Panthers vs. Vikings Game Day Open Thread

Carolina Panthers at Minnesota Vikings, Sep 21, 2008 1:00 PM EDT

Welcome to the Panthers vs. Vikings game day open thread. Here are some things I've been thinking about:

  • With five false start penalties last week it won't get any easier inside the Metrodome; its one of the loudest venues in all of sports. I expect the Vikings to take advantage of that as always.
  • Even if RB Adrian Peterson doesn't play his back-up Chester Taylor is no slouch. The Vikings have a good offensive line that will open holes regardless of who gets the rock.
  • I bet the Panthers try to go deep to WR Steve Smith on their very first offensive play. That would make sure the secondary gets worried about him from the start.
  • I think its about time for RB Jonathan Stewart to break off a nice kick off return . It's only a matter of time
  • Back-up LG Geoff Hangartner seems to be filling in well for the injured Travelle Wharton. Wharton should be back some but I see no reason for him to rush it
  • CB Chris Gamble has come close to several interceptions this season but still has yet to get his first. New Vikings starter at QB Gus Frerotte offers an opportunity to turn that around
  • The Vikings are good against the run. I bet Jake wins this one through the air.

Go Panthers.

============

Adrian Peterson Injury Update:

No surprise to me but AP is going to play:

NFL.com senior writer Steve Wyche reports that Vikings Pro Bowl RB Adrian Peterson (hamstring) will play today against the Panthers.

While Peterson is active, the Vikings deactivated WR Sidney Rice for the game. Rice sprained his right posterior cruciate ligament last Sunday against the Colts. Here is the full list of the Vikings-Panthers inactives.

I knew he would play. The run defense better bring their A Game.

Vikings WR Sidney Rice is Out

Darn, I was looking forward to seeing the local kid gone big time. Rice was a star for the Gamecocks. I was surprised to see him leave early but he going to be good.

Typical

Watching NFL network this week and hearing the commentators talk about this game, you would think Carolina doesn’t have an offense. Everyone is talking about AP and if we can stop him and I agree he is a big factor. Even if he doesn’t play a lot Taylor is not slouch. But for crying out loud, the Panthers had weapons on offense and I think we will win because of our offense and not because of our D (does that make since).

Prediction: Carolina 24, Vikings 10

by southtunnel on Sep 21, 2008 4:00 PM EDT reply actions

True

I’m not thinking that this is somehow indicative of huge weaknesses on this team. The Vikings were considered playoff contenders for a reason. Their D is definitely the best we’re going to see. The Panthers definitely have played better, but I think this loss is more attributable to the Vikings than the Panthers. We just flat out got beat.

by MrEd12345 on Sep 21, 2008 4:02 PM EDT reply actions

I dont agree with this at all

the vikings are not the better team….I will blame this on winner exhaustion…we just played 2 possible playoff teams and maintained on D for most of them game…..our offense looked like crap today. That timeout before the blocked field goal killed our morale…..Not to mention our O-line hasn’t clicked yet…

You just wait…..once the penalties stop, and Stewart becomes our featured back….watchout NFC because we want that championship and another chance at a Superbowl.

by SCrebel90 on Sep 21, 2008 4:07 PM EDT up reply actions

2005???

I agree. Our offense has yet to play a full game. Is Steve Smith still getting double covered? If not, then where did he go in the 2nd half? If so, then where was Hackett and Muhammad? And what happened to Rosario? This kind of reminded me of 2005, when the Bear’s defense dominated us… fortunately we were able to come back and torch them in the playoffs. But I will have major concerns until I see us play 4 quarters of offense. Now that we will be going up against some weaker defenses, we better start putting some points on the board.

on behalf of tha dirty south: soul food, carolina blue, southern hospitality, and tha queen city

by southtunnel on Sep 21, 2008 4:49 PM EDT up reply actions

What a disappointment

The only thing that will make me feel a little better is a loss for the steelers and the cowboys. BTW we are tied with Atlanta and Tampa for the NFC south. Lets get ready for the dirty birds. Gotta win that one.

by Davejinxer on Sep 21, 2008 5:15 PM EDT reply actions

New Orleans is down by 2 scores in the 3rd quarter

At least it looks like we won’t be in a 4 way tie for the NFC South.

Still sucks. I thought if we won today, the next two games would be cake. And then we would be looking at 5-0. Now I am not even completely sure we can outscore Atlanta.
