Panthers DE Tyler Brayton Looking for Stability

Panthers free agent signee DE Tyler Brayton is just looking for some stability in where he is going to line up this fall. His tenure with the Oakland Raiders sinced being drafted in the 2nd round was filled with two positions changes that constantly put him up against the learning curve.

“I’m not going to sit here and make excuses for myself and say that messed me up,” Brayton said. “It was a challenge to go out and learn outside linebacker and then to be moved to defensive tackle. Overall it helped me be a better defensive football player.”

Brayton may not use the position changes as an excuse but the Panthers obviously think it had something to do with his failure to meet the high expectations placed on him. I think the Panthers also liked his underachiever status and hope he can revive his career similar to what DT Damione Lewis did last season when he came over from the Rams..

“He’s a guy that came into the league as a high draft pick and played at a variety of positions,” coach John Fox said. “He's played outside linebacker; he's played defensive end; he's played some defensive tackle in pass-rush situations. He's a guy that we thought had a lot to prove and he's worked that way. Hopefully, he'll get some good snaps for us.”

I believe Brayton lined up with the 1st team exclusively at RDE during the Panthers recent mini-camp. If Julius Peppers does move to the left side then that would make sense.

“It’s not going to be one guy. It will have to be a collection of a number of guys who go out there,” Brayton said. “There are four guys rushing the passer as hard as they can. I think we are going to do real well in that department. I wasn’t here last year so I can’t speak on that, but I think we’re headed in the right direction.”

Defensive end to me is still the one question mark our defense has going into training camp. The Panthers will desperately need one of their promising young DE’s to play well enough to win the starting job. Better yet, they will need one to emerge as a serious threat to opposing offenses. Tyler Brayton seems like just the guy out to prove he belongs on the field. All he is looking for is that chance.

Poll
Who will win the starting DE job opposite Julius Peppers?
  • Charles Johnson
  • Stanley McClover
  • Tyler Brayton
  • Hilee Taylor

stealing

I think we need to steal some plays from two superbowl teams, the Patties and the G-Men. For example, I wouldlove for us to switch from the 4-3 to the 3-4 and back again like the Patriots did, but Fox already stated we’re not. However, there were times when the Giants just ran all over them regardless of what scheme they were in. Tricks don’t make up for execution. The Giants, on the other hand, often put there best pass rushers on the field at once. They didn’t give it a name, but they would have three DEs on one side, and a speedy LB or two on the other. We could actually do that, drop Pep in coverage and blitz with Marshall. We have so many options, but I have to admit that I’m pulling for Johnson to be the mainstay opposite Peppers.

LDE or RDE

You said

I believe Brayton lined up with the 1st team exclusively at RDE during the Panthers recent mini-camp. If Julius Peppers does move to the left side then that would make sense.

I thought peppers was moving to RDE to replace Mike Rucker, he played LDE last year so how could he move to LDE?
Maybe you just had the sides reversed?

Left vs. Right

It’s always made sense to me to call it from the offensive perspective, meaning the right DE lines up on the right tackle, which would be Peppers position last season. I see people calling it both ways though around the league. I just looked at the Panthers web site roster to see how they do it but its blank. I will call it however the Panthers specify it to be consistent. I always found it confusing to say the RDE lines up on the LT but thats just me. It can be confusing.

Either way, I think we are on the same page, but different terminology.

I stand corrected

I consulted a friend and fellow blogger on this right vs. left issue and he basically told me I’m a bonehead. Ok, I’ve been called worse and I’ve made worse mistakes for sure. To quote him “it’s universal NFL parlance” that the LDE lines up on the RT in a 4-3 defense.

I will adjust accordingly. Thanks Claytonfire for helping me clarify that.

No Problem

Haha, no problem… I learned it from Madden anyway!
