Panthers Schedule Suddenly Looking a Lot Tougher
When the Cardinals beat the Cowboys the other night it made me rethink that ‘W' I had ticked next to the Cardinals game in my preseason predictions. The Panthers play those same Cardinals in two weeks. The Cardinals aren't the only over-achiever on the Panthers schedule. Throw in the rejuvenated Falcons, Saints and Broncos and the Panthers schedule suddenly (at least for me) looks harder than I had expected.
Sure the Oakland (Away) and Detroit (home) games look like gimmies (knock on wood), but consider the remaining games:
New Orleans
Arizona
@Atlanta
@Green Bay
Tampa Bay
@Denver
Giants
@New Orleans
The Panthers need to get five wins out of this group some how. So where I thought the front end of the Panthers schedule was tougher than the back end it's now looking the opposite. They won't be able to afford too many performances like this past weekend in Tampa.
I would say the Atlanta and Denver games should be fairly winnable, but Arizona, Green Bay and the Giants are all going to be tough wins. That still leaves the four division games in what is a much tougher NFC South. Is there 11 wins there? Certainly if the Panthers play like they did against the Bears or Falcons. But if the Cardiac Cats show up it's going to be a shoot out every week.
Rather than think about the possibility of things going bad, I prefer to think this is what Panther lore will be made of. This 2008 version of the Panthers are underdogs to get to the playoffs and should be. They've had two straight non-winning seasons and did not sign any big names in the off-season. Yet we've had impressive wins over the Chargers, Bears and Falcons including two wins with our biggest offensive weapon. We've added balance to both the offense and defense and filled some holes with talented players through the draft and free agency. We can even take a little heart in the two losses coming from tough (winning) teams.
Rest assured should these Panthers make the playoffs they will be very battle tested from their schedule, having defeated a number of good, playoff-quality teams. We can also be assured these Panthers will be worth watching (the Tampa game withstanding) as Jake will surely have to create some 4th quarter magic, probably more than we would like. I plan to be there every minute of it!

Panthers last weekend
As long as the Panthers that played the Bucs last weekend don’t show up again I believe they have a fighting chance. This weekend will definitely be a test.
So far the reactions of the players suggest they will play better
No finger-pointing, just resolve. The Panthers usually respond well to these situations coming off a bad loss.

You still have to realize that we're a 03 equivalent though.
To me, this team has the capacity to defeat any team in the league. There is no sure superteams like the Colts and the Patriot teams of the past. Just about every team here among the upper tier of teams are equal with each other, and our defense is good enough to turn any game into a ‘cardiac cats’ type of game.

Very true
It’s a wide open season, no clear favorite. Also, notice how up and down week to week so many teams are? Redskins beat the Cowboys then lose to the Rams. Browns get crushed by Baltimore and then beat the Giants.
It’s going to be all about who is playing well at the end of the season and can continue it into the playoffs.

Good for Playoffs
I believe we still will make the playoffs and playing harder teams will be good for us when playoff time rolls around.
cards
arizona is in carolina, right? they don’t travel well, they play a whole lot better in arizona. we shouldn’t have a problem with them. (unless its just one of those days…)
Is it is
Yes, Arizona comes to Charlotte. And you make a good point. Also the game this week is in Carolina and hopefully home field advantage can come into play and be a positive for us.
scared...
of that home game.
Your 3-0 at home. The Saints are 0-2 on the road. Granted both those loses were definatly winnable so it should be a very good game.
Lets hope the officials call it fair on both sides of the ball.

Honestly I was hoping for some home cooking!
The Panthers need a break given they have been prone to shooting themselves in the foot.

the foot? how about the whole leg.
Jaxon.
I am a Saints fan. If any team knows about being prone to shooting themselves in the foot.. its us lol
If you want to see a team do it to perfection, watch the Vikings at Saints monday night game.
I cant wait for Sunday. This is a key matchup.
