Can DJ’s Knee Really Hackett?

As many people are reporting, including Panthers.com staff writer Andrew Mason, Panthers WR DJ Hackett has returned to practice . Like many Panther fans I was relieved to hear this news until I read the following quote from DJ:

"It feels good. I just had some swelling in my knee, so I just take it easy when it swells up.  There's nothing hurt, nothing injured."

I’m not trying to be an alarmist, but how often does your knee swell up DJ? Though nothing is hurt or damaged, it swells up simply from running routes and cutting? I’m getting a sinking feeling about this. If you take DJ Hackett out of the Panthers WR mix I’m suddenly not feeling so good about our WR corps.

Maybe I’m reading too much into his comment, it’s certainly possible. I realize all the players are coming back from a layoff and their bodies need time to adjust. Yet that’s the reason I would think his knee would be in good shape. A knee joint isn’t something that strengthens through heavy use. I just pray this isn’t portending what will be a chronic problem throughout the coming season. In my view DJ was one of our key off-season signings and I’m counting on him to be the main threat opposite Steve Smith. If his knee is acting up already then that is not a good sign.

So, does anyone have any positive reports from OTA’s about Dwayne Jarrett? Please?

not a concern

I’m not worried about it. When we signed him, I was excited, but I never expected 16 games out of this guy. Not only that, but he’s not in the same league as Moose. Remember that Moose was drafted the same year as T.O. Here is the list of solid receivers from the 1996 draft: Keyshawn Johnson, Terry Glenn, Eddie Kennison, Marvin Harrison, Eric Moulds, Bobby Engram, Terrell Owens, Muhsin Muhammad, Amani Toomer, and Joe Horn. Keyshawn retired, but Gleen will be back this year, Kennison keeps on going, Toomer actually seemed younger last year, T.O. got a new contract and Engram is a starter in Seattle. In other words, this group is older, but not done. Moose will have his best season since his 1400 yard, 16 TD last season in Carolina. Hackett never had a chance to beat out Moose for the #2 spot, and if Hackett can’t go some games, then we’ll see if Jarrett was really worth it, or failing to match the hype like other USC players (see Leinart, Bush, L. White, Mike Williams, W. Justice – gave up 6 sacks to Osi all over McNabb, Keary Colbert, Rodney Peete, etc.) Moose has been to two Pro Bowls, and none of them include the season he caught 102 passes. It’s going to be on. Moose is just as good as when he left us, and we truly have two #1s.

I think Hackett plays 10-12 games, and Jarrett proves he’s not much better than Keary Colbert was. Next year, we’ll draft another receiver. No big deal. We’ve got Smith, Moose, Barnidge, King, Williams, Stewart, and a helluva loyal fanbase.

Hackett

I agree w/ usana_gaines .. If Hackett can start even half the games this season, it will be a miracle and a big big cushion for our WR corps .. Hopefully he’ll be there when we need him most, as in a late season push for the playoffs .. I think if Hackett can’t stay healthy, Jason Carter could be activated from the practice squad (dude has been wowing Moose and Moose isn’t easily impressed) , and we still have Ryne Robinson, the Travis Taylor enigma and the TE/FB Rosario (both showed flashes at the end of the year) .. I think Jarrett will smarten up with a little guidance from Moose, much the same way Moose smartened up Smith after the Anthony Bright scuffle early in Smith’s career… Time will tell whether Jarrett falls into the same USC black hole of overrated players , although I stay cautiously optimistic about him… Jarrett knows how to come down with the ball, I know this, he just needs to learn his effing routes already… Hopefully Moose can talk some sense into him.. Superbowl or bust for Panthers 2008 ..

I'm hoping for more than 8 games

but if that is then I guess we would be getting more than Seattle did last season.

Also, Jarrett does know how to catch the ball for sure. He has great hands. He first and foremost has to learn his routes just to get on the field. I hope Moose teaches him how to block more than anything. The Panthers pace a premium on that so if he wants to be more than a 3rd down receiver he has to learn that too.

Smitty’s clocking of Bright really turned me off of him for quite a while. I’ve forgiven him now but it took a while (becoming a Pro Bowler certainly helped I admit). He’s toned down his antics too which is good in my opinion. I don’t ever expect him to stop it all together because thats what makes Smitty -Smitty. He gets in the CB’s head with his jabber (who can forget the DeAngelo Hall meltdown?). He’s gone through a maturation process that Jarrett needs to as well. Let’s hope for a similar outcome.

WR looking good

Their is a couple more things we cant forget about. That is 1. Our running game is better this year last year which will help keep the opposing team from cheating too much into the passing game. 2. Hacket will be the third reciever, in seattle he was the second receiver. This means their will be more mismatches for him. Think how good he did as the second receiver. This receiving core this year is something to get excited about

I agree

That’s a good point JStew28, the passing game should benefit if Fox can get back even a shadow of the smash mouth running game that carried his team to the Super Bowl in 2003 .. This receiving corp is definitely better than in 2003 .. The J. Stewart / D. Williams combo should be very hard to stop with all the upgrades made on the Panther’s o-line .. Moose’s blocking upfield should open up the bigger running plays. I think this year the Stewart/Williams combo will easily break all-time single season Panther rushing and TD records… Everyone just needs to stay healthy .. knock on wood
