Steve Smith Trade Rumors are Swirling…but Don’t Buy into It
I can’t for the life of me imagine why the Panthers would trade Steve Smith for this one incident. Yes, he had a similar issue…6 years ago! And his ego can rub people the wrong way for sure. The problem with these rumors is that Steve Smith is an integral part of the Panther offense, an offense that HC John Fox and GM Marty Hurney are banking their jobs on. That’s why there is no way the Panthers will trade him, even if it is but who else…the Cowboys calling on the line. I’ve often joked with the SBN Cowboys blogger Dave Halprin that anytime a star player gets in trouble the immediate rumor is that Jerry Jones is interested. There is always some rumor floating around Cowboy land.
Here’s what ESPN Cowboy lover Matt Mosley has to say about it:
There have been rumblings out of Panthers camp that club officials are fed up with Smith's actions (not just the latest incident) and are at least considering the idea of dealing him to another team.
The idea of trading one of the best receivers in football seems far-fetched, but Smith has become a divisive force on the team. One Panthers source said that several defensive backs were walking around after the recent incident saying that if management didn't discipline Smith, they would. This isn't exactly the best way to begin a season.
All that to say that I know an owner in the NFC East who has spent the last four months coveting another star wide receiver. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones struckout with Chad Johnson, the Lions' Roy Williams and Anquan Boldin, but behind closed doors, he's still pining away for someone to play opposite Terrell Owens.
I'm sure the Cowboys would love to have Smith but keep dreaming 'Boys! Sending Smith to the Cowboys would essentially hand the NFC crown to the 'Boys in a season the Panthers hope to get there themselves.
If you read this blog last season you know I’m not crazy about Pat Yasinkas’ writing but there no denying he does have access to the Panther organization grape vine. He’s also not one to speculate too much so a rumor like this may have some meat to it. In the end I still can’t see the Panthers trading him unless this incident becomes a big divisive issue that the team can’t get over. So far it looks like they are doing and saying the right things to prevent that from happening.
So what might the Panthers request from the Cowboys for Smith? A first round pick for sure. Another receiver like Patrick Crayton would make sense too. And maybe one more late round pick to sweeten the pot. Still not enough for a Top 5 receiver in my book. Anyone out there think there’s any truth to this rumor?

The only way Smith gets traded is if...
There is not ifs. He will not be traded jsut because of fighting a guy in camp that has a rep of being mouthy. If it was a 3rd or 4th WR then maybe but you dont trade away one of the top 5 WR in the NFL over what happened. The only time you start to think about it is if Smith just starts dealing with things by hitting people in the face and that is unlikely.

Trading him
would be totally stupid.
And if it’s to the Cowboys… F* the Panthers.
I’m rooting for an AFC team.
The Utah Jazz. The Jazz... duh.
The best NBA team in Utah... no doubts about it!
Playing For Pride. Pirates, Utes, Panthers, and more...
Because, in the end, only one team can "win it all".

Smitty May Want To Go
The only way I see the Panthers trading Smith is if he’s the one that wants to go, and by the way a lot of fans are talking so much trash on him in forums and the Observer blogs, I could possibly see this happening. It would be a good move for Smith and Dallas. Dallas would have the weapons to compete with any team out there, and Smith would get a fresh start with welcoming fans and would most likely get a SB ring to add to his resume, eventually. It would be a bad move for the Panthers, they tried for years to replace Moose and couldn’t, how would then ever replace Smith. A dallas 1st round pick will almost be like a 2nd round pick, not nearly high enough to land a WR like Smith. I don’t understand though, about the article stating the team is fed up with Smiths actions (not just the latest incident). This latest incident has been the only thing negative Smith has done in years, so this don’t make sense. What team in their right mind would chase a top WR, who always gives it his all on the field, for some whining DBs whose play has been up and down for the last couple of years. Not one pro bowl between them all. Gamble won’t even be here next season because his contract is up and he thinks he’s going to get paid like Hall and Asante, like a pro bowl CB even though he has never made it. Marshall’s agent also mentioned the same thing about what his client is going to get on the open market, and Ken Lucas hasn’t had a really good season since his first one with the Panthers in 2005. So why would they let the cries of these guys force them to get rid of Smith. Don’t make sense unless Smith wants to go, which maybe the real case.

I don't think he wants to leave
Smitty won’t give a crap about the media. As long as Fox & Hurney still show him some respect he’ll be fine. I maintain he loves to feel like ‘the world is against him’. It fires him up.

not concerned
First of all, Smith won’t get traded because if we wanted to trade him, teams don’t have enough to offer. So he’ll miss two games. Smith has all preseason to get reps and that means we get two games with Moose, Hackett and possibly Jarrett as the top 3. Let’s see which one shines. The last time we went the first two games without Smitty, we lost them both and finished 8-8 (2006). We can still win the first two games this year, though, as our entire team has improved. I still expect nothing less than a Superbowl title, and we can expect Smith to have a monster season as he plays with a chip on his shoulder after all the trash people talk about him, as if they forgot his 26 catches in two games against the Bears in 2005 (the last being the NFC Divisional playoff victory).

0-2 in 2006 doesn't bode well
I agree though that the 2008 Panthers are better bunch than ‘06. I expect a monster season from Smitty as well.
Good to hear from Charlson, did you go over seas again?

across the water
Hey man,
I have been permanently reassigned to Naples, Italy. I will be here for years, and I’m glad about it. I left the states at the end of July. No matter where I go, though, remember that the Panthers are going 13-3 and winning it all this year. My optimism beats the miles like Smitty beats down DBs (no matter what team they play for).

Hope you like soccer!
Defending World Cup champs, those Italians. Wow, Naples for years huh? Sounds like an adventure. We’ll do our best to keep you updated on the Panthers. Will you be able to get the games?

hell will freeze over before the panthers trade smith for this incident
the panthers would trade lucas for doing whatever he did to set smith off and even if he didn’t do anything and smith just punched they would still trade lucas over smith and the chancede of trading lucas is still no chance.
