Dan Conner Adds Talent to Panthers Strong LB Corps

This is the fourth installment of a series where I feature each of the Panthers recent draft picks.

I have to admit I was questioning the Panthers shortly after making Dan Conner their 4th selection, #74 in the 3rd round. Since then I’ve come a full 180 degrees. If he truly is first round talent snatched in the 3rd round then the Panthers just upgraded their LB corps to the point of being not only deep but one of the top corps in the league. Let’s take a closer look at Conner, his Penn State career and how he may impact the Panthers defense in the 2008 season.

 Here’s Dan Conner's scouting report

Blue collar. That's the word heard most often when describing Dan Conner. The Penn State Senior linebacker has been nothing short of a tackling machine since the first game of his freshman year. In fact, according to an article by Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer, Conner has failed to register at least 5 tackles in only 2 of his 45 career games. Conner even set the record for career tackles at Penn State against Purdue. The best tackler ever at a place referred to as Linebacker U, that's quite a ringing endorsement. Conner led Penn State with 145 tackles this year, helping their team to its stingy 93.8 rushing yards against average per game.

Conner will wear #44 for the Panthers. Pretty damn impressive resume I must say, which pains me a little since I don't particularly like PSU because of the Kerry Collins debacle. He's a Panther now so WTF right?

Here's his draft preview, where everyone calls him a first round lock .

Penn State linebacker Dan Connor is 6'3 231 lbs. The Nittany Lions senior had 6.5 sacks last season. Connor won the Bednarik Award for outstanding defensive player for last season. Dan was named MVP of the North Team at the 2008 Senior Bowl. The awards helped established Dan Connor as a possible first round draft pick in the 2008 NFL draft.

I saw one scout who thought he might slip into the second. When told he ended up in Carolina Conner was caught off guard given the already deep corps the Panthers boast.

"I didn't expect it," Connor told the Panthers' official web site when asked about falling out of the first two rounds. "But I'm still excited to be on the team right now and have mini-camp coming up. I don't think it's the worst thing in the world. I'm more excited about this being the start of a long NFL career.

You have to love a guy who plans to play along time. The best description of him is ‘tackling machine’. The best LB in PSU history, just amazing we got him in the 3rd round.

You  can’t find a better video of his highlights than this:

That's an impressive video. I particualrly like the way he takes on blockers and just moves them aside when its time to make the tackle.

I think Conner could end up starting the Chargers game either in the middle or on the weak side. I could see Conner in the middle and Beason at the Will and Thomas Davis at the Sam. The combinations at this point are many but rest assured the Panthers are going to start three damn good LB’s come September. I’m expecting the Panther run defense to be very formidable in 2008 and I think Dan Conner will be a big reason why.

good post

I’m excited to have Dan Connor, but don’t be surprised if he doesn’t start. I heard that Beason will be in the middle, Connor and Johnson on the outside. Or Johnson and Davis on the outside. Or Connor in the middle and Beason and Johnson on the outside, and so on and so on and so on. Either way, he’s a solid pick-up. I don’t know when Davis’ contract is going to be up, and we certainly plan for Connor to be around longer than Johnson. Either way, bring on the season. One big issue we had last season was stopping the run on 3rd and short. If we can force more punts, we’ll win more games.

I’m excited.

off topic

I don’t mean to change the subject, but someone in an earlier post said we should get Chris Johnson in the draft. We obviously didn’t draft him, and we did quite well at the draft, but you gotta look him up on YouTube. That kid is like a Reggie Bush who hits people. Or Adrian Peterson, but faster. Yeah, we should have drafted him. I said the same thing when we got Jon Beason and I wanted Greg Olsen. We see how that turned out. Beason is the man. But you gotta check out Chris Johnson on YouTube.

hey, that was me!

Yeah, I love Chris Johnson. I am absolutely baffled by people giving Tennessee bad grades for drafting him in the first round. It felt like the right place to get him (I didn’t feel good about him being there for our second round pick), and he’s a dynamic offensive playmaker. Tennessee needs those more than they need anything else, and it really doesn’t matter if that playmaker is a RB or a WR or a TE.

It also doesn’t matter to me that they’ve already invested in that position in recent drafts, because having playmakers helps, no matter where they line up. Look at San Diego, they had LT, they had The Burner, and they still drafted Darren Sproles in ‘05. And having Sproles on the Chargers has made their offense and special teams more dynamic.

The same will be said of Tennessee over the coming years. That Johnson kid is special. You don’t draft for next year, you draft for the next five years.

Speaking of Sproles, anyone wanna watch him put the stupid on new Panther Terrence Holt?

no thanks

Not interested in a kid 5’6 and lost less weight than me crushing holt in the open field. When I see kids like Johnson go to other teams, I don’t mind when I feel good about our draft. The second round hasn’t been very kind to us, but Otah, Stewart, Godfrey, Barnidge, and Connor should make me feel better about seeing Chris Johnson crush Titans opponents.

Geez, Holt Looked Bad

If he can’t tackle any better than that Foxy will have him on the bench.

bench

Yeah, Jaxon, you make a point, but he may already be on the bench behind Godfrey. Fox is a tough, defensive minded guy, and he’s not real tolerant of missed tackles. Holt is a solid back-up, though, for both safety positions, I hope.

That's not normal...

In all fairness, Sproles has done that to a lot of very good players. I frequently watched Holt play in college when I was a photographer at the college paper, and he’s pretty good. In fact, his ability to wrap up players in the open field is one of his strengths… hyper-elusive guys not withstanding. I’m not at all worried about his tackling, it’s his speed that gives me pause.

Speed, it should be noted, is not a concern with Godfrey. Now, if he can only learn the playbook…
