Texans Make a Statement with Win over Panthers

This isn't an expansion team any more. That's the message I got from this game. Also, the Panthers team that lost 3 games in the preseason showed up. Turnovers, dropped passes, missed assignments,... you name it, the Panthers did it.

I'm not going to take anything away from the Texans. They played a great game. They got down by 14 points and not only did they not fold, they brought it to the Panthers. Matt Schaub dissected the Panther secondary while the pass rush hit a brick wall. They shut down the running game and made Jake run for his life.

So here's an open thread for the Texan fans to toot their horn or Panther fans to talk about what went wrong. Go ahead, you guys have something to cheer about.

Honk Honk

The Texans looked great.

Schaub, as we've come to expect, was extremely poised.  Other than the badly-underthrown ball (which we got a huge break on by having a camera angle that clearly showed the ball was loose and not intercepted), I don't think he could have played better.  I could nitpick and say he was scaring the hell out of me early by throwing the ball high and making everyone jump for them, but a completion's a completion so I'll shut up.

Green and Dayne got what they could against the Panthers' D, and seemed to get what they needed when they needed it.

I could have used more pressure on Delhomme, but at least we grabbed him a few times and hurried him quite a bit.  And you couldn't ask for a better effort from our much-maligned offensive line.

The Panthers looked...well...they were definitely dangerous, but they weren't firing on all cylinders.  Early on, they were scary, but then they went flat.  I don't know if it was watching their 14-point lead melt to nothing or what, but you could tell something was going wrong.  Hopefully they were just stunned to find out these aren't the same Texans from years past.

Here's hoping the rest of the league knows that feeling.

Reversed INT changed the Game
If it doesn't get overturned the FG is averted and the subsequent fumble and special teams score. I predicted a special teams score by Houston but that isn't what I meant.

The offense definately went flat after the 1st quarter. Houston seemed to know what to expect from the Panthers and when they were able to shut it down the Panthers couldn't adjust. They just kept running the same plays.

Nice post.

I will be shocked

When Colbert actually catches a pass.  Why is he unable to do so?

He pisses me off
He looked bad on that drop too. And Carter had that long pass go through his hands. It would have been a hard catch for sure, but one he is capable of making. The Houston secondary took away the downfield passing game, or our coaches did.

Much as I hate to say it...

it was probably your coaches.  Other than Dunta (who somehow managed to shut down Smith), we have no real corners.  If Petey Faggins was involved in the play, he was certainly not the one shutting down anything.
