Panthers Adjust Roster: Sign Safety; Bucs Sign Biddle
Wow, I figured the Panthers would make some changes but I didn’t expect this. They waived two players, placed another on IR and then added three players. The word is that they are also in the process of signing safety Marquand Manuel who was waived by Green Bay and also former Panther CB Dante Wesley who was waived by NE. We can expect two more players to be waived to make room for them.
I identified Manuel as a potential waiver wire pick up back in June here. I'm still not too excited about him but I'm glad the Panthers have added another option at safety.
The waiver of Will Montgomery was no surprise; the Panthers just didn’t need him. I am surprised they cut loose Rashard Butler though, the second year tackle from Miami. I thought they would give him one more year to develop.
The other roster spot was opened up by putting Michael Gaines on IR. I don’t recall him getting hurt during the Steelers game but obviously he did. This one hurts as Gaines was our primary blocking TE.
The Panthers signed a TE from Minnesota Marcus Freeman. Freeman is UDFA from Notre Dame who only had 14 receptions in his career so I have to assume he is being brought in to block.
The Panthers also brought in a tackle waived by Atlanta Frank Omiyale, a third year player from Tennessee Tech. I don’t know much about him but will do some research and report on that later.
The final signing was a third QB Matt Moore waived by the Cowboys. I’m going to post a diary on SB Nations Cowboys blog Blogging the Boys and get the low down on him. I’ll report back on that too.
The Panthers should announce their practice squad by Tuesday, which will consist of a maximum of eight players after they clear waivers.
The most heartbreaking news is that the Bucs jumped all over Taye Biddle. It’s a good situation for Taye since the Bucs need WR depth. I hate the thought of him coming back to haunt us twice per year at some point in the future though probably not anytime soon.
