged about 10 years watching that game. The cardiac ward at the hospital is probably over crowded tonight.

SI preview ratings
I can’t help thinking of the Sports Illustrated preview issue. I usually take these kind of things with a grain of salt, but I remember how irritated I was to see that the Carolina tight ends were rated a “D” I can’t swear I might not have missed a team, but I didn’t see a lower rating for tight ends on any other team in the league. Knowing that they had Jeff King, who is a very good receiver, and Dante Rosario, who anyone with eyes can see has the potential to be one of the best in the league, I thought it was absolutely ridiculous. Here’s hoping Rosario and King prove them wrong every week this season.
People know who Rosario is now
He’s a going to be a weapon week in and week out that will help keep defenses from focusing on Smitty too much. Just a huge contribution.
