Panthers vs. Eagles Game Day Open Thread
Carolina Panthers at Philadelphia Eagles, Aug 14, 2008 8:00 PM EDT
The Panthers preseason continues with a Thursday night match-up with the Eagles. The Eagles game should feature a few faces that haven't seen much action so far like Jonathan Stewart, Jon Beason and Jake Delhomme. On the other hand a few big names will not play: Steve Smith, DJ Hackett.
You may recall the Panthers played the Eagles in the preseason last year and the outcome was quite disturbing as it portended the season to come:
But a week later in Philadelphia, the progress was thwarted. Seven possessions for the first team yielded as many three-and-outs as points-- three apiece. Two turnovers-- one of which was an interception returned 40 yards for a touchdown by Eagles cornerback Lito Sheppard-- sealed the verdict of what would be a 27-10 draft.
"We laid an egg," Delhomme said.
"We played awful. So we have to go back to work. We have an extremely short week and go against a solid, very good football team."
Let's hope we get a better performance this time.
Let me hear from you if you're out there. What aspect of this game do you think it is important for the Panthers to perform well?
Also, I'm hoping to be able to blog this one during the game but just like some other decisions, its a game time decision.

The running Game
We still need to see if the offensive line is doing well against better competition. We need to see if the running game can be sustained. Its not possible (well it is but you have to be creative) to run the nickel against a really good running team. A good running game opens up the play action. A good running game means the safetys start creeping up which gives the longer passing game a better chance.
Agreed.
With my runners up being pass protection / pass rush.
Our O-line has morphed into a a big-n-thick front, so how we do against speed guys will be interesting.
On D, I want to see the DEs turn the heat up, and see if we can get enough pressure without blitzing.

I was not impressed
The offensive line didn’t look good. The secondary seemed weak. There also doesn’t seem to be any depth behind the offensive line. Moore was getting pressured all the time. Dumping the ball into flats just reminded me of last year. They’ll get it together but this didn’t look good.
My thoughts
-Not sure about the secondary, but agree with Parmenides on the O-line (& it’s depth).
-Moore didn’t look good… it could’ve been because of the pressure though.
-D-Will had one really nice run when he started in and cut it out, breaking a couple of tackles.
-Running Stewie outside doesn’t seem to work too well.
-The front 4 generated no rush at all… even with Peppers on a guy that’s not a starting LT.
-The offense in general (first & second string) just looked bad.
-Delhomme didn’t look comfortable, and his passes were off.
-The kick/punt returns really don’t seem to have improved much from last year. Carter looks hesitant on the punts.
I know the team was without Smith & Hackett and all, but the offense really worries me right now.
The Utah Jazz. The Jazz... duh.
The best NBA team in Utah... no doubts about it!
Playing For Pride. Pirates, Utes, Panthers, and more...
Because, in the end, only one team can "win it all".
