Ask The Falcoholic
It's never too early to start one of these threads, right?
This is a huge game for the Falcons. If we beat you, we're within striking distance of the NFC South crown. If we lose, the Panthers only have to worry about those annoying Bucs. There's a lot at stake here and it's likely to be a very close game.
Before we get into it, feel free to ask any of your burning questions about the Falcons. I promise to answer them with as little sarcasm and outright hatred as I can possibly manage. Good of me, eh?
Thanks for having me by!

What will be the deciding factor if the Falcons beat the Panthers? What is the one thing they must do to win?

I believe to win
We must effectively slow your offense. You guys have an effective running back tandem and Delhomme is no slouch (most of the time). If we can’t stop you, we’re probably in a lot of trouble.

Then that would require...
you to stop the run and take away the short passes. If you force Jake to throw long he hasn’t been doing it too well the past couple of games.

Agreed, and in addition...
You have to keep Smith double teamed the entire game. If your defence slips up and leaves him in one on one coverage, he’ll leave you kicking in the dust.

More specifically
What did Denver do well that the Panthers would be wise to copy?

Denver stopped the run
They plugged every hole and forced us to the outside, where their better-than-advertised corps of linebackers was effective in stopping Michael Turner and Jerious Norwood. They forced us to beat them through the air for most of the game, and we might have done it if it weren’t for a few dropped passes and a particularly egregious interception.
In other words, a mix of good ol’ fashioned effective defense and dumb luck.

Copy this:
Protection. If you can shut down Jamaal Anderson (not too difficult), you should come away with it. We managed one sack against Denver (Clady has been excellent, and supplemented it by clotheslining and mauling Abraham all day…) and it was from a DT.
If the pass rush starts forcing plays from Delhomme, the secondary can step up. I feel confident in our offense. We’re not going to put up 50 on you guys or anything, but if we can play defense, I like Ryan or Turner making something happen to put us over the top.
Ryan, was, is, and has been all season, clutch on 3rd down. You’ve gotta be ready to play on 3rd and long. Also, watch the cadence. ;-)

Heard Jerious Norwood was injured?
I know Turner is the featured back, but if Norwood is injured does that change the running and/or return game this week?

I still expect Norwood to play this week
It changes the kick return game, where Norwood is a force, and also takes away the home run in the running game. Turner can break huge ones, but Norwood takes off like a rocket when he’s given a little space. I like our attack much better with him in it.

How has the Falcons's Defense changed?
When we first met this season, at lot was made of the young CB, how have they fared since our last meeting?

The secondary is getting better
That young CB, Brent Grimes, was replaced by Domonique Foxworth. The difference there is physicality and coverage alike, as Foxworth has been a bit more effective than Grimes. I like his chances of contributing against you guys.

50/50
It’s hard to get a good gauge on things. With Foxworth and Houston, they played stellar against Brees and the Saints (despite the 500 yards passing, in the actual game key passes were broken up often), but a not-so-stellar game against Cutler and the Broncos.
Only two games with Foxworth in the lineup. I will say this, while there weren’t many passes broken up, the DBs were right there on a lot of the passes. I feel like the biggest problem with the secondary is a non-existent pass rush from people not named John Abraham.

Well....when he puts a DaveCarrHOF as his screen name...
That alone can provide a large amount of irk to it. I can’t believe the G-Men picked him up. They better hope that Eli doesn’t go down.

yeah, that sent up a flag
Is Carr still in NY? I guess as long as he doesn’t play he’s safe. Must be nice to collect that kind of cash for riding the pine.

As much as I love John Fox....
I still have no idea why he picked him to come to Carolina. But to answer your question yes, he’s still in New York. He’s getting paid pretty good to ride the pine, you’re right. I thought his career was over in Carolina for sure.
He’s a Tom Brady diva with none of the talent he has. I remember an interview where he joked about the fans chanting “We want Moore.”
He said that he was doing his best to score them more points.
It will make my day if he starts against Carolina. Eli needs to come down with the Flu or something that week.

Roddy White
I’ve been impressed with Roddy White this season. He’s become a star but I was not impressed with that drop at the end of Denver game. That was a game winner and a clear drop. Does he do that a lot? Will that drop affect any confidence the coaching staff may have built up in him?

It won't affect their confidence
Because the dude is just that good. It is an unfortunate truth that he drops passes from time to time, which is a leftover from the days where he merrily flung passes intended for him all over the field. I expect he’ll bounce back in a big way this week.

Sam Baker
Are you worried that John Fox will take advantage to the injury of Sam Baker and create a mismatch by sticking Julius Peppers in there all game? Just how good is his replacement?

His replacement would be Todd Weiner
A tough guy, a veteran, and a guy who is totally overmatched by Julius Peppers. They’ll have to help him all game long, and that could create some huge problems for us. You could say I’m a little worried.

Weiner Limited?
I’ve seen reports that Weiner has been limited in practice. Any indications that he won’t play? If he doesn’t play, who would replace him? If he does play, will the injury limit his ability?

He may be somewhat limited
But I fully expect him to play. Weiner isn’t the best option for Ryan’s blindside, but the options behind him are even less appetizing. He may need some help against you guys.

He is
At least in terms of tackling and pure coverage. He lacks the big play potential that Grimes brought to the table, but Grimes actually made very few of those, so it works out.
