Panthers Sign Kicker; Make Other Roster Moves

As has been widely reported, the Panthers have placed DE Julius Peppers and C Justin Hartwig on IR ending their seasons. That means rookies Ryan Kalil and Charles Johnson should see extended playing time in the season finale against the Bucs.

An interesting move in my view is the signing of a former Baltimore kicker and wide receiver.

The Panthers claimed kicker Reese Lloyd off Baltimore' practice squad and signed wide receiver Travis Taylor.

I posted recently of K John Kasay’s inability to get touchbacks on kick offs. I wonder this Lloyd guy will assume that role this Sunday. I’ll be watching for that. Along the same lines it’s about time the Panthers got a FA WR to try in the #2 slot. Taylor is a big receiver who never reached his potential in Baltimore. He may be nothing more than a blocker but I’m all for us trying somebody different opposite Steve Smith. Musin are you ready to come back buddy?

In other moves:

The Panthers also added defensive backs Patrick Ghee and Eddie Canonico to the practice squad.

Let’s hope the Panthers learned their lesson and go after a FA free safety and other receivers. Bob Sanders anybody? Dante Stallworth?

Who do you think we should go after?

running backs.

there are also some good free agent running backs out there..julius jones, jamal lewis.  i'd like to see carolina get back to running the ball effectively.

Jamal Lewis would be nice

He's the power back we have been missing. Foster should go simply because of the fumbles. I'd like to see if D-Will could carry a 20+ carry per game load but if not Lewis would be nice.

dwill

we may find out sunday, i wouldnt be surprised to see deangelo run alot and also dwayne jarrett might get a good deal of play. its evaluation time, and i would think all these guys with the question marks beside their names will see lots of playing time

I hope so

Jarrett is such an enigma at this point. Can he play or not? I didn't think Moore could play until he got a start and proved me wrong. Maybe Jarrett would do the same. I think D-Will is going to be a good every down back when given the chance. He may not be too good in the power running game when we need just a yard but on 1st & 2nd down he will dazzle.

jarret

theres no question in my mind as far as him knowing how to play, but knowing the actual plays??  thats a different story.

Good point
The problem is his extended learning curve. How many seasons is it going to take?

Hill earned the starting job for the 2009 season by beating out Alex Smith, who missed last season after re-injuring his surgically repaired throwing shoulder. Head coach Mike Singletary largely chose Hill based on his play down the stretch last year: he went 5-3 over the final eight games and he also owns a 5-0 record at home in Candlestick Park.
