Panther Fans Will See New Faces with Familiar Numbers

Charles Godfrey has selected Mike Minter’s old #30  while DJ Hackett has claimed #18, Drew Carter’s number. What a contrast.  On the one hand we can only hope that Godfrey plays up to the standard of Mike Minter. With Chris Harris setting the tone Godfrey will have his own example to learn from right in front of him. Godfrey comes with a reputation as a hard hitter, a trait that will serve him well if he wants to reach such lofty status. Of course, the Panthers were not his first love:

Forgive Carolina Panthers rookie Charles Godfrey the Houston Texans logo that is tattooed on his right hand.

And don't worry that, until a few days ago, Godfrey didn't know who Mike Minter is or that he's wearing Minter's old number -- 30 -- as the newest member of the Panthers' defensive secondary.

That cracks me up he has the Texans logo tattooed on his hand. Will he get a Panther on the other hand to balance it out?

Hackett meanwhile wants to show Panthers fans how a number 18 is supposed to play. He wants to be the reliable-handed #18 that Panther fans will cheer on Sunday.

Only this No. 18 wasn't the underachieving speedster with suspect hands. The Panthers have traded out Drew Carter for D.J. Hackett.

If he plays for the Panthers like he played in the recent playoffs for the Seahawks then we will have plenty to cheer. He caught everything in sight and ran across the field with reckless abandon. He can truly be the guy that takes the pressure off of Steve Smith and make us forget the old #18. .

I have to comment on this play:

It was only mini-camp, but Smith made one of his trademark athletic, over-the-shoulder grabs for a touchdown near the end of Sunday's practice. He spiked the ball and then turned to about the two dozen fans watching the workout through a fence and raised his hands in celebration.

Oh, and he was single-covered when quarterback Matt Moore found him along the left sideline.

This would be great except that it was our secondary that got torched though it is nice to see Moore getting on the same page with Smitty.

Update:

I totally missed that Darwin Walker is wearing Mike Ruckers #93 .

Now he's home again, wearing the retired Mike Rucker's No. 93 as he works through his first mini-camp as a Panther.

That's another number that requires some exceptional play to wear. Let's hope Walker gives us flashbacks to Rucker in 2003.

this season

The more I think about it, the more excited I get. The key this season is going to be the blocking, and our line is already better than the line that allowed D-Will 5 yards a carry last year. I just enjoy knowing that Hackett will be covered by LBs coming out the slot. Maybe Stewart will be in pass coverage, and he’ll hit some unsuspecting LB with his 235 pounds of muscle while the safety is figuring who to cover, Moose, Smith or Hackett. So a second LB is stuck trying to cover the TE. Then after we do that a couple times, we run a draq. I see us being a top 5 offense and defense this year. We’re gonna win 12 games minimum, and win it all at the end.

The offense will be Top 10 with a healthy Jake

I don’t see how it couldn’t be. The play options that you’re are imagining are just the beginning. You indirectly making a reference to where our focus now needs to be, on OC Jeff Davidson. I think our running game faltered last season due to missed blocking assignments so hopefully we’ve alleviated that. Davidson should have no excuse for not being Top 10 and should be Top 5.

good point

Our play calling was pretty bad last year, or so it seemed. I do believe that there were plays that were called for Smith, but Carr chose not to make the throw, and at other times, Vinny couldn’t make the throw. Moore can make all the throws, but didn’t play much. You also have to wonder how things would’ve been different if we had a bigger receiver blocking LBs and DBs, instead of whatever Colbert and Carter were doing. After a while, you get tired of incompetence, and call a draw on 3rd and 12. So now with the weapons in place, what plays will Davidson call? I want to see Smith moved around. He goes in motion, Hackett and Moose go wide, and Smith is in the slot and covered by a LB. I want to see a reverse with Smith, and Moose and Stewart are blocking. I want to see the TE run a quick out with a one-back set and the other three receivers are blocking and decoys. There are so many options, so I just wanna see something different, creative and effective. All these new guys have skills, but the truth is that we have to cut down in mistakes, regardless of who does it. If we reduce the number of drops, sacks and fumbles on offense, we are already much better than last year by eliminating the negatives.

Our offense staying on the field longer makes the defense better. With teams throwing more in the 2nd half, we’ll have more opportunities to have all three corners on the field at once, and more sacks. There are 32 left tackles in the league who have not blocked Julius Peppers. It’s going to be good.

It's hard to evaluate when you take away the QB

The Panthers gambled and lost of D. Carr. He played so bad at times I don’t think it would have mattered who else was in the line-up. With a quality back-up in Matt Moore the Panthers should be able to survive without Jake for a game or two as the season progressed without getting knocked out of the playoffs. (Of course I just knocked on wood.)

Matt Moore

I really like Matt Moore and I think Jake has learned a lot sitting and watching. He’ll have his best season ever this year, but I still suspect Matt Moore will be our starter when Jake retires, and he’ll in Caroline for the next 10 years. If I’m wrong, and we find someone better, though, I won’t complain.

I keep hearing about Jason Carter, but is he any better than Taye was last year at this time?
