Panthers Send Jenkins to the Jets

Disgruntled Panthers DT Kris Jenkins was dealt earlier today to the New York Jets for a 3rd and 5th round pick in this years draft.

The Carolina Panthers are expected to receive one of the top five picks in the third round of the NFL draft from the New York Jets in exchange for defensive tackle Kris Jenkins.

The Panthers are also expected to receive a fifth-round pick.

The pick in the 3rd round is high enough to get a decent replacement for Jenkins in the form of Red Bryant or Trevor Laws.

The Panthers and Jets must play golf together or something. This is the second straight year they have made significant trades involving draft picks. Remember it was the Jets who traded up with the Panthers in last years draft to get the CB they wanted (Revis is believe).

Maybe the Jets can keep Jenks happy but I doubt it.

Hmm...

That's a lot of DT for some risky, fairly low draft picks. It seems the Jets may have got one hell of a bargain and the Panthers have a bit of a hole in their line at present.

How confident can you be that these 3rd and 4th draft picks will replace a Pro Bowler like Jenkins?

I guess the point is he was miserable so you might as well get someone who wants to be there

I'm not that confident

the Panthers will draft a viable replacement. Certainly not an immediate replacement, but maybe someone who can be groomed. There should be some decent ones left at the top of the 3rd round.

I would have rather kept Jenkins but he wanted to leave and when that happens its better to get rid of them. I high 3rd round pick doesn't seem like much but it depends on who you draft with the pick.

Plus they save $3M that can used for new blood.

I am not happy

I'm going to miss #77. You know, the commercial that came on immediately after his block of Gramatica's extra point in the 2003 game against the Bucs was that UPS commercial where the guy says "Life got easier once I plugged into the big brown machine." From that moment on, the man I've known as The Big Brown Machine has been one of my favorite players. His sack "dances" are legend.  And I am going to miss him tremendously.

I don't agree with JIMcK's that the Jets got a good deal, since they gave him a world-busting contract, but they certainly didn't unload high draft choices in order to bring him in. So I don't feel like the Jets got a good deal, and I don't feel like we got a good deal. This is lose-lose.

Still, third round picks (and make no mistake, high-third is still not a second-round pick) are expected to play and contribute. So, with four picks in the first hundred, I can only hope we get three starters from day one, with another one or two significant contributors.

I trust the Hurney/Fox brain trust to make smart decisions. I just hope they know what they're doing on this one.

I liked Jenkins too

He will be missed in many ways but it was time for him to go. His choice. If we make the most of the draft pick then I think they did ok with it.
