Panthers Outlast the Colts in Preseason Game 1 23-20

Note: I wrote this right after the game Saturday night but for various reasons I'm just getting it up now (the post that is). My apologies for the delay for those who didn't get to watch the game.

If the Colts and Panthers should happen to meet in the Super Bowl in January you won’t be able to draw much from this game. Too many stars sat the game out, like the Colts QB Peyton Manning and Panthers MLB Jon Beason. At the same time I saw a lot in the first quarter, enough to make me giggle like a kid in anticipation of the coming season.

The defense came out like a swarm of bees on Colts QB Jim Sorgi, lead by none other than the re-energized Julius Peppers. Peppers blew past Colts T Tony Ugoh for the sack and forced fumble. He provided pressure on the next series when DT Gary Gibson deflected a pass intercepted by Adam Seward. Nice play by all parties and it resulted in two quick TD’s by the offense.

DeAngelo Williams and the Panthers offensive line gashed the Colts first team defense for two quick TD’s. D-Will looked fantastic with quick cuts followed by bursts of speed. I can’t be more excited about how our offensive line looked. On the second TD went off the right side as RT Jeff Otah pushed his guy half-way across the field he was so out of the play.

The only negative I can even mention (before the 3rd stringers got on the field) was Colts QB Jared Lorenzen completed some passes across the field. The Panthers had trouble covering the TE, a carryover from last season. Both Dallas Clark and the rookie Tamme (2 TD’s) made significant catches.

Here are some players that I thought helped themselves:

·         RB Decori Birmingham ran the ball well in the 4th quarter, showing a good combination of quick cuts and power running. He may have pulled even with RB LaBrandon Toefield

·         WR Dwayne Jarrett made several nice catches in the middle of the field. He took some shots, made some blocks in the running game and showed some toughness. He looks ready to play the #3 WR slot

·         WR’s Jason Carter, Travis Taylor and Chris Hannon all had nice plays they can smile about in the film room

·         DE Hilee Taylor flashed his speed on a QB hurry and also helped stuff a 4th and 1 in the fourth quarter

·         CB CJ Wilson defended a couple passes and seemed to be glued to his man during man-coverage

·         LB Adam Seward played well in place of Jon Beason, dropping a running play for  a loss and getting the INT

·         RG Keydrick Vincent played well in tandem with Jeff Otah and should continue to line up with the first team. The whole line dominated the Colts light DL on the first three drives

·         Rhys Lloyd kicked at least three balls out of the end zone. One that was returned went for 35 yards. Fox may have no choice but use a roster spot on the extra kicker

·         QB Lester Ricard threw the ball pretty well, hitting a couple nice timing patterns. I’d say he played as well as Brett Basanez if not better

·         Former Gamecock DE Jasper Brinkley had a nice sack

Of course the Panthers were far short of perfect. Here are a few players who may have hurt themselves to some degree:

·         S Nate Salley was late getting in on a punt and caused a delay of game penalty

·         DE Stanley McClover had two offside penalties but did otherwise play well

·         RB Troy Fleming dropped an easy pass that hit his hands and then fumbled the ball a couple plays later. Fleming may not make the first cut down

Panthers Quarterback Play

Jake only threw the ball once as the Panthers mainly ran the ball in the first two series.  Matt Moore played well the rest of the quarter as he solidly entrenched himself as #2 QB. Basanez played ok but not well enough to offset the play of 4th stringer Lester Ricard.

Injury Report

The only injury to a Panther player discussed during the game was to WR Dwayne Jarrett, who left late in the game with a bruised right knee. He was seen icing it later but it didn’t appear serious at all

In the “Get It Out Now in the Preseason” bracket:

·         K John Kasay missed a 51 yard FG that would have won the game early in OT

·         Long snapper Jason Kyle botched the snap on 50+ yard FG try as time expired in regulation

·         A nice punt return by Jason Carter was negated by the dreaded block-in-the-back penalty on WR Thompson

Colts Player of the Game

I thought Colts Player of the Game QB Jared Lorenzen played well, impressing me with his precise passes and touch on the ball. If the Colts should for some reason cut him I would not be unhappy if the Panthers picked him up. Can you believe he weighs 300 lbs and can still run the ball if needed? He’s like Jerome Bettis at QB (I kid).

Overall I saw nothing that gives me pause about my lofty expectations for the Panthers this season. If you gage these games by the first quarter than the Panthers should be smiling. The running game looked great, the pass rush was active and the Panthers for the most part executed their game plan. Of course Peyton Manning may have produced a different outcome if he had played that’s neither here nor there. The point is that overall the Panthers played well and took the first step towards a successful season.

Carolina's o-line

Sup Jaxon! The Colts radio announcers were saying the Panthers o-line consisted of 1 center and 4 tackles. Was that true?

Almost.

One center, a right guard, and three tackles. We slid last year’s left tackle into left guard, moved last year’s right tackle over to the left side, and drafted our new right tackle. Musical linemen, we call it. The whole point was to get bigger and stronger at every spot on the line, which we pretty much did. No more of this fancy technique crap: Hit them, drive them backwards.

What about pass protection?

Eventually, you have to throw. And if you don’t have someone to deal with the speed rushers…

Ah, that's easy...

We’ve got Jordan Gross, our most agile lineman, at LT now. He goes up against Peppers every day in practice, and has for four years. He’s able to handle the speed rush and the bull rush and spin moves and all of it equally well. Freeney? No idea how Gross would stand up to him, but Freeney’s the best pure speed rusher in the game, and he makes the best tackles look silly one or two plays per game. Of course, you could always just run right at him, and 99 times out of 50, he’ll run himself out of the play.

Good point

We’re hoping we don’t have to sacrifice pass protection for a running game. We didn’t really get a look at pass protection against the Colts before the starters were pulled. Maybe Thursday night we will see.

Good to hear from you Blue.

Good write-up, Jax!

I agree with basically everything you said.

Ricard is on par with Basenez right now, as far as I can tell, but has much better physical tools and a big-time arm. He does struggle with accuracy, though, and that’s a tough problem to fix. I’m not sold on keeping a 3rd QB. Right now, if you had to make a choice between carrying a 3rd QB or a 2nd kicker, which would it be?

One person I think will stand out in film study will be Charles Johnson. He got excellent pressure, and had his hands on the QB every time Peppers did, though Peppers was much more forceful about it.

All in all, a good outing. Hard to believe we were able to do as well as we did with roughly 1/2 the starting defense out, including 3/4 of our starting secondary (and the one “starter” is a rookie). Seward’s playing like he wants to keep his job, and he looks to have earned it. It looks to me like Conner’s going to have to fight to make the team, since Anderson had a decent game and they’re both aiming for that last LB spot.

At this point, the 2nd kicker

- I’d slide Basanez on the PS and hope no one grabs him.

- Johnson did have a good game, I agree. He will be one to watch against the Eagles.

- Seward looked real good, but I can’t see the Panthers cutting Conner, no way. I think they both make the team, Anderson gets cut

Special teams coaching???

Does anyone besides me think we need a new special teams coach? Seems like since the superbowl season, things have gone rapidly down hill every year.

by chetwest on Aug 11, 2008 4:11 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yes, please god yes

That’s not just a “seems like”, that’s a complete reality. Our special teams has gotten worse and worse. Our return teams are pedestrian, our coverage teams are just plain bad. Our kickers are magnificent, but that’s just one part of the whole.

I tend to think that it’s got everything to do with team depth. We were loaded with great team players, role players when Fox/Hurney took over. We had Rod Smart, Jarrod Cooper, Dante Wesley, Karl Hankton, just a bunch of smart guys who knew they weren’t starters and still wanted to go make plays. We had a special teams unit. We haven’t had that kind of depth since, and we haven’t had that level of role players. If we had four players with the intensity of Richard Marshall, I think our special teams units would be fine.

Of course, I think most of that goes on the special teams coach, and his ability to fight for players when it comes to cut-down time. And he’s not getting the players he’s got to do the things they need to do. So it just looks like an all-around failure.

BTW, one of the funniest moments in last wednesday’s practice was when Jason Carter messed up his assignment on the kickoff coverage unit right after Chris Hannon had made the same mistake. The special teams coach came running down the field yelling “Jason Carter! You and Chris Hannon are completely clueless!”

Okay, it doesn’t translate. But it was funny at the time. Seriously. Just trust me on that.

injuries!!!

the biggest problem is that 1/3 of the team is out with injuries. Even if they are minor, it looks like we will be starting the season dinges up. And Smitty is now out with a concussion! If Hackett remains his injury prone self, we could start the season with Jarrett starting at 2!!! Imagine that

great post

This is what I love! People who know football and can have good inputs about what we saw.

One guy commented that we need pass protection. We have pass protection. Last year’s line wasn’t that bad. D-Will had five yards a carry and Jake and Matt Moore had plenty of time to throw. Vinny and Carr didn’t. This year’s line is better, but the main difference is that we should have the lead in the second half and we’ll run the ball 75% of the time in the 2nd half with a good line and a good push with our 3 starting tackles and Kalil monster.

I’m not worried about the injuries for now because these guys have a month to heal. Jarrett needs to play well regardless of the current injuries because 10 games out of Hackett may be a lot to ask for. However, since I couldn’t watch the game, did anyone see anything worth mentioning from our TEs, either blocking or catching?

Freeney is overrated, and I think Hilee Taylor will get some other LB cut by next year. He’s like a faster Terrell Suggs.

Remember my earlier prediction: D-Will, 2000 all-purpose yards and 15 TDs.

u_g! How’s it going, man? Where are you stationed these days?

If JStew is hampered by his sore toe, then I think you’ve got a real shot at getting those 2000 yards and the 15 TDs. If he’s not, then a lot of those TDs will go to the man who handles short yardage, and that’s #28.

As for Freeney, I used to think he was overrated, too. People who think of him as a “great” DE are completely wrong. But you have to admit that he’s the best speed rusher in the game, with the best spin move I’ve ever seen. Sure, he’s worthless against the run. But man, there’s not a better speed rusher out there.

And I can’t envision Hilee Taylor making the team this year. He’s not going to play LB, which would only make sense if we ran a 3-4 (which we won’t do under Foxy), he’s just too big for that. But if he does the same thing McClover did, beefs up but retains his speed, I could see him taking McClover’s roster spot. That’s about the only way I can see he makes the team next year. But you’re right, he’s a beast, just too light a beast. We’ll have to see what he looks like with another 30 lbs of muscle.

Taylor might be destined for the PS

He’s a perfect candidate, someone that probably won’t draw other interest until he puts on some weight.

I also thought Gary Gibson played well. He’s one to watch on Thursday.

the thing that makes me happiest about this game

is the offensive line. that was one of the biggest question marks going into this year. by the way they played it is no longer a question. for being a brand new overhauled line i doing as well as they did going into their first real competition was amazing. a new rookie tackle wharton was moved a second year center’s first starting year, a new guard and the top guy left was gross. with this line delhomme should stay healthy and with how well williams did i cants wait to see J-Stew aka SNOOOOOP play.

wellllllll...

...technically, it’s ‘Snootie Pie’.

Let’s make sure the stadium chants include all three syllables, ‘kay?
