Four Panthers to Watch Against the Giants

I know I’ve been giving Pat Y of Charlotte.com a lot of grief lately but he makes it too easy. His latest post calls out four players who have something to prove during tonight’s preseason game against the Giants (8:00pm): Kerry Colbert, David Carr, Eric Shelton and CJ Wilson. I think he is about half right.

Calling out Kerry Colbert is low hanging fruit. That’s like saying the key to the Panthers winning this year is scoring more points than its opponent. Colbert has been under the microscope in camp and for good reason. He was expected to contribute last season but put up only 5 catches and ended up being inactive the last four games. Many people think he is fighting for a starting spot but I think he is fighting for a roster spot. He has some tough competition in Taye Biddle, Kevin Youngblood and Chris Horn; all capable of taking his job. There will also be some focus on Drew Carter but I think his ability to stretch the field gives him the edge over Colbert.

I don’t think David Carr has much to prove tonight. He will certainly want to perform well to gain his teammates confidence but if he doesn’t I don’t think it will change much. Brett Basanez has been playing well but if a replacement is needed during the season you know Fax will go for the experienced Carr first. Speaking of Basanez I’m sure he will see plenty of action tonight and I look forward to seeing how he does. Don’t be surprised if he outplays Carr.

I agree Eric Shelton has something to prove. Since being drafted in the second round in 2005 he’s missed most of his two seasons due to injuries. So the first question is "Has he lost any of his power?" I think the Panthers will have a need for a goal line back who can power it in from the three yard line. If Shelton can show a nose for the end zone he could secure a spot on the roster.

CJ Wilson is low hanging fruit as well. Every 7th round draft pick in the league has something to prove and cannot start proving it soon enough. If you’re going to focus on the safety position I say keep an eye on Deke Cooper. He is in line to be the starting FS and I’m not sure he can handle it yet. He should get plenty of action tonight because the Panthers have to decide real soon if they need more help back there.

Another player to watch is Dante Rosario, the TE drafted to serve in the H-back role. This position is new to the Panthers so I will be interested to see what formations he lines up in and what plays are called for him. Will he get opportunities in the red zone. We know the Panthers struggled in the red zone with options last year so it will be interesting to see what plays are called in this situation. With the emmergence of Jeff King Rosario's roster spot is no guarantee.

Finally, I want to see what TE Jeff King does. He has been getting a lot of play calls in TC and has looked good. I want to see that translate into catches on the field. I want to see if he has the speed to stretch the middle of field and keep the safety from cheating up to stop the run.

What players are you looking forward to seeing tonight?

Biddle

It's early in the 3rd, but Taye Biddle has looked good (I'd assume... I'm stuck with the CBSSportsline gamecast and a radio broadcast online)... he has 2 TDs, including an 85-yard bomb from Basanez.
2 receptions... 2 TDs.

And... the CBS gamecast is off (yet again).
They always seem to have problems.

Thanks for the Post

I had planned to watch the game but am stuck listening to it on the radio as its blacked out for some reason. I bought the Sunday Ticket for $250 bucks but now I find out preseason games are not included. I'm pissed. I'll have to watch the tape tomorrow on NFL network.

Regarding Biddle, I was saying he looked good in practice. I'm not surprised he has excelled at all.

Thoughts from the game

Apologies to the powers that be if this is not in the right spot.

Good stuff:

The passing game is clearly improving; Biddle is definately a secret weapon.  All the QBs looked good; Carr looks to be solid and Basanez has an arm.

McClover is a beast, he will start before the end of the season if not sooner.

Beason was a machine tonite but then again a lot of tackles were against 2nd string players.  Still at least he got some work in tonite and looked good (on the internet at least).

Good to see Foster rip off a long run to cap off the first, the new blocking scheme is apparently more suited to his style.  Hopefully he can keep it up.

Kasay, as always, is money.  Baker, ditto.  Probably the only consistent special teams guys we have.

The secondary wasnt bad but the backups had some really stupid penalties, hopefully that wont be a problem for the team like it was last year.

The TEs saw more action tonite than they did all of last season, it is good to see Davidson is living up to his promises to get them more involved.  Hopefully King will step it up so we dont have to rely on Gaines, who is a better blocker than receiver.  Rosario didnt get much tonite, hopefully that will change too.

Otis Grigsby?  Why not.  Good game from him, hopefully some of these backups who were landing tackles tonite will be special team gamers and change my mind about how bad that squad still is.

Bad stuff:

The running game around the goal line wasnt effective and really wasnt used much. Shelton continues to be unimpressive, which is a shame since we need a power back (have not had one since Davis).

Punt returns were not impressive.

Special teams covering kickoff returns were not good.  This was a sore spot last year, hopefully this will improve too.  Maybe we need to bring back Hankton ....

Whats the frequency Kerry?  Will he ever get back into the game?????  Maybe ATL will sign him to provide company to their receiving busts White, Jenkins, etc.

If anyone cares to do so, post your thoughts.

It might only be preseason but I am really exited about the season based on what we got out of these guys tonite.

my boys

I'm just hyped about the season.  It seems everyone looked good.  I suspected Foster would be better this year than last after putting a full 18 months between him and that broken ankle in the 2005 playoffs.  Biddle looked good, too, but I hear Ryne Robinson is impressing at WR during camp more than him.  I'm not sure how true that is, but I truly think Biddle stays on as the #4 and Robinson as the #5 and return man.  If that's the case, then why do we still talk about Colbert?

Jenkins is going to have a monster all-pro year.  He and Peppers are playing for new contracts, Foster and Lucas are playing to keep their starting spots, Wahle is playing to prove he belongs here, Delhomme and Smith are playing to bury everybody because they are still steaming over last year.

Bring it on.  The Panthers are going to the SUper Bowl.
