Research

So I decided to do a little reseacrh on our boys, a little youtubin.  I looked at some highlights of J. Stewart.  Some called him a faster Emmitt Smith.  I could see it.  He's fast and strong, but he doesn't have that burst we look for nowadays.  Emmitt didn't really have a burst either, he just got it done.  Stewart is in the same mold, but faster and stronger.  If his work ethic is similar, and his on-field vision, he can be one of the greatest.  There is a problem with this scenario, though.  It's called D-Will.  D-Will is unbelievable.  You look at his stats and you're not impressed.  I get that.  But you have to dig deeper.  Everyone on the planet said we needed offensive line help.  Our QBs got crushed and our running game was dismal.  Did you see the rookie D-Will get the ball on a direct snap on every third down against the Falcons a couple years ago, and he converted every one?  He managed to get five yards per carry with the same line that caused Foster to get 3.5.  And in 322 career touches, he only lost one fumble.  He has the burst that Stewart lacks, and his 217 pounds of muscle are more than Emmitt had as well.  His 167 touches last year were good for 892 yards, six TDs and 7 plays of at least 20 yards.  This year, he will go for over 1600 all-purpose yards and at least 10 TDs.  He and Stewart are going to punish teams so bad, play action to Smith down the sideline should be good for another 1500 yard season.  Make no mistake, we will have a dominant offense this year, and our 13 wins will be the numba one stunna of the NFL this year.

By week 8 everyone's opinion will change

You are right, with all the attention given to J-Stew we forget that we still have a great RB in D-Will who is prime to break out this season. I’m sure the Panther running game will average 100-120 yards per game though who actually gets the yardage game to game may vary. It’s going to be one helluva 1-2 punch.

One small point.

One of the funnier things about the draft is the inability of draftnics to separate a players ability when they play through an injury from that player’s ability uninjured. The assumption is that their injured performance will be their healthy performance. We saw that with Otah, when the Scout.com guy said he “looks like he’s in pain when he’s running,” which is only funny because it’s true. Oh, the irony.

When we picked JStew (and I’m not a fan of that nickname, by the by; it sounds like a Dinty Moore product), Mayock and Faulk talked about how he lacked burst. Didn’t mention the turf toe, didn’t mention that he played the entire season hurt and waited to have surgery until after he’d run at the combine. So we’re looking at a guy who we know is very fast… with turf toe. We have no idea how fast he’ll be now that he’s healthy. So I’m looking for him to finally have that burst once he gets on the field mid-way through training camp (because you know how cautious the Panthers’ training staff is). He’s going to impress a lot of people.

His nickname in college was “Snoop”, if you’d prefer that.

Early videos of Stewart would show a bit more burst speed, but one of the things he picked up this last season was patience. He would often try to force a play his Freshman and Sophomore year – and with the Power-I, you’re more flexible to do that. He ran an Option-Read offense his Junior year, where you don’t ever have a lead blocker, so he had to wait for the hole to open up.

Still, his burst speed is lower than the average fresh back, but I would hate to be the DB that needs to make the open field tackle on Snoop.

Go Duckies!

good stuff

I agree, I don’t like J-Stew, and snoop is better, but when you’re tackling him, he’s more like the Big Dogg than snoop. Either way, I saw some highlights of him and didn’t see the burst that D-Will has. However, you can watch highlights of most backs in the NFL and you won’t see a burst like D-Will’s. What we need from “snoop”, though, is not necessarily the burst as much as getting the first five yards without fumbling. He’s got the speed and power to do that. Emmitt Smith didn’t have that “burst”, neither did John Riggins, Jerome Bettis or Eddie George, but those guys were great running backs. I think we have two great RBs that will dominate the league. Imagine this: It’s the 4th quarter, we’ve got the ball on our 15 and the lead. Snoop has only 12 carries on the day, he’s fresh and a little bitter cuz he wants the ball more. He and D-Will run 14 straight times without a single pass play, run off eight minutes, and we finish with a TD. That may become a habit for us for the next six or seven years.
