Broncos vs. Panthers Game Day Open Thread

Denver Broncos at Carolina Panthers, Dec 14, 2008 4:15 PM EST

Welcome to the Panthers game 14 open thread. Feel free to announce your presence via a comment (it's called a 'roll call'). If you're just hanging at the house watching the game like me chime in and let us know you're here. Feel free to vent (as long as you follow the rules) or cheer throughout the game.

We have another great match-up as the Panthers continue hip-deep into their tough closing schedule. The 8-5 and soon to be (after their next game) AFC West champs Denver Broncos bring their #2 ranked offense into Charlotte. Broncos fans are hoping this is a 'trap' game for the Panthers, thinking the Panthers will be looking past this game to next weeks match-up with the Giants. I think instead the Panthers play yet another inspired game in light of the news that owner Jerry Richardson needs a heart transplant.

You can read the NFL.com preview here. Feel free to check in on Mile High Report to see what Bronco fans are saying about the game. Once they put up an Open Thread I'll link to it.

3 Key Match-ups:

CB Ken Lucas vs. WR Brandon Marshall

The Panthers will want the speedier Stokely and Royall covered by CB's Chris Gamble and Richard Marshall. Lucas should be able to stay with Marshall but may give up some key 3rd down catches. Marshall should have a good day.

RT Ryan Harris vs. Panther DE's

Harris will face a bevy of DE's starting with Tyler Brayton, then Charles Johnson and certainly Julius Peppers. Harris wasn't a starter to begin the season but has grown into the roll. Harris will be a target of interest when the Panthers rush the passer.

WR Steve Smith vs. Broncos Secondary

If the Broncos put 8 men in the box to stop the run QB Jake Delhomme will take his shots downfield. That could be a huge demoralizer for the Broncos who will feel forced to throw the ball well to win. Smith should log at least 8 catches and 100+ yards as a minimum.

Panthers Injury Report:

It look like both LB Adam Seward and DE Hilee Taylor won't be able to go. Seward is a blow to special teams and Taylor will limit the Panthers pass rush packages.

The Broncos have had a slew of injuries this season. The most significant for this game has to be the status of CB Champ Bailey.I'm expecting him to play but his performance may be hindered.

Predictions:

Think the Panthers running game continues like a juggernaut through the Broncos noted weak run defense. The Panthers "Double Trouble" RB duo could put up its 3rd 'Double' 100 yard rushing mark of the season.

A common theme is that the Bronco defense will bring a safety up in order to slow the Panther rushing game. If that happens they will rely on FS Marquand Manual to play over the top on WR Steve Smith, who may in turn have a big game. Manuel played for the Panthers past season so I'm sure they know his tendencies. You can't help but think there was a reason the Panthers let Manuel walk and drafted FS Charles Godfrey.

I haven't given a score prediction in a while and I'm loath to do it here but ....might as well.

Go Panthers!

One of those games here

Where the Panthers on paper are clearly the better team, but will probably play down to the opposing team’s level. Hopefully that won’t be the case today as the running games should be able to run whenever, where ever.

One other thing I want to point out. Jake Delhomme has had his share of good games and bad. I do think though that we have not seen the Panthers play at their best yet (imo). We havn’t witnessed that Panther game where both the defense and offense was clicking on all cylinders. Maybe we won’t see that game for the rest of the season (I remain optimistic we will), but I do think we need to start seeing the good Jake atleast once before the postseason gets underway.

btw, I’m here and will be until about 4:40-45

But if they win

And we win, we clinch a playoff spot.

But I feel our chances of winning this game

Will increase even more if the team sees that the Bucs already lost their game this week (just a weird gut feeling)..lol

Speaking of the Bucs

Are you guys getting the Panthers game yet? I still have to watch this boring * game between TB/ATL.

WOOOOO HOO

66 yards and a TD for smith in one drive…

I wonder what he’s going to have when this thing is over?

by MrEd12345 on Dec 14, 2008 4:33 PM EST reply actions

Quick math

equates to 9 possessions per team this game.
9 possessions at 65 yards per amounts to 585 yards and 9 TDs.

by UtesFan89 on Dec 14, 2008 4:36 PM EST up reply actions

Who knows?

That’s what they get when they put 4 linebackers into the game. You can’t do that. Sure it’s nice to try to stop the running game, but Jake Delhomme and Steve Smith won’t allow that. You try that and they’ll kill you all game.

It looks like Mike Shan decided to try to overload on linebackers to stop the run. It isn’t going to work.

Tis true.

The Broncos are going to have problems during the playoffs. Their defense is just too undersized. When they have to resort to desperate measures like 4 backers then you know the defense is having problems.

I think

I’m really starting to hate the NFL.
And CBS & FOX.

They finally show a Panthers game here, and they cut away because it’s 20 points?
I’ve had to see a ton of games where it gets to 30 or so and they still refuse to change it.

by UtesFan89 on Dec 14, 2008 6:54 PM EST up reply actions

It's really ridiculous

At least next week there won’t be anything else to cut away to.

by MrEd12345 on Dec 14, 2008 6:55 PM EST up reply actions

Yep.

Though they’ll probably still find something.

Charlie Brown’s Christmas, or something like that.

Anyone still watching?!?

First false start in a while…
but they said that Jake named one of his horses after Jordan Gross…
False Start!!!
hahahahahhahahahaa

He peaked a defender off of Williams and it looked like he kneed him in the throat

Never mind it was the 4th defender that hit williams while he was stopped.

Is a dropkick what I think it is?

Like in rugby? Does that exist in American football? What would be the point?!

by JIMcK on Dec 14, 2008 6:59 PM EST reply actions

I think they can use it instead of a FG

they drop the ball and kick it after it bounces up, or something like that.

by UtesFan89 on Dec 14, 2008 7:00 PM EST up reply actions

Peppers

Can we go a game without a single tackle for Peppers?!

by JIMcK on Dec 14, 2008 6:59 PM EST reply actions

Or maybe

The Tyler Brayton show? Have they just run everything away from Pep?

Anyone know where

you can listen to the panthers radio postgame on the internet, is it still carried by 1110AM and 99.3 in charlotte?

by ClaytonFire on Dec 14, 2008 7:02 PM EST reply actions

I think

the NFL owns those rights too, so you have to pay for them.

Or maybe that’s the MLB… I don’t remember

Explain to me

Why on Game Centre it said that Denver had 3 TOs left yet let the clock run out with only a 10 point defecit while in the red zone?

by JIMcK on Dec 14, 2008 7:07 PM EST reply actions

Because

it was a 20 point deficit, not 10.

by MrEd12345 on Dec 14, 2008 7:08 PM EST up reply actions

Ah yes.

Because I am an idiot :p That would be the reason! Hahaha!
