Panthers vs. Falcons: Blogger Q & A

I traded five questions with SB Nation blogger The Falcoholic about this weeks match-up. Here's what he had to say.

Question 1: The hot news is the Byron Leftwich signing. Seems like a no-brainer to me. How long till he gets on the field?

Dave the Falconer: Leftwich won't even see the field for two or three weeks as he gets acclimated to the offense. After that he'll likely pass former insurance agent Chris Redman on the depth chart and start gunning for Harrington's job. Unless Harrington shows some improvement in the next few weeks, I'd expect Leftwich to be taking his job by week 7 or 8. I'm interested to see how this will play out.

I’ll bet he gets in sooner than that. Week 5 before the season gets too far out of hand.

Question 2: Seems like Jerious Norwood is off to a slow start. Will this be his break out game? Has the switch away from zone-blocking been a cause?

Dave the Falconer: I think the switch away from zone blocking has been a part of the problem. I thought our current personnel could handle the change, but through the first two games I've become a lot less confident in their ability to block for...well, basically anyone. Norwood has the potential to break off long runs, but with your linebacking corps and secondary I doubt he'll make a ton of noise. Expect maybe 10 carries for 50 yards from young Jerious, but if the line shows any improvement he's going to be very dangerous very quickly.

He’s dangerous now. We will need to contain him and keep him from getting open space.

Question 3: Much gets made of the Steve Smith vs. DeAngelo Hall match-up. Any predictions for this match-up this Sunday? Smith will get __ yds and __ tds. Hall will get _ INT's.

I would be surprised if Steve Smith was held under 100 yards. DeAngelo Hall is a good guy and a very good corner, but he's not quite elite enough to shut down one of the best receivers in football. I'd also expect him to get 1 TD, but I think Hall will start clamping down on him later in the game. I do think Hall will get a pick off of Delhomme because he has good instincts and I've never thought of Jake as being the most accurate guy in the league. Smith will win the matchup, but hopefully not by enough to change the outcome of the game. Unless the outcome of the game is a Panthers win; in that case, I hope Smith gets stuck in traffic.

I’m surprised to hear him say that about Hall. I had thought he was good enough to shut down Smith as well as anyone else in the league outside of Champ Bailey.

Question 4: How's your #1 pick DE Jamaal Anderson doing? Obviously the Matt Schaub trade was very poor timing. Seems I remember the Falcons traded away Brett Favre too. Is this a karma thing?

Dave the Falconer: Anderson's off to a slow start, which I didn't expect. He has a lot of power on the line around him but hasn't been able to capitalize on his chances, which I expect will come with time. For now, John Abraham and Jonathan Babineaux will have to provide pressure along the line, and last week they did a damn good job of it.

And I'll probably have to engrave it on my tombstone, but I don't regret the Matt Schaub trade. It's too early for me to say that Matt Schaub is better than Anderson, CB Chris Houston and G Justin Blalock, all young players with terrific potential at positions we needed depth at. There'll be plenty of time to cry about it if Schaub turns out to be a legend, but for now I'll say the bad karma isn't here. Favre was an awful mistake, but I still say we got the better end of the Schaub deal.

Those are three good players but not having a QB at this point hurts for the current season. This is a trade that will take a few years to truly evaluate.

Question 5: How are you liking Bobby Petrino? He walked into a hell of a mess. Will he be able to turn things around? Predict the score: Panthers __                        Falcons __

Dave the Falconer: Again, it's too early to comment on Petrino. The first week I felt like he made some crappy personnel moves and he's clearly not dealing with the team Falcons fans hoped he would be. I'll take a pass, at least until this game is over. I do think that he'll start to turn the ship around by the end of the season, but by then I have a hunch it's going to be too late to salvage this year. I'm going to go ahead and predict that the Panthers will beat the Falcons by a final score of 17-10; a low firepower game seems appropriate given the struggles we've seen so far
Good luck!

I feel for you buddy. The Falcons would have more to cheer about if not for a QB I won’t mention by name. Let’s hope Leftwich is able to bail them out but if not there is one bright side to this season: Darrin McFaddin!

good exchange
Good questions and answers.  I gotta tell you, though, that I agree with him about Hall.  Hall is a very good corner.  CBs get more credit than they deserve because of the lack of elite receivers.  Besides Smith, who is there?  Moss, Harrison, Wayne, TO, about three guys named Johnson...  I only remember him facing one of those guys, and TO torched him bad!  Smith is faster and cuts quicker.

I never liked the Anderson pick by the Falcons, and he'll never be better than a McGlover or Charles Johnson.  That's fine for them if he wasn't a high draft pick.  He's not strong enough and can't read offenses well enough, like Peppers and Jason Taylor.

I think Harrington provides our safeties a vote of confidence they need.  We should come out with a pretty good win here, and the division lead if TB loses.
