Around SBN: Champions League Preview with Jimmy Conrad

CB Chris Gamble signs six-year deal:
Friday, he signed a six-year contract extension, providing an exclamation point on a season that began with a touchdown off a fumble return at San Diego and has seen him add 17 passes defensed, two interceptions, a forced fumble and 70 tackles through 11 games this year.

"I am very excited just to get it out of the way," Gamble said. "I want to be in Carolina. I didn't want to be with another team. I like the organization, the coaching staff, the fans (and) my teammates.

"I wanted to get it out of the way. Luckily we did that and I can get focused back on Green Bay and the rest of the season.

Hmmm...

I wonder what the cap is looking like for next year?

I read somewhere that Jake D is set to become the 5th highest paid QB in the league by virtue of his contract being back-loaded.

This offseason could get nuts for us.

Looks like they've decided on at least one of their corners.

I disagree with the move though. It’s not the contract extension I’m worried about though, it’s the length of it. It’s suprising how Gamble could be inconsistant in the early years of his career and then emerge as a shutdown corner in 2008. I would have been able to rest easier if this was a two or three year deal or so. I guess they’re worrying about the salary cap space though. A longer contract usually means less to pay in early years.

Now they’ll have a decision. Ken Lucas or Richard Marshall? It’s nice to have 3 good corners on the roster but this is a cut that’s been waiting to happen. Ken Lucas shall carry a 7.77 million dollar contract into the 2009 season. Is it really worth it or is Marshall ready to start?

That is the question they must answer.

With Atlanta Matt's Ryan

We will probably need three good CB. Teams have to mainly prepare for their division and I can see that being a pain in our sides for a while.

It’s always interesting what happens in the offseason.

Next Question that needs to be answered

Which free agent-to-be will the Panthers be more focused on resigning, Julius Peppers or Jordan Gross? For some reason, I have a feeling the Panthers will only have the payroll to keep one of the two. And if that is the case, keeping Peppers is the no-brainer imo.

It's my personal opinion that Jordan Gross is nearing his end with Carolina

He’s been riding the franchise tag for too long now, and he’s being paid a lot of money to keep Jake from being hit. When you add that to the factor that he was the single player that didn’t respond to the call for beef at the end of the season, I wouldn’t be suprised if he’s a cap casualty.

And in case you guys don’t know, what I’m talking about when I say the call for more beef is that our O-linemen put on at least another 20 pounds each between the lot of them. The O-Line coach asked for it and made a big deal about it. Jordan Gross was the only one that said that he felt better playing at 300 and he didn’t really care about doing it.

I remember that

But imo he is a player that is a lot easier to replace than a guy like Peppers. The Panthers have no other d-lineman that can do the things he can do (not many teams do). I like Charles Johnson, but to me he looks like his stamina on long drives could be an issue. As for Gross, I think his blocking has been average at best and that will just not cut it for such a key position.

So basically, I hope the front office does everything they can in trying to sign Peppers to a longterm deal because our defense will just not be the same without him. And if they do that, Beason should be next on the list.
