Detroit Lions 0-16 and how to rebuild them.

Tombstone_medium

We are gathered here today to honor the fallen Detroit Lions.

In what can be called the worst team in NFL History, the Detroit Lions fell against the Packers 31-21 at Lambeau Field. This forever seals them in the annals of history as the only team since the 1992 expansion to go 0-16 in a single season. It's a horrible, horrible thing to be able to claim, and I would like to express my condolences towards a team that has fallen so far since the Barry Sanders day into a deep pit of pathetic insignificance. I would hope that this is the first, and last time in our lives that we have to witness such a horrible sight that the front office and coaching staff dares to call a football team.

Star-divide

I place the blame first, foremost, and completely on the shoulders on the coaching staff and the owner, knowing that I echo the thoughts of thousands of disappointed Lion fans as I say that. No matter how inferior the players are, no matter how deep the underdog, a team should be able to grind out a game at some point during the season. The sole blame rests on the shoulders of Rod Marinelli, whom has successfully taken his team down to the very bottom ranks of the NFL. Year after year of taking wideouts in the 1st round of the draft, not preparing for the future while the rest of your players are getting old, it all finally caught up with Detroit.

There is hope though. And you can look no further than the Miami Dolphins to prove this fact. After going 1-15 the previous year, the Miami Dolphins cleaned house in the coaching staff and shored up their offence by rebuilding their offensive line through free agency and taking Jake Long in the draft. They also signed Chad Pennington to play QB, and he's done a great job all season long.

The Lions hold the first pick in the NFL draft, and they will have plenty of money to work with in free agency. Great QB's are coming out of college in Matt Stafford and Sam Bradford. You can't miss with either one of them. In addition, they have another 1st round pick from the Cowboys that they should get around the middle rounds of the 1st round.

The best course of action in this team is a complete rehaul. Fire the head coach, fire both coordinators, and make a examination of all the assistants to find the gems in the rough before firing the majority of them as well. There is the argument to not fire any coaches until you know you can do better, but at this point you're at the bottom of the barrel so you don't have to worry about that. Then you need to raid the free agency market and pick up as many good players as you can. Try to find a veteran QB that can lead your team to comeback wins. There will be more of these than usual this year, some of the notables being Matt Hassleback, Matt Cassel, and perhaps even McNabb. If you get one of them and find a trade partner in the NFL Draft, you can trade down and get some more picks.

In free agency, just shell out the money.

The most important need this team has is the defensive line. The only worthy starters on the D-Line is Cory Redding and Dewayne White, and even then for only another year or two as they're both approaching old age. The Lions rank dead last in the league in rushing yards allowed, and that's because they're constantly being split apart like an argry couple on every single play.

Their second most pressing need is a shutdown corner. It's amazing how many big plays that they allow, especially in the running game. When the ball gets run to their side, they are no help whatsoever. It seems like they're in lala land, wondering why the wideout is blocking him instead of trying to catch a pass.

Their 3rd most important need is a strong safety. The Free Safety on the other side never seems to miss his tackle, but Dwight Smith tends to always get lost in coverage. He cannot find the football, he doesn't watch the QB eyes. He just plain smells. I'm going to put it blunt. He stinks. Get a new one!

4th most important need is a new QB. You have a great wideout in Calvin Johnson, whom has been praised to be as good "As player as Terrell Owens without all of the attitude issues." Get someone who can get him the ball. There are few rules in the NFL draft, but one of the unwritten rules is this: When a franchise QB is within your reach and you do not have one, you pick the franchise QB. You need someone who can win you those close games, and it's not going to happen without throwing the football a little bit. It would be preferable if you could get a veteran in free agency, but if all else fails you have the #1 pick in the NFL Draft.

That's all I would really ask for the Lions to do this off-season. They do this and they should break even and have a chance at the playoffs. What should they not do? Do NOT pick a wideout in the first round of the NFL Draft. You would be making yourself a mockery for the entire NFL to see. I'm not even going to begin to make an argument why you are not supposed to do it. Just don't do it.

I'll talk about the Panther game tomarrow, but for today I hold woe in my heart for the Detroit Lions.

The defense has to be the worst of all time

I hated to see Calvin lose 16 games but there is nowhere to go but up from here. It will be interesting to see if they go with Stanton at QB and address other needs in the draft, such as defense.

It’s interesting that in this day of parity and rules to even the playing field that in back-to-back seasons we get a team that goes 18-0 and another that goes 0-16.

They do have some promising things on offense.

They have a running game. They have Calvin Johnson, whom has put up over 1,000 yards in spite of all the woes. They have two 1st round picks thanks to the General Manager practically robbing Jerry Jones and the Cowboys.

If they don’t pick up one of the veteran QB’s from free agency, I would go with a franchise QB in the first round and build up the D-Line and O-Line with the 1st and 2nd round picks, preferably the D-Line but if there is a good guy available by all means they should get them. I honestly think that if they can find a trade partner they should trade down from the 1st round and gather as many picks as they can.

Update by the way, Rod Marinelli got fired. Step one on the list complete.

Mebbe.

Urgh. There are so many problem areas, it’s impossible to list them all here. Owner. GM. Coach. Scheme. Players. Fans. Just kidding.

No one is going to trade for the 1st overall pick. The money tied to it is just too ridiculous, only Al Davis would willingly put himself in that situation.

I like Stafford, whom I compare to a Cutler-like prospect. I’m not as sold on Bradford, but to each their own.

The funniest thing is, I think the best player in this year’s draft is Crabtree. I think he’s as close to a lock as there is in this age. But no way in hell is he going to be drafted by the Lions after busts Charles Rogers and Mike Williams, along with the fact that they currently don’t have anyone throwing the ball to a complete stud in Calvin Johnson.

Bodden seems like he is in the Shaun Alexander/Larry Johnson/etc. mold where he got his huge payday and has decided to a call it a career.

I don’t think Cassel ends up there, unless the new GM or coach comes over from the Patriots. I think McNabb and Hasselback stay with their current teams. Derek Anderson could be a potential veteran-type they could bring in if they draft a QB- I don’t think he’s the answer, but at least they could hold off from throwing a blue-chip to the wolves for a while. I liked Stanton in college, what the hell happened to him this year?

Also, I just realized Jeff King will be a FA for us next year. Does anyone think he’ll be back? Has Barnidge gotten any love from coaches, or is Rosario the future? Is Gross worth top-tier money? Way too early to be asking these questions, I know.

PS: YAY! The Panthers are a part of the Lions’ pathetic historical low!
PPS: I think these Lions would have beaten the ’76 Bucs. By a LOT.

PPPS: Here is a prize (and the future Lions’ mascot) for anyone who read any or all of this post:

As I see it...

Offense
-They have a WR in Calvin.
-They have a RB in Kevin Smith.
-They added Cherilus to the OL last year, and have Raiola (OC) and Backus (who needs to move to OG). I would use the first pick on the OL, taking either Oher or Smith (or whoever the #1 OT is at the time).
-C-Pep, Kitna (?), Orlovsky… they might not be the answer at QB. But they are alright stop-gaps… and taking a first round QB is no good if the porous offensive line gets him killed 3 games in.
—-So, add a rookie LT #1 and a FA RG (or rookie in round 2 or 3 or something), and you have an o-line of #1 pick/Backus/Raiola/FA (or rookie)/Cherilus. Not the best ever, but definitely an upgrade. They have a WR and a RB, they just need their QB to be able to 1. stay healthy and 2. find CJ.

Defense
Yikes.
-They have Ernie Sims at 1 OLB spot.
-They have Redding & White on the DL.
—-The 2nd first rounder is up in the air. They need a MLB (and maybe a LOLB… I’m not sure how Dizon looked this year). They need a DE/DT (depending on how they view Andre Fluellen). They need a CB. That should get you into round 3. After that, you go BPA… no spot on an 0-16 team should be considered filled (well, #1 WR… but that’s only 1 of the WR spots).

I see their biggest needs to be LT, MLB, CB, LE (can Avril or White play here?), C (depth), OG (depth), TE, S (depth)… in that order (I think).

I’m a big believer in building the lines first… and I really think that’s how the Lions should attack the draft/free agency.

the future

First of all, I have a question. Is Tim Tebow coming out of college and entering the draft? If so, I would take him first. If you disagree with the player, but agree with the taking another QB instead, I can go with that. However, another option may be to draft the best linemen available at #1 (offense or defense), and trade the other 1st rounder for Matt Cassel. Then rework his contract instead of getting into a bidding war for him.

If you must know, yes he was my QB in fantasy football during the championship game, and I won.

So with Matt Cassel and another top notch offensive linemen, they canget to 6-8 wins next year. The Dolphins did it, and you saw what we did by adding Otah and getting Jake back. Kevin Smith is the real deal, and with more time to throw, Cassel and throw to Johnson all day, keeping that horrible defense on the sideline. And by the way, one reason they had the worst run defense in football is because teams didn’t need to throw the ball in the last 20 minutes of the game.

Matt Hassleback and Matt Cassel will both definately be free agents.

Hear about the new QB in Seattle? Word is on the street is that he’s pretty good. I agree with the Utes fan that a #1 pick on a OT would be the best move. However, that’s only if they get a QB. I don’t care how bad their O-Line is, if they don’t have a QB that can throw the football, it doesn’t make a bit of difference.

And don’t bash the Lions general manager. He pulled off one of the biggest trade robberies in the history of the NFL when he trades Roy Williams over to Dallas for a 1st round pick along with a bunch of others. He will probably get fired as well, but he sure doesn’t deserve it.

Kevin Smith is a good RB. Calvin Johnson is a bloody god.

The biggest needs currently is both of their lines with the safety coming in a close second. That alone will get them 3-4 more wins. A good QB could take it to 7-8. I don’t see the Lions pulling a Dolphins comeback, but they could pull off 5-7 wins with a good offseason.
