The Carolina Panthers have claimed rookie tight end Andrew Davie off waivers from the New York Jets, the team announced Thursday.
Davie, 6-foot-4 and 256 pounds, was originally signed as an undrafted rookie free agent from Arkansas by the Jets on May 1. He played in 39 games with 15 starts for the Razorbacks and posted 24 receptions for 199 yards and six touchdowns. An effective blocker, Davie opened holes for running backs Darren McFadden and Felix Jones while at Arkansas. Following high school, he played four seasons of minor league baseball for the St. Louis Cardinals before joining the Razorbacks.

Davie would seem to have good run blocking potential with his size and the production of the backs who ran behind him in college, although if they're trying to cover their bases for a longer-term injury to Rosario (as Darin Gantt suggests), he'd seem to be a strange fit, since he was never much of a pass-catching threat. Still, it will allow them to spread some TE reps in camp if Dante comes back slower than they anticipate.
Panther Paw Prints - Early July Edition
With little news coming forth I have a short addition of Paw Prints for you this week and then a bit of commentary on blogging to follow that I think you will find interesting.
- Lets start with a unknown rookie OT who has at least one fan in the area, Panther LT Jordan Gross:
Rookie OT Patrick Brown picks his spot
"We have the same agent (Ethan Lock) and he told me to take care of him (Brown) because he’s a guy with kind of a similar story to my own," Gross said. "I think he's definitely got potential. His head’s still spinning a little bit – as it is for all the rookies – but I’ve definitely been impressed with what I’ve seen so far."
Let's hope Gross' impressions are correct. Besides, I don't think Geoff Schwartz has the back-up job at tackle nailed down at all.
- I always tell people coming to the Carolinas from the north that the heat and humidity takes some getting used to:
Darin Gantt's Panthers Blog | The Herald - Rock Hill, SC
I knew Juergens might be a short-timer here during OTAs. We spoke one afternoon walking off the practice field, when he was dripping with sweat and I wasn't far behind. Having been raised in Denver and playing his college ball at Wyoming, he wasn't accustomed to the heat and humidity, and couldn't believe Spartanburg was more damp, once I told him where Spartanburg was. "I can't imagine it being much worse than this," he said
So another snowbird melts in the summer heat!

Panthers Rushing Attack Ranked #1 by Foxsports
From FoxSports:Does anyone outside of Charlotte even know what DeAngelo Williams looks like? Maybe not, but someone put this dude on a poster — check his obscene numbers from '08: 1,515 rushing yards (third in NFL), 5.5 yards per carry (first among No. 1 RBs, only the Giants' Derrick Ward was better) and 20 total touchdowns (most in NFL). And John Stewart's not just a cable talk-show host. Carolina's No. 1A RB scored 10 rushing TDs and nearly reached 1,000 yards on his own. The Panthers also really like rookie Mike Goodson after his strong OTAs, plus Brad Hoover gives the run-heavy team solid depth as a blocker, runner and receiver when his number is called.
I usually don't like hype surrounding our team, but the guys have really earned it. No love to our OL, but they are a great asset and will be a humongous reason for our success.
Thoughts?

Panthers waive rookie LBs
The Panthers have waived Mike Juergens and Brit Miller, a pair of UFA rookies. With no other reason to cut them at this stage, one would assume the team is close on negotiations with a couple of rookies for whom roster space is being made. Perhaps Duke Robinson and Corvey Irvin? That would leave just the two second-rounders left.

Is Peppers Return to Panthers His Worst Case Scenario?
With the rumor that the Panthers are working on a long-term deal with DE Julius Peppers I can’t help but wonder why did we have to take such an exhaustive path just to get to the same place we were a year ago? It was this time last year that Peppers rejected a long-term deal from the only team he has known though it wasn’t considered a big deal at the time. I assumed it was simply posturing for a better deal. Based on Peppers subsequent statements after the 2008 season I believed him that it wasn’t about the money, that he really wanted a change of scenery, that he wanted a new defensive coaching staff and that he wants to realize his potential. Now I’m wondering if it really wasn’t all about the money.
For Peppers to change his scenery it was not only going to cost another team a ton of money but also several high draft picks. The jury is back and the verdict is in and Pep has essentially been sentenced to

LS Jason Kyle signs with the Saints
Jason Kyle has signed with the Saints. Jason Kyle played in 128 games for the Carolina Panthers (7th-most in franchise history), and was unable to be resigned due to salary cap issues. He'l be replaced by either second-year UFA J.J. Jansen, (for whom the Panthers will give up a 7th round pick to the Packers if he makes the 53-man roster) or rookie Nick Sundberg of Cal.
