Panthers Need to Recognize the Need for Changes

Part of me really wants to say "Hey, we’re 2-2 and it’s not the end of the world. There is plenty of time to turn things around". Maybe so but this team doesn’t give us much hope the ball will now bounce their way. The truth is they have beaten two bad teams and lost pretty handily to two average teams. This last loss to TB wasn’t even close as the early lead knocked the Panthers out of their game plan. As much as Kris Jenkins would have us believe it’s just a matter of playing with spirit and pride I know it goes much deeper than that and there is no easy fix at this point. You can’t expect players that are still learning the playbook to play with a lot of confidence. You can’t get psyched to make a play when you’re worried as to whether you’re following your assignment.

Maybe I’m just making excuses. Maybe the Panthers are just an 8-8 team, period. I have a hard time with that assessment when we have so many skilled and Pro Bowl level players. So, where do changes need to be made?

The first thing the Panthers have to do is admit that changes need to be made on both sides of the ball. Here are some things that come to mind:

• The current offensive game plan doesn’t seem to fit David Carr’s abilities; he is so much more mobile than Delhomme
• We are not using the screen or draw play enough to make the defense pay for the blitzes. We have got to slow those down in passing situations. How about play-action every now and then?
Dwayne Jarrett finally got in the game for a series and he made a catch for a 1st down. Considering how little we get from Keary Colbert & Drew Carter he should get more touches. We need another receiver who, even if he is covered, will go up and get the ball.
• The offensive line has to communicate better in order to pick up the blitzes. Carr wasn't too adept at sensing the rush and rolling away from it. Hmmm, maybe there's another reason for all those sacks he had in Houston?
• The defense cannot continue to rush just four players and expect to stop the short passing game. I thought blitzing Richard Marshall was a good move if only they had started to do it earlier
• Please go back to DeAngelo Williams returning kick-offs if you are not going to give it to Ryne Robinson. Nick Goings just doesn’t provide the possibility of the big return

I’m not pretending I’m some kind of guru. Hardly for sure. It’s always easier to point out the problems than it is to solve them. That’s why the Panthers brass get paid the big bucks, to solve the problems, to make the adjustments, to get the team ready to play and to win ball games. I just call it like I see it. What I see is an under-achieving team that is not playing with confidence. I watched them try to execute a game plan that was hardly creative and looked more of what I see from every other team in the league. If I can see it then it has to be obvious. Is anyone else tired of the short passing game to the sideline?

The Panthers brass better take a long look in the mirror and realize significant changes are needed. Small tweaks will not get it done. On a positive note, at least we're on the road this week!

Agree

I agree completely with all you wrote above.  If ordinary fans such as us can see the obvious changes that need to be made, then why can't the coaches?  And if they can't, why can't the owner?  Maybe the old saying applies here:  "None is so blind as he refuses to see."

As a fan of David Carr, I am very disheartened by his performance on Sunday.  Obviously he did not get much support, so it looks like he is back in the same box as when he was in Houston.  If the QB had been Peyton Manning on Sunday, could he have made much difference?  For one thing, he doesn't play defense and he doesn't catch his own passes.

I had thought at the start of the season the Panthers were capable of being a 12-4 team, looking at their schedule.  After watching their listless, gutless, incompetent play over the last four games, I believe the numbers should be reversed.  The players have no pride.  The coaching on offense and defense is unimaginative, just going through the motions.  They look like a 4-12 team at the best.  Maybe such a disastrous season will lead to wholesale changes in player personnel and coaching staff.

i raise you one

I agree with you AJ, but I'm gonna take it a step further.  I think we need a guy who can really motivate his guys, like Bill Cowher.  We shouldn't hire coordinators who were calling plays on losing teams the year before.  We should re-look how we approach the draft and free agency.  Look at our personnel.  Keyshawn was not an All-Pro player, but he never needed someone to motivate him.  He's certainly better than Carter and Colbert.  We had many chances to sign free agent safeties better than who we have now, such as Ken Hamlin and Donovan Darius.  And we spent a 4th rd draft pick on a KR to watch Goings return kicks.  We could've signed Dante Hall and Donnie Edwards, and then drafted someone else with the 14th pick.  Shoulda, coulda, woulda doesn't help, but I think we get to the playoffs or we get a new coach next year.  This group of underachievers is getting hard to watch.

Playoffs and gasoline jackets

Charlsong, you're much more optimistic than me.  Do you honestly think there is any chance at all of this team making the playoffs? I think they have about much chance, as Muhammed Ali put it, "as a man running though Hell with a gasoline jacket on"!

I agree with the rest of your comment.  It is a wonder how this team has been mismanaged.  A case in point:  Dwayne Jarrett.  If he is so dumb that he can't learn his plays, why not give him a quick review lesson on the bench between plays, mix 'em up, and throw him the ball.  I was very impressed on that long ball he caught from Carr during preseason.  Everybody says the pass was underthrown.  Actually the pass was somewhat overthrown (by the way, precisely where only Jarrett could catch it), and Jarrett went very high to bring it in.  He showed me a lot on that play:  he can go high to bring a ball down, he blocked off the defender to keep him behind, it was not an easy catch, he caught it with his hands with no bobble.  Good hands, strong, fast, can go high -- what more do you want out of a receiver?

optimism
I believe we have more than enough talent to get to the playoffs, but you and I might actually want it more than the guys on the field.  If I'm wrong, no one is proving it.

As for Dwayne Jarrett, well he did everything you want a big target to do except outrun people.  Who did that on big plays?  That's right, Taye Biddle.  Who was barking up a storm and got everyone hyped with a little swagger, not Peppers.

If we're losing and it seems the guys on the field can't get it done, putting in other guys won't hurt.  We should get McGlover and Jarrett on the field, and Robinson on kick returns.

I'm sorry for stating the obvious that we all agree on except the Panthers staff.

WR's Need to block

That's apparently what is keeping Jarrett off the field according to WR coach Williamson. I'll just take one that can catch the ball.

Charlson, I agree I think Fox's job may be in jeapardy if the Panthers remain so flat.
