Panthers Contemplate the Return of WR Muhsin Muhammad

There’s nothing like the potential return of a former fan favorite to get the rhetoric flying in Pantherland. In this case its fans from both sides of the fence, those who felt like a jilted lover when former Panthers WR Muhsin Muhammad left for the green pastures of Chicago versus those who felt he was justified given the Panthers low ball offer after a spectacular season in Charlotte.

One thing is for sure, Muhammad’s agent knows how to play this one:

"Moose has a great affinity for the Charlotte area and a great respect for the Carolina organization," said Joel Segal, Muhammad’s agent. "Obviously, this is new and we’ll take it one day at a time."

Should the Panthers make a decent offer its safe to say he would jump at it. But would Panther fans welcome him back? On one side there’s the jilted lovers:

Too old to waste money on. He has his chance to stay with us and was too greedy. Loved that Rucker and others cut their salaries in order to STAY with our team, but for Moose, it was all about Moose and not about the team. Go for anyone else! - Lynn

And there’s those who consider themselves realists in this dog-eat-dog world:

You'd have to be retarded to lose lots of money to stay with a team. We could easily say the Panthers were disloyal to him by not paying market price. Why should athletes be expected to be altruistic with their livelihood? - JP

I have to admit bringing Moose back would seem like a step back, but only if that is our only move with the receiving corps. Smith, Moose, Jarrett & Robinson doesn’t give me a warm and fuzzy. It would seem another vet would help or an early round draft pick, like Florida’s Andre Caldwell in the 3rd round.

It’s hard to say what the Panthers will do here. My bet is they pass and look for a younger option. What do you think?

the money

I think it's crazy to bring Moose back.  When he left, I thought we made a huge mistake not giving him the money after a 1400 yard, 16 TD season (and the 85-yd TD in the Superbowl).  After that season, he and Will Witherspoon were let go, and we're still trying to replace them.  However, brining him back now would be a mistakee, maybe.  It depends on how much money he wants.  He was drafted the same year as T.O.  He's not that old, and if he can catch the passes over the middle that the other guys drop, and he can make the blocks the other guys don't want to, then maybe he's worth it.  It depends on if Jarrett will catch the passes and make the blocks.  A one season deal might be worth it, with playing time and statistical incentives.

His blocking is key

He was known for that and the Panthers place a premium on it. I'm still torn on whether I want him back though.
