Panthers Foster Now NFL’s #2 RB for Fumbles
With his latest fumble Panthers RB DeShaun Foster moved into a tie for second place in the NFL with Clinton Portis with 5 lost fumbles. Only the Saints Reggie Bush has more total fumbles this season (8 fumbles, 7 lost) versus 7 total for Foster. Worse still is Foster’ fumbles seem to occur at the worst possible time as this latest one opened the door for the route.
This is nothing new from Foster. He started the trend last season when he had four lost fumbles. On the surface 4 or even 7 fumbles doesn’t seem like a lot over the course of 16 games. What I’m surprised about is that it hasn’t had an impact on his number of carries or playing time. When the game is on the line a successful NFL team must be confidence his RB is not going to cough up the ball.
Only in the rare occasion when the player is hit directly on the ball do I cut the RB any slack. Otherwise I have very little patience. Does anyone else agree you should bench a RB who is prone to fumbling? Take my poll below.

There is no real reason why Foster still gets the ball so much. Let's compare him to the other two RBs mentioned in this article. Clinton Portis has proven himself to be an elite back in this league, but hasn't played at the level consistently for a couple years due to injuries. The Redskins have no other options, but Portis has 41 more carries for 182 more yards and 4 more TDs to go with his fumbles. Reggie Bush was the 2nd overall pick and got a 5 year, $51 million dollar contract, and he also has 73 catches. However, Sean Payton realized what was going on with Bush's 7 fumbles with under 200 carries and Aaron Stecker was already starting to get more carries. In both situations, Gibbs and Payton were making moves. Then Bush got hurt. Fox is going in reverse. Foster had 30 carries for 53 yards in the two games before the Jax game. What is that, about 1.7 yds a carry? DeAngelo Williams had 21 carries for 101 yds and a 4.8 yds per carry average. Foster had two fumbles, lost one and one TD. Williams had none of those. So who do you start against the Jags? It seems obvious to me. By the way, Foster has three more receptions for only five more yards. For his 237 touches compared to Williams' 119, Foster only has one more TD, 3 to 2.
In other words, Fire Fox! Fire Fox! Everybody now...Fire Fox!
However, let's not get a quitter in the mold of a Nick Saban or a Bobby Petrino. I thought we had it bad, but I actually feel bad for the Falcons.
It's hard to have faith in Foster
when he fumbles so much. Regardless of yards per carry, total yards and TD's if you fumble the ball you should be out of a job.
The Petrino thing just sucks. I can't believe he would do that, bail out after only 12 games. He sucks.
the next game
Well while we complain about Foster, who should be traded with Carr for a 4th or 5th rd pick, I hear the Panthers might start Matt Moore next week. I think we should. Some say that starting Moore is synonymous with giving up on the season. Well call it what you want, but the season is over. Neither Carr nor Testaverde will be with the team next year. Moore should be as the #2. We could groom him to be the next good back-up like maybe a Sage Rosenfels or Charlie Batch, but he'll never accidentally be a Derek Anderson or someone we could build a team around. Jake will be our starter for another three years at least. I'm going to make the assumption that next year, Jake will have different starters to work with.
Here's my predictions:
QB - Jake
RB - Williams
FB - Hoover
WR - Smith
WR - Garrett
TE - King
OL - I don't know, but Gross, Kalil and Wahle will be starting.
DE - McGlover
DE - Peppers
DT - Jenkins
DT - Lewis
OLB - Davis
OLB - Diggs
MLB - Beason
CB - Marshall
CB - Gamble
S - Harris
S - Cooper
One more thing, SF signed Weinke. If he gets some PT and plays better than Carr or Vinny, which I think he will, we'll just ignore it and not talk about it.
I think we need better starters than Lewis, Harris, Cooper, Diggs and Davis on defense to be a top tier defense.
Where's the rookie?
If the Panthers start a rookie next year I bet its at the OT or safety position. When the Panthers go 5-11 it will give them a draft pick soemwhere between 5-9. If the Panthers go with one of the elite tackles that should be available then he could crack the starting lineup at teither LT or RT. If the Panthers then go with a safety in the 2nd round that person could also crack the lineup, again at either safety position.
the rookie is on the bench
The Panthers have a way of not getting rookies on the field unless they are overwhelmingly good, such as Jon Beason. But guys like Jarrett, McGlover, Charles Johnson, Marshall, Williams and Kalil just aren't on the field enough. We see that Jeff King is a solid TE, and he got no play as a rookie. The question is, who do we draft. You mention an offensive tackle. I don't think a rookie tackle will unseat Wharton or Gross, even if we need them to. I think our safeties are good enough that we should use our first pick on an offensive lineman. I say we should get the best one available, unless it's a center. I honestly think Fox is gonna get a bye and still be our coach next year. So since our game plans and play calling suck, we need to acquire more talent. I wonder what we're going to do at LB. Beason is a monster and I think Morgan is getting cut. I think Thomas Davis will never be as good as we hoped, and we never planned on starting Diggs in the first place.

The poll
I suspect the poll results are being influenced by people who have wanted Foster to be benched already.
