Panthers News and Notes

With the start of camp there’s a lot of news coming out and a lot of topics to cover. Here’s some of the interesting stuff. I hope to get to my first camp session on Thursday.

Players Excited about the New Offense

It's nice to hear the offense getting excited about the playbook.

Drew Carter took a handoff from fellow wide receiver Steve Smith and sped untouched down the left sideline to complete a perfectly executed double reverse Saturday..."The enthusiasm with everyone is there," Wahle said. "We want to get better. We don’t want to be (24th) in the league again. It’s one of those things where guys are looking at this and saying, ‘We can do something and we can have a good offense.’

A double reverse? Whooa, did we even run a double reverse in 2006? Maybe once on 3rd and 24.

King Getting First Chanced

The starting TE job is Jeff Kings to lose. I think the kid is ready and has the skills to get it done. We need the TE spot to produce three or four catches a game minimum. I watched a replay of the 2007 Indy-Patriots AFC Conference championship and the Super Bowl over the weekend. I could argue Dallas Clark was/is a key cog in the Indy offense and those two victories. We need a TE that presents a similar advantage though I’m not saying King is anywhere near as good Clark yet.

There's more info on that here.

Bridges Suspended for Two Games

I’m sure you’ve heard this news already but its worth repeating. He was getting work with the first team at RG so his timing couldn’t have been worse. If Kalil starts at center and Hartwig moves to RG Bridges may be screwed. Figuratively speaking of course, not in the literal sense he was probably looking for at that strip club.

Beason close to Signing?

The Panthers have always been good about getting their players in camp. With the players selected around him already signed I bet the Panthers get this done by the end of the week.

Diggs Holding On to His Spot

With Beason holding out it’s looking better for Na’il Diggs to hold onto his spot. He also claims to be healthy and ready to hit. He’s going to need to use his mind and play smart to keep his spot because he can’t compete with Beason physically.

"I'm a lot better mentally as far as coming in and knowing the scheme, knowing players, coaches, knowing where I need to be," Diggs said. "It's always easier the second time around."

Morgan Hopeful in Return

Twenty-five tackles in the Super Bowl. That’s what I always think of when I think of Dan Morgan. This guy is a gamer and one of the best when healthy. The Panther fans really love him and include me in that group as well. I hope this new helmet gives him the protection needed because I pray he lasts the whole year. If so, the Panthers defense will be hard to run against.

"The minute I don't feel good is the minute I won't be playing football," Morgan said. "But I feel great right now."

[Update by Jaxon]

The Sports Xchange has a number of blurbs from the Panthers camp. What caught my attention was Jordan Carstens being waived due to a failed physical. Too bad, I really liked the big guy but hopefully he can fully recover. If so I imagine the Panthers will bring him back, but at less money. We have to remember, it is a business.

Beason/Diggs

Um... it's not looking good.
Story from CBS Sportsline...

Talks about Beason's contract problem... and mentions an injury to Diggs.

Diggs Injury

Yeah, it was scary but then it was reported he was walking without a limp later. I don't understand why they can't get Beason signed, unless his agent is being unreasonable. With the picks around him signed thats the only thing it could be.

LBs

I'm not worried.  If you haven't noticed, that's the central theme to all my posts.  Diggs is a quality guy, and we knew that when we let our leading tackler, Draft, go in FA.  Look out for James Anderson.  He can play all the LB spots, and knows the defense better in his second year.  Morgan healthy, with Diggs, Anderson and Thomas Davis will be a formidable LB rotation.  Richard Marshall, Anderson, and DeAngelo Williams will show that our last draft class was incredible.  Marshall is as good as Gamble and Lucas, and Davis can cover most TEs and WRs because he has the speed to do it.  When Beason gets in camp, he'll have to learn quickly, but we don't need him right away to win.  A better return game gets us an average of five less yards to go every possession, Kasay has the leg for long FGs (even attempted a 65 yarder last year), and zone blocking will take pressure off of Delhomme and the entire defense.  This year is looking good, with or without Beason.
