Panther Fans Should Skip the Kool-Aid

If there has been an uglier win in the NFL, I'd really hate to see that game. The Panthers passing offense did all they could to lose. Jake Delhomme threw four interceptions, completed only 7 passes for 72 yards, and was sacked twice. The offense only gain 5 first downs, with a couple more off of Oakland penalties. With that in mind it's no wonder we lost the time of possession game, Oakland had the ball for 37:02 to the Panthers 22:58.

With number like those, if we were playing a better offensive team, Carolina probably would have lost. However, our defense decided it was their time to shine, and DE Julius Peppers decided to have his season best day, 7 solo tackles, 3 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, and 1 pass defended, not counting QB hurries or pressures. The way he played also opened the door for LB Thomas Davis and DE Charles Johnson to each record a sack as Oakland had to double team him frequently. Definitely have to give credit to the Coaches for moving Peppers around to take advantage of match-ups. Don't know how much this happens around the league but I think its a good strategy.

In addition, WR Mark Jones had a big day with his best punt and kickoff returns of his career. The last punt return of 55 yards setup our field goal drive to finally put the game away.

I, as many, were expecting the Panthers to blow through the Raiders. While I know any give Sunday is true, I did not expect it to happen this week. However, the Kool-aid had been poured and to be honest I probably would have taken that drink if we would have blown them out. I did approach the game with "guarded optimism" and while it was the right approach I never thought it would be that close.

I speak of skipping the kool-aid because this game is another indicator to the team that we have bad days. It will help the team not get high on their own abilities but also realize they can depend on each other. It also helps us as fans to realize we can lose and when it happens we have to realize our team can play better. Would we have taken a drink of the kool-aid if the game became one sided early? Possible, but I don't know. What I do know is that by playing the way we did and still getting the win was the best possible outcome.

Put the kool-aid away and we will live to see another day.

Electric Blue-Kool-Aid-too sweet for my taste!

As Howie said in the Fox pregame show..it’s tough to get high on the Panthers because they always seem to let you down. I’m looking for a complete game from the offense, defense, and special teams. If they get it together and beat up on Detroit, Atlanta, and Green Bay( not saying that’s an easy feat) then the bandwagon will really begin to fill up. That Tampa game looks like a must win for the division and the Giants game could be deciding homefield advantage for the playoffs…who knows. Please Panthers don’t let us down!

I'm worried first about the ATL game

Its in ATL and they are playing well and playing with confidence.

Kool-Aid is awesome.

The Panthers aren’t going to let us down! Don’t worry! I have a strange feeling that if we got too far behind Jake Delhomme would have snapped back into high gear, pulled the offence aside to a big speech, and started pulling off some amazing passes. We’ll never know. But what did happen was that our defence held them the entire day, and there were no blocked punts. Massive kudos to them for an awesome game. I know most fans are offensive minded, but god was it fun watching a QB get pounded after every play.

seriously...

Does anyone have any info on Jake? I got no information, but he was throwing the ball like he was hurt. My guess is that he is injured, either his elbow or his shoulder. I haven’t heard anything at all about any kind of injury, but I’m trying to find an excuse of why he threw the ball so horribly. If he plays like that next week, he’s gonna have to be benched. 7 of 27 is worse than I’ve ever seen from someone who was allowed to finish the game. And I’m not just saying that because I have Smitty on my fantasy football team.

No injury has been reported and I never saw him act injured during the game

He was just off throwing the ball. Both of the picks on deep passes were underthrown

No QB can be great every Sunday

Great games are balanced with bad games. In Jake’s case we love him because he has produced well in the big games. If he then balances that with his worst games against the worst teams then isn’t that the best we can hope for? His next real test will be next week in ATL. We can’t overlook that one.

Regardless

It is a win. One more in that column. Hopefully our guys go out and play better next time and have that much more of a reason to succeed.

These guys need to have short memories, whether after a big win, an ugly win, or a tough loss.

My question is what were we game planning for in our week off? Every other team we are yet to face? Probably. I would’ve looked beyond the Raiders if I were on the coaching staff.

Our team is flying under the radar, and we’re primed to make some moves before the season ends. Let’s not forget these guys are still playing for their jobs and the job of their coach…

The Raiders D is better than they have been playing before the Panthers game

The CB Asomughe has been called the best in the league and after what I saw I couldn’t argue too much.
