Bonehead of the Week: Jerry Jones
In a incredible deadline trade in the final hours of the trading period, the Detroit Lions shipped receiver Roy Williams over to the Dallas Cowboys in return for a 1st, 3rd, and 6th round pick in the 2009 NFL Draft. This immediately moves Roy Williams into the starting lineup as the 2nd receiver behind Owens and pushes Patrick Crayton into 3rd string. This trade propels the Dallas Cowboys offense into one of the best in the league, and makes their receiving core simply ridiculous.
Yet it is clear who the winner is in this trade. The winner of this trade is the Detroit Lions, a rebuilding team that just put their main QB John Kitna on IR because of injury. That is a move that Panther fans like us know too well how it will ruin a season. The Lions desperately need young stars that can help turn their team around, and the sacking of GM Matt Millen will prevent boneheaded decisions that they have had the tendency to make in drafts past. The Detroit Lions now have a goggling of draft picks that include 5 in the first 100 picks in the NFL draft.
The Detroit Lions managed to catch the Dallas Cowboys in a state of desperation. Tony Romo is down for 4 weeks because of a broken pinky, Pacman Jones got himself suspended for substance abuse ((Again.)), and the Cowboys coming off a rough overtime loss against the Arizona Cardinals 24-30. So Jerry Jones is having a bad day. His hair is a mess and he‘s aggravated at being bothered by the media all day. Then he gets a phone call from the Lions, and in a act of desperation he agrees to send the draft picks off for immediate help at WR that isn‘t needed. What was he thinking? It’s a stupid decision, and this robbery of the Cowboys should turn out great for the Lions. If the draft picks are spent well then it will work wonders in rebuilding their team.
They need to get a franchise QB like Tim Tebow, Matthew Stafford, or Colt McCoy in the first round to learn under Kitna, solidify the offensive line, and start freshening up the defense with nice young talent. If the Detroit Lions can pull this draft off in the right way, they can be a playoff team in a couple of years. They have an opportunity, and they need to take advantage of it.
Meanwhile, the trade does nothing for the Cowboys. All it does is build depth to a receiving core that already has plenty of talent. The cost was too great. Those draft picks could have been better spent getting a defensive back that can help stop the deep ball that the Cowboys will no doubt be susceptible to in the coming weeks. This move screams panic all over the cover, and all it can do is hurt the Cowboys in the long run.
All hail Jerry Jones, Bonehead of the Week.

They are a very deep team
with what 14-15 Pro Bowlers? I certainly didn’t see the great need for Williams but I guess he did. Hmmm…two Roy Williams on one team. I agree its a high price to pay and if it means the Cowboys suck in the long run then hey…it was worth it!
